Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A three-volume series of proceedings of the Solomon Lefschetz Centennial Conference, held in 1984 in Mexico City to celebrate Lefschetz's 100th birthday. The conference focused on three main areas of Lefschetz's research: algebraic geometry, algebraic topology, and differential geometry.

Download or read book The Lefschetz Centennial Conference: Proceedings on algebraic geometry written by D. Sundararaman and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 1986 with total page 275 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains many of the papers in the area of algebraic geometry presented at the 1984 Solomon Lefschetz Centennial Conference held in Mexico City. It is the first in a three volume series. The conference focused on this topic along with the areas of algebraic topology and differential equations where Lefschetz made significant contributions. The proceedings begin with two interesting articles: 'A Page of Mathematical Autobiography', that has been reprinted from an early edition of the ""Bulletin of the AMS"", and ""Solomon Lefschetz, A Biography"" by William Hodge, that is reprinted from the ""Bulletin of the London Mathematical Society"".
Book Synopsis Symposium in Honor of C.H. Clemens by : John J Farman
Download or read book Symposium in Honor of C.H. Clemens written by John J Farman and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2002 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume honours Herb Clemens and his contributions to algebraic geometry. The distinguished gathering of mathematicians at the symposium attest to his remarkable career. Papers in the book address topics in which Clemens has been active: the geometry of threefolds, enumerative geometry, Hodge theory, and higher-order methods for attacking deformation problems. The volume should be suitable for graduate students and research mathematicians interested in algebraic geometry.

Book excerpt: The book is a collection of research and review articles in several areas of modern mathematics and mathematical physics published in the span of three decades. The ICM Kyoto talk ?Mathematics as Metaphor? summarises the author's view on mathematics as an outgrowth of natural language.
Book Synopsis Complex Geometry and Lie Theory by : James A. Carlson
Download or read book Complex Geometry and Lie Theory written by James A. Carlson and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 1991 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the late 1960s and early 1970s, Phillip Griffiths and his collaborators undertook a study of period mappings and variation of Hodge structure. The motivating problems, which centered on the understanding of algebraic varieties and the algebraic cycles on them, came from algebraic geometry. However, the techiques used were transcendental in nature, drawing heavily on both Lie theory and hermitian differential geometry. Promising approaches were formulated to fundamental questions in the theory of algebraic curves, moduli theory, and the deep interaction between Hodge theory and algebraic cyles. Rapid progress on many fronts was made in the 1970s and 1980s, including the discovery of important connections to other fields, including Nevanlinna theory, integrable systems, rational homotopy theory, harmonic mappings, intersection cohomology, and superstring theory. This volume contains thirteen papers presented during the Symposium on Complex Geometry and Lie Theory held in Sundance, Utah in May 1989. The symposium was designed to review twenty years of interaction between these two fields, concentrating on their links with Hodge theory. The organizers felt that the time was right to examine once again the large issues of understanding the moduli and cycle theory of higher-dimensional varieties, which was the starting point of these developments. The breadth of this collection of papers indicates the continuing growth and vitality of this area of research. Several survey papers are included, which should make the book a valuable resource for graduate students and other researchers who wish to learn about the field. With contributions from some of the field's top researchers, this volume testifies to the breadth and vitality of this area of research.

Book Synopsis Algebraic Cycles And Related Topics by : Fumio Hazama
Download or read book Algebraic Cycles And Related Topics written by Fumio Hazama and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 1995-01-25 with total page 114 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents the results of Cleverbio, a project funded by the European Commission. The project examined the process of growth and development of clusters in the biotech industry, identifying and studying the main driving forces. The empirical work involved in-depth analysis of five clusters at different stages of development: Cambridge, the most important cluster in Europe; Heidelberg, one of the strongest in Germany; Aarhus in Denmark; Marseille in France; and Milano in Italy at an early stage of development. Other clusters were also analysed, such as Paris-Evry (France), Uppsala (Sweden), Biovalley (Switzerland), Bay Area and San Diego (US).The ultimate aim of Cleverbio has been to build a normative model that incorporates:• the preconditions for a cluster to grow (scientific base and/or industrial base, innovative financing, etc.);• the driving forces for cluster growth and development, i.e. the key factors of development (new company creation, IP rules, acceptance of biotech products, services and infrastructures, etc.);• best practices in cluster management (barrier removal, network creation, marketing, technology transfer, etc.).The book also identifies different forms of cluster creation. In some cases clusters were born and grew spontaneously as a consequence of the original co-presence of the key success factors (spontaneous clusters); in other cases they were born of the actions of public actors (industry restructuring and industry development policies). Finally, in a few cases, the process of clustering started as a result of a combination of different original conditions (hybrid clusters)./a
