Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is about me and my childrens journey. We started off leaving Menorca, our friends, and our home. My husband had abandoned us, which was a blessing in disguise. We arrived in the United Kingdom with nothing, having to sleep outside Gatwick Airport on the street. All my plans had fallen through, and we became homeless, walking the streets with little food, in search for a home. We travelled from one office to another, from one city to another, on trains and buses. Strangers helped us when we were on the brink of despair and depression. I could not control anything that was happening, and that is one reason I am writing this book. Many people on my travels have helped me; they also were very concerned and asked me, What are you going to do? What is going to happen to you all? Now in my book I will explain my journey, although it is not over yet, but now it is a bit easier.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bernadette was just ten years old when her father packed her off to a convent school in Dublin. Seven gruelling years later, she returned home to Liverpool at the start of the swinging sixties. Bernadette had dreamed of being a teacher ever since she was a little girl so she promptly began a course at teacher training college, determined to give children the sort of education she wished she'd had. Bernadette got her first job at 21, teaching five to seven year olds in a school in one of Liverpool's toughest slum areas. The poverty and deprivation she saw at the school shocked her to the core. Children would frequently turn up shoeless and starving, but gradually Bernadette could see she was making a real difference to their lives, and found that teaching changed her own life in ways she hadn't expected... Rich in period detail, PLEASE, MISS is an uplifting and moving book that opens a window onto the colourful and fascinating world of 1960s Liverpool.

Book excerpt: Music, music, music. Right from the start of his package holiday to Menorca, music plagues and obsesses the author. But lets face it, as Iona, his long-suffering wife can testify, hes a pretty intolerant sort of a person. Seen through his eyes, this book provides a sideways look at Menorca, a sort of rough guide to the island, (but not nearly as rough as his next door neighbours in his holiday apartment). Informative, but at the same time witty and amusing, A Meander in Menorca is an idiosyncratic commentary on this little island from its earliest inhabitants, the ancient Talayotic culture, to the present-day tourists, some of whom have no culture at all.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: David Gandelman has helped thousands of students look within to find their own answers to life’s big questions: Who am I? What am I here to do? How can I find happiness? Over the course of this journey, he began to notice that the overwhelming number of powerful life questions and conundrums his students encountered fell into seven categories, which he eventually realized were actually seven potent energies that existed within each individual soul. When any one or more of these energies is out of balance, our lives can become chaotic and unfulfilled. Now, in The Seven Energies of the Soul, Gandelman offers a detailed guide to each of these critical energies, as well as exercises and meditation practices that can help you evaluate your energetic strengths and weaknesses, and work toward spiritual and energetic balance. Spiritual masters throughout millennia have always taught that the answers to life’s most tangled questions lie within. In the pages of The Seven Energies of the Soul, that ancient path lies clearly before you. Read this book, and take your first step toward authentic, transformative awareness.

Book excerpt: Becoming a parent need to not put an end to wanderlust. That’s the message in this new anthology from Bradt, the latest in a series of collections of real-life tales focusing on different aspects of travel. With contributions from a range of both well-known, professional travel writers and newer writers from the UK and North America, this engaging and entertaining compilation of 37 stories lifts the lid on the perils and joys of travelling with babies, toddlers and teenagers in locations spanning five continents. Contributors include renowned travel writer Dervla Murphy, National Geographic Traveller Editorial Director Maria Pieri, multi-award winning authors Adrian Phillips and Mike Unwin, and nature writers Amy-Jane Beer and Nicola Chester to name just a few. Potentially life-threatening situations, confessions of inept parenting and celebrations of derring-do are all part of the mix. There’s plenty of adventurous travel, from trekking with toddlers in the Himalayas to sailing en famille across the Atlantic Ocean and the first circumnavigation of Mauritius by bicycle. Read how one mother threatens to dump her baby on jobsworth airport officials, how a father inadvertently takes his daughters to a brothel, and how one family turned up six hours early for a flight. and still managed to miss it. Join families paddling with crocodiles and getting their jeep stuck on a beach as the tide is coming in, or eleven-month-old Rory as he eats alongside marine iguanas and three-year-old Quin who befriends a family of cockroaches. At times comical, hair-raising or just plain fun, there are also magical moments with wild creatures or in wild places. For anyone who has ever travelled with children, or wondered what it must be like to head out into the unknown with little ones in tow, this is a captivating read.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Eric Hobsbawm's works have had a nearly incalculable effect across generations of readers and students, influencing more than the practice of history but also the perception of it. Born in Alexandria, Egypt, of second-generation British parents, Hobsbawm was orphaned at age fourteen in 1931. Living with an uncle in Berlin, he experienced the full force of world economic depression, and in the charged reaction to it in Germany was forced to choose between Nazism and Communism, which was no choice at all. Hobsbawm's lifelong allegiance to Communism inspired his pioneering work in social history, particularly the trilogy for which he is most famous--The Age of Revolution, The Age of Capital, and The Age of Empire--covering what he termed "the long nineteenth century" in Europe. Selling in the millions of copies, these held sway among generations of readers, some of whom went on to have prominent careers in politics and business. In this comprehensive biography of Hobsbawm, acclaimed historian Richard Evans (author of The Third Reich Trilogy, among other works) offers both a living portrait and vital insight into one of the most influential intellectual figures of the twentieth century. Using exclusive and unrestricted access to the unpublished material, Evans places Hobsbawm's writings within their historical and political context. Hobsbawm's Marxism made him a controversial figure but also, uniquely and universally, someone who commanded respect even among those who did not share-or who even outright rejected-his political beliefs. Eric Hobsbawm: A Life in History gives us one of the 20th century's most colorful and intellectually compelling figures. It is an intellectual life of the century itself.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "A sublime collection of traditional Spanish and Tapas recipes. Boqueria captures the soul of Spanish cuisine." --James Beard Award-winning chef and cookbook author Alfred Portale For over a decade New York City's famed Boqueria restaurants have been distilling the energy, atmosphere, and flavors of Barcelona, becoming a place where patrons share excellent wine and exquisite dishes. From traditional tapas like crispy patatas bravas and bacon-wrapped dates to classic favorites like garlicky sautéed shrimp, pork meatballs, and saffron-spiced seafood paella, Boqueria captures the very best of Spanish cuisine. For this sumptuous cookbook, restaurateur Yann de Rochefort and Executive Chef Marc Vidal tell the story of Boqueria, which has now spread to four New York City locations as well as to Washington, D.C. While the recipes-all deeply rooted in Barcelona's culinary culture-take center stage with phenomenal food photography, Boqueria also swings open the kitchen doors to reveal the bustling life of the restaurant, and offers exciting glimpses of the locales that inspire it: the bars, markets, and cervezerias of Barcelona. Transporting us to the busy, colorful stalls of legendary fresh market "La Boqueria," these portraits of the Spanish city are so vibrant that you can almost smell the Mediterranean's salt air. Boqueria's recipes are delectable variations on authentic Barcelona fare, but more than that; along with their origin stories, these recipes inspire a bit of the Boqueria experience-the cooking, the conversations, and the connections-in your own home.
