Book excerpt: Marc Quinn has always been interested in the public's obsession with the body, its perfections and flaws, and how this obsession has led some people to alter their bodies in increasingly extreme ways. This exhibition brought together new sculptures executed in marble, bronze and silver, depicting people who have undergone extreme levels of plastic surgery and transformation, including hormone therapy, tattoos, piercing, skin bleaching, and hair dying, as well as implants and transplants. The people depicted included cartoon characters, minor porn stars and celebrities. -- OCLC.

This book was released on 2004 with total page 464 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Stedelijk Museum opened its doors in 1895, the same year as the first Venice Biennale. It was a "quiet, civilized museum for the Amsterdam bourgeoisie in a time when there was nothing as troublesome as modern art." Initially, the museum exhibited the legacy of the eccentric Sophia Augusta de Bruyn, Douairire Lopez Suasso: a heterogeneous collection of antiques, coins, jewels, timepieces, silver knickknacks, and other curiosa. Period rooms, from canal houses that had been demolished when Raadhuisstraat was driven through, helped create a presentable whole. The museum's renowned furniture collection was not begun until 1934, but since then it has grown to include more than 1000 objects from circa 1850 to the present, with an accent on the twentieth century. Chairs, settees, tables, folding screens, cabinets, and even complete interiors are included. This publication provides a comprehensive overview of the Stedelijk Museum's furniture collecting activities from 1934 to 2000. It charts the museum's rich collection, which includes work by H.P. Berlage, K.P.C de Bazel, Piet Kramer, Gerrit T. Rietveld, Martin Visser, Piet Hein Eek and Marcel Wanders, as well as international furniture classics designed by Michael Thonet, Charlotte Perriand, Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, Marcel Breuer, Joe Colombo, Arne Jacobsen, Ettore Sottsass, Philippe Starck and Ron Arad. Besides a complete overview of the furniture collection, this annotated catalogue includes an introduction to the history of the collection and its exhibition activities. In addition, the volume explores various themes, such as international and Dutch icons, and contrasts and evolutions, in greater depth in a number of short essays.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is dedicated to the memory of Professor Azizur Rahman Chowdhury. The book discusses some notable debates in the arena of international trade law and globalisation. It looks at the basic structure of the WTO, its function, and decision-making, and explores key economic and legal concepts underpinning the WTO, including Most-Favoured Nation Treatment and National Treatment. The need of the hour is to discuss tariff barriers and non-tariff barriers, as they assist in promoting economic development. Besides these, the WTO attempts to control illegal trade practices, including dumping and subsidies, which are also pertinent topics in the current climate. The book examines many of these issues through exploring the jurisprudence and regulatory framework of WTO. It examines the existing WTO jurisprudence to reconcile trade liberalisation with other societal values and interests. Furthermore, it highlights the regulation of international trade in agricultural products. Overall, this book shows that international trade law of the WTO is not a self-contained discipline, but has clear connections with other social, economic, and environmental subjects. The WTO interacts with these issues, and thus the book discusses, clarifies and identifies its relationship with human rights, intellectual property rights and the environment. It discusses the following topics in single chapters; Trade, Globalisation and Economic Policy; WTO and Environment; WTO and Human Rights; WTO and Regulation of International Trade in Agricultural Products; WTO and Developing Countries. The book provides a unique, interdisciplinary, and refreshing approach to the study of international trade law and the WTO.

Book excerpt: Since the 1960s, American artist Lee Bontecou has been internationally praised for her intriguing sculptures and installations. The rich, organic shapes of her sculptures seem to originate from a mysterious universe in which man's fears and desires are condensed. Recently the artist created Sandbox, a new installation in which she combines elements from her work from the 1960s to the present. A picture essay by Joan Banach, artist and friend of Bontecou, focuses on the genesis of Sandbox and maps the rich network of Bontecou's inspirations: pictures range from extracts from geological and historical books to images of works by old masters. The beautiful, detailed photographs were taken at the artist's studio. This publication also shows Bontecou's sketchbooks and the inspirational ?wall of drawings? in her studio. It is an intimate insight into the creative process of the artist. Published on the occasion of the exhibition at Gemeentemuseum Den Haag, The Hague, Netherlands, 25 February - 2 July 2017.

Book excerpt: "A new, detailed monograph about Wim Crouwel, graphic designer and exhibition designer who defined the look of post war Holland with his studio Total Design. His modernism was reflected in countless posters and catalogues for the Stedelijk Museum, in stamps and experimental work like a sensational computer alphabet. In the seventies Crouwel evoked a lot of criticism but nowadays he is seen as a cult figure and an inspiration for many. The book is richly illustrated and shows us very much of his fine works. The text focuses on his career and views, gives informative backgrounds on his work, and places it in the right context"--Publisher's website.

Book excerpt: This book is an elaborate study of the interrelationships between film historical discourse and archival practices, such as the collecting, restoration and exhibition of films. It delineates how film historiographical discourses always leave traces in the film archive, and vice versa. The book investigates and analyzes the history of three important collections from the archive of EYE Film Museum: the Uitkijk-collection, the Desmet-collection, and Dutch silent films. The histories of these collections have different connections to film historiography, and as such allow us to investigate these interrelationships from various perspectives. It shows how archival films and collections always carry the historical traces of selection policies, restoration philosophies, and exhibition strategies. As such the book aims to demonstrate how film archives cannot be innocent or neutral sources of film history. In addition, it shows that current EYE Film Museum activities semi-automatically refer to this history of which the archive carries the material traces.

Book excerpt: A cross-disciplinary appraisal on the role of migration embodied in works of art and material culture Artistic production and the preservation of cultural property have always been subject to the ebb and flow of international influences. Major factors have included the supply of materials, the migration of artists, designers and craftspeople, as well as evolving conservation theory and practice within the spheres of the fine and applied arts. The cross-disciplinary papers in this volume, presented at a conference in Cambridge, reflect on the role of migration embodied in works of art and material culture as documented in visual and written sources.
