Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Odyssey, Vol. 1 of 2: With an English Translation by A. T. Murray The name "Homer" brings before the mind a definite picture of the blind minstrel, roaming from city to city and singing or chanting portions of the great poems that are traditionally ascribed to him. Such a type is splendidly represented by the bust of Homer in the Naples Museum, and almost all that tradition tells of the poet, save in so far as it is made up of statements regarding his date - which in turn rest upon combinations often demonstrably false - groups itself about such a typical figure, and is plainly without historic worth. The ancient "lives" of Homer which have come down to us are all later than the beginning of the Christian era, and from them we can gather little that has any claim to attention except the two statements that Homer was an Ionian - Chios and Smyrna being the cities most uniformly given as his birthplace; and that in Chios there was a guild or clan of Homeridae - that is, "sons of Homer." The first mention of the Chian Homeridae occurs in the geographer Strabo (about 18 A.D.). About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Odyssey, Vol. 1: With Introduction, Notes, and Table of Homeric Forms Calypso, the Island Queen, is warned by heaven to release her prisoner, and sends him away in a boat of his own fashioning. But the wrath of Poseidon follows him on the sea, and wrecks his frail craft on the shore of Scheria, the happy land of the Phaeacians. But he is rescued by the fair princess Nausicaa, who brings him to the palace of her father, King Alcinous, where he is royally entertained. At the bidding of the King he tells the strange story of his wanderings from the time he left Troy till he was thrown upon the coast of Ogygia, where Calypso lived. He had landed in the country of the Ciconians, and left there many of his comrades dead: he had seen the homes of the Lotus-eaters, and could scarcely tear his men away from the dreamy charm of the land. He had faced the cannibal Cyclops in his mountain-den, and revenged himself on the monster by blinding his solitary eye, after escaping from his clutches by a grotesque stratagem. Next we hear of him at the floating isle of Aeolus, and see him blown back from the very shores of his own country through the treachery of his sailors, who Opened the Bag of Winds that Aeolus had given him. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the spirit of Ludolph of Saxony (c. 1295-1378) and Ignatius of Loyola (1491-1556), The Fourfold Gospel invites the reader into the mystery of God's redemption in Jesus Christ. All the parallel passages in the Gospels are glossed together, along with the unique material, using a medieval interpretive approach called the Quadriga or the acronym PaRDeS in Hebrew. Meditating on the literal, canonical, moral, and theological senses of Scripture offers a scaffolding for the spiritual formation of the reader. This volume, in addition to a thorough introduction to the method and the Gospels, focuses on the beginning of the story--the birth, baptism, and temptations of Christ.
