Book excerpt: When Stephanie Staal first read The Feminine Mystique in college, she found it "a mildly interesting relic from another era." But more than a decade later, as a married stay-at-home mom in the suburbs, Staal rediscovered Betty Friedan's classic work -- and was surprised how much she identified with the laments and misgivings of 1950s housewives. She set out on a quest: to reenroll at Barnard and re-read the great books she had first encountered as an undergrad. From the banishment of Eve to Judith Butler's Gender Trouble, Staal explores the significance of each of these classic tales by and of women, highlighting the relevance these ideas still have today. This process leads Staal to find the self she thought she had lost -- curious and ambitious, zany and critical -- and inspires new understandings of her relationships with her husband, her mother, and her daughter.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Women of the Cell and Cloister It is a little difficult for us in the present age to realize the terrifying adventures which the desert presented to the imagination of the early solitaries. Bodily hardship did not daunt them, nor even the peril of wild beasts but it required a Sublime courage to go forth into a region inhabited by strange monsters and haunted by powerful demons. The light of the desert exaggerated proportions, distorted appearances harmless bushes and animals assumed malignant shapes excited imagination peopled the unexplored vasts with horrors. But granting the high spirit and noble purpose of the Christian solitaries, we may pause to ask What had the extreme penances the hermits practised, the rules by which they guided their lives, their fierce combats with fiends, to do with the teaching of Christ and his apostles It was the social and not the solitary virtues that Christ preached extremes of asceticism have no recognized place in the Gospel. And she would smile again as she had smiled when she had first opened the white kid box. But it was true that there was a certain short stretch of hours in which a diamond bracelet failed a man. These were the hours that immediately followed the dying down of the first ecstasy. During those hours the bracelet be came something that had been wonderful and would be wonderful again, but right now you couldn't ride in it, you couldn't listen to it, or you couldn't learn to fly it. The bracelet is certain] gorgeous, darling, but what shall we do this evening? What plans did you make? After all, it is my birthday. Are we just going to sit here and look at each other? Book excerpt: How women-only communities provide spaces for new forms of culture, sociality, gender, and sexuality Women’s lands are intentional, collective communities composed entirely of women. Rooted in 1970s feminist politics, they continue to thrive in a range of ways, from urban households to isolated rural communes, providing spaces where ideas about gender, sexuality, and sociality are challenged in both deliberate and accidental ways. Herlands, a compelling ethnography of women’s land networks in the United States, highlights the ongoing relevance of these communities as vibrant cultural enclaves that also have an impact on broader ideas about gender, women’s bodies, lesbian identity, and right ways of living. As a participant-observer, Keridwen N. Luis brings unique insights to the lives and stories of the women living in these communities. While documenting the experiences of specific spaces in Massachusetts, Tennessee, New Mexico, and Ohio, Herlands also explores the history of women’s lands and breaks new ground exploring culture theory, gender theory, and how lesbian identity is conceived and constructed in North America. Luis also discusses how issues of race and class are addressed, the ways in which nudity and public hygiene challenge dominant constructions of the healthy or aging body, and the pervasive influence of hegemonic thinking on debates about transgender women. Luis finds that although changing dominant thinking can be difficult and incremental, women’s lands provide exciting possibilities for revolutionary transformation in society.
