Book excerpt: in Ukrainian fields and forests in the 1940s and 1950s, but what makes any successful popular insurgency work, whether it takes place in America in 1776 or in troubled parts of the world today. History aside, Roman Mac's story is also a moving human document. There is tragedy, heartbreak and heroic endurance here, both witnessed and lived. And Roman depicts it all in modest, straightforward style not only the great struggle that was going on around him, but also the struggle that was going on within himself. We see and feel the rustic joys and travails of village life, the destruction and loss that war, Nazism and Communism bring upon it, and we, too, struggle along the "winding path to freedom" with a young boy who manages to keep his faith, his humanity and not the least of accomplishments amidst so much suffering and sorrow his sense of humor through it all. Although I was already familiar with Ukrainian history and, as an aide to Presidents Nixon, Ford and Reagan, was 2 ROMAN D. MAC an eye witness to the last chapters of the Cold War, reading Roman Mac's story made me understand more fully what that colossal struggle was really like for the ordinary people who bore the brunt of it. His gift of making us see it all as he saw it then, through a young boy's eyes, brings alive both the brutality of battle and magic, solitary moments in the still forest with only woodland creatures as companions. We feel the pelting snow and piercing cold, we smell the smoke of the campfires, and we hear both the whiz of bullets and the deep, moving chords of the freedom fighters'songs, just as the young Roman Mac did more than half a century ago. Then, with the battle over, we follow a troubled but determined young man on the road to a new life in the west. We share the ups and downs of a new series of trials and tests from which he emerges once again with his humanity and his humor intact. By book's end, we feel as if we've walked beside him all the way, and we, too, experience his joy in achieving success, dignity and a happy family life in America. Thank you, Roman Mac, for sharing and showing us so much, and for doing it with such clarity, honesty and goodness of heart.

Book excerpt: Best-selling author shares his inspirational journey Today known as the author of the mega-seller The Bondage Breaker and the founder of Freedom in Christ ministries, Neil Anderson didn't always know that he was called to serve the Lord as a Christian minister. Though he is sure of his calling now, he readily admits that he has never sought a position in ministry and though he has founded and led a successful international parachurch organization, he refuses to spend a minute of his time to keep it in business. The son and grandson of Norwegian farmers, Anderson grew up in rural Minnesota. He was a fun-loving, sports-crazy child, and no one suspected that God had planted a seed in him that would lead first to years as a pastor, then to teach in seminary, write or coauthor sixty books, and found a global ministry. Here he honestly shares his journey, complete with struggles and trials as he learns to be guided by the Holy Spirit. Though he still asks God, "Why me?" he continues to set people on the path to true freedom in Christ.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Book Praise & Reviews "As a how-to guide, this book contains everything you may need to know to turn your passions into profits." Bill Bartmann (Billionaire entrepreneur, author, speaker, educator) Read & Give Program A portion of the sale of this book is donated to charity. Book Description Are you unhappy in your job? Are you tired of living paycheck to paycheck and feel like you just don't have enough money, skills, or education to turn your life around? Even if you're not sure you know what it is you like to do, you can change your life and get rich doing it, says entrepreneur Duane Harden in his wise and entertaining new book, 5 Easy Steps to Financial Freedom: Do What You Love & Get Rich Doing It. Turning your passion into a profitable business is easy, fast, and fun, says Harden, and you can become rich in just five easy steps. First, start by saying yes to financial freedom. Attitude is everything and as the Law of Attraction states, what you put out into the universe is often what you attract. If you imagine yourself financially secure and happy, you will be. Imagining a new life for yourself is the inspiration you need to go out and do the concrete things to turn your dreams into a reality. Conversationally written and filled with humorous drawings, helpful worksheets, and key tips, 5 Easy Steps to Financial Freedom also offers a 90-day action plan that includes blueprints for success that Harden himself used to build his wealth. His own journey included the purchase of numerous real-estate properties, opening a restaurant, starting a music company, and much more. Harden gives you "Life Assignments" that get you thinking and acting differently. Beware of what he calls the "crabs in a pot" mentality, where everyone is trying to pull everyone else down in order to struggle to the top. Instead, he advises, think positively. Stay away from the naysayers and feed your dream. Soon you will realize that your inner life is reflected in your outer life. Harden helps you to discover the real you, what you want, and how much money you want to be there for you now and in the future. He explains how the real difference between rich people and poor people is fear and an unwillingness to keep an open mind to new opportunities. Rich people are not afraid to take risks, and well-planned risks almost always pay off. Success, he reminds you, is your birthright and it's your job to claim it. Review your credit and your financial house. Clean up the clutter in your life, whether it is the wrong way of thinking or a messy desk. Discover what really makes you tick because when you love what you do it's never really work, and when passion is present the money will miraculously follow. Keep daily positive reminders taped where you can see them, or even have a vision board filled with photographs of where you want to be in life. Write your resignation letter to your boss, but don't send it yet. Just the act of writing it puts you in the right frame of mind for moving on to something much better. "You are what you think and will become what you dream," says Harden. You'll learn to be a PIG (passive income generator) Farmer, which requires little work but makes you tons of money. 5 Easy Steps to Financial Freedom shows you how go from rags to riches and is understandable and easy to read. This invaluable guide will change your life!

Book excerpt: Historical fiction based on the true story and work on the underground railroad by Levi and Catherine Coffin and other abolitionists, including free blacks. Story of a thirteen-year-old boy's challenge of understanding the horrors of slavery, how to see and relate to African Americans as real people, and make his own decisions about breaking the law and facing the dangers of working on the underground railroad. Blurb: After his parents died, Luke's aunt and uncle gave him a home. He was pretty sure his uncle didn't liked him much, though. Luke thought about running away, maybe finding work on one of the boats or barges that tied up at the port of Cincinnati, his hometown and the biggest city in the West. When Levi Coffin, a storeowner in an Indiana village, asked Luke to work for him over the summer, Luke jumped at the chance to live and work with this Quaker family, who treated him with such kindness and respect. But while the Coffins lived in a quiet town, far from civilization, their home was known as the "Grand Central Station" of the Underground Railroad. Luke had to decide whether to obey his uncle, who told him to have nothing to do with breaking the law, or join in the dangerous ¿ and most important ¿ work of his time.A sequel, A Winding Road to Freedom, follows the story of a character from this book, Cassie, who returns south to where she was a slave to rescue her baby son.

Book excerpt: Never before had Daniel Bergner seen a spectacle as bizarre as the one he had come to watch that Sunday in October. Murderers, rapists, and armed robbers were competing in the annual rodeo at Angola, the grim maximum-security penitentiary in Louisiana. The convicts, sentenced to life without parole, were thrown, trampled, and gored by bucking bulls and broncos before thousands of cheering spectators. But amid the brutality of this gladiatorial spectacle Bergner caught surprising glimpses of exaltation, hints of triumphant skill. The incongruity of seeing hope where one would expect only hopelessness, self-control in men who were there because they'd had none, sparked an urgent quest in him. Having gained unlimited and unmonitored access, Bergner spent an unflinching year inside the harsh world of Angola. He forged relationships with seven prisoners who left an indelible impression on him. There's Johnny Brooks, seemingly a latter-day Stepin Fetchit, who, while washing the warden's car, longs to be a cowboy and to marry a woman he meets on the rodeo grounds. Then there's Danny Fabre, locked up for viciously beating a woman to death, now struggling to bring his reading skills up to a sixth-grade level. And Terry Hawkins, haunted nightly by the ghost of his victim, a ghost he tries in vain to exorcise in a prison church that echoes with the cries of convicts talking in tongues. Looming front and center is Warden Burl Cain, the larger-than-life ruler of Angola who quotes both Jesus and Attila the Hun, declares himself a prophet, and declaims that redemption is possible for even the most depraved criminal. Cain welcomes Bergner in, and so begins a journey that takes the author deep into a forgotten world and forces him to question his most closely held beliefs. The climax of his story is as unexpected as it is wrenching. Rendered in luminous prose, God of the Rodeo is an exploration of the human spirit, yielding in the process a searing portrait of a place that will be impossible to forget and a group of men, guilty of unimaginable crimes, desperately seeking a moment of grace.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As Eve Ensler says in her inspired foreword to this book, "Jody Williams is many things—a simple girl from Vermont, a sister of a disabled brother, a loving wife, an intense character full of fury and mischief, a great strategist, an excellent organizer, a brave and relentless advocate, and a Nobel Peace Prize winner. But to me Jody Williams is, first and foremost, an activist." From her modest beginnings to becoming the tenth woman—and third American woman—to receive the Nobel Peace Prize, Jody Williams takes the reader through the ups and downs of her tumultuous and remarkable life. In a voice that is at once candid, straightforward, and intimate, Williams describes her Catholic roots, her first step on a long road to standing up to bullies with the defense of her deaf brother Stephen, her transformation from good girl to college hippie at the University of Vermont, and her protest of the war in Vietnam. She relates how, in 1981, she began her lifelong dedication to global activism as she battled to stop the U.S.-backed war in El Salvador. Throughout the memoir, Williams underlines her belief that an "average woman"—through perseverance, courage and imagination—can make something extraordinary happen. She tells how, when asked if she’d start a campaign to ban and clear anti-personnel mines, she took up the challenge, and the International Campaign to Ban Landmines (ICBL) was born. Her engrossing account of the genesis and evolution of the campaign, culminating in 1997 with the Nobel Peace Prize, vividly demonstrates how one woman’s commitment to freedom, self-determination, and human rights can have a profound impact on people all over the globe.
