Solid state materials such as phosphors, glasses and crystals are examples of such and have been used in commercial instruments and various one-of-a- kind research and development applications. This area has been the subject of previous ISA papers. It is generally the case that fluorescence decay time or lifetime is the parameter that is measured in order to determine temperature for applications that do not require imaging. There are several good reasons for this. The decay time is a very sensitive function of temperature. Time- and rate-dependent methods are independent of amplitude fluctuations and are therefore not as susceptible to optical noise. In some applications, however, other aspects of the temperature-dependent fluorescence can also be useful. What follows is a description that concerns intensity-based methods and the types of applications to which they apply. The emphasis of the present work is the advantage for situations demanding a wide range and rapidly varying temperatures.

Book excerpt: Abstract: Temperature is not only a fundamental aspect of everyday life, but it is also an essential metric for thermal conversion systems concerning efficiency, emissions, and component lifetime estimation. Therefore, a vast range of different methods to measure temperature has been developed. The technique of focus in this thesis is lifetime-based surface phosphor thermometry. In phosphor thermometry, one leverages the changes in luminescence of materials called phosphors to measure temperature. The spectral changes can result from shifts in the relative intensity of emission lines in the spectra or shifts in emission line wavelength with temperature. In addition, changes in the lifetime of the phosphorescence signal with temperature can be utilized for thermometry. Inorganic phosphors are ceramic substances that can operate with a range of luminescence activators. Most often, the luminescence originates from trivalent lanthanide ions or transition metal ions doped in a host crystal. Surface phosphor thermometry has the benefit of being a remote sensing technique, where one coats a phosphor on a surface of interest. This phosphor coating is then excited with a remote source, for example, pulsed laser light, and the phosphor luminescence is detected remotely. In this thesis, technology developments, error sources analysis, and applications of phosphor thermometry are presented. The technology developments present a high-temperature calibration system and a method for analyzing the lifetime components in the luminescence decay of phosphors in detail. An analysis of upconversion phosphors for temperature measurements beneath thermal barrier coatings and an investigation of high-temperature phosphors to 1900 K and their sensitivities to the oxygen content of the gas environment are also included in this work. The investigations into potential error sources include how PMT nonlinearity effects can influence the measured lifetime with excitation frequency from 10 Hz up to 10 kHz. In addition, the phosphor luminescence decay time impact of high repetition excitation was also investigated and analyzed to see potential error sources for temperature measurements. Phosphor thermometry was also used in two applications, including measuring the surface temperature of burning wood pellets and the surface temperature of a combustion nozzle in a down-scaled gas turbine combustor using hydrogen-enriched methane as fuel

Book excerpt: Since the last International Temperature Symposium, phosphor thermometry has continued to mature with considerable attention given to combustion and turbine engine applications. More recently the utility to problems on the micro- and nano-scales has appreciated, particularly in regard to biological and biomedical situations. The method is therefore used for a wide range of situations. Signal interpretation is important and experience teaches that without sufficient care phosphor signals can be misleading. In order to advance the method, signal analysis investigations should prove fruitful. The specific aspect addressed here is the question of waveform sampling. A simple phenomenological approach is described that explores how the number of points digitized per waveform affects the measurement repeatability and accuracy. This is demonstrated for single shot signals and the average of 512 sequential waveforms. A bright temperature-independent luminescence signal from YVO4:Eu is sampled every 800 ps for a highly sampled condition and every 8 microseconds for a low sampled condition. When the average of 512 waveforms are compared for the two sampling conditions, they differ by only 0.4%. For the highly sampled case, a noisy single shot waveform compared to the averaged waveform differed by 1.8%. Future efforts on this subject will address intermediate and lower sampling rates. Also, variable window techniques should be explored that are especially important for non-log-linear signals. Investigations, such as this, give the developer the requisite information for designing analysis systems appropriate for the intended application in terms of precision, accuracy, and response time.

Book excerpt: Phosphor thermometry offers many advantages over other temperature sensing techniques and is firmly established as a superior technique when compared to others such as infrared and resistive heating methods. The aim of the present work is to extend the application range of phosphor thermometry by exploring the feasibility of two new areas. In the first assessment, the temperature of tissue was evaluated by directly and indirectly interfacing thermographic phosphors with tissue. In the indirect method the temperature evaluated was the result of joule heating that occurred in a current carrying electrode mimicking an implant. The current was supplied by a DC supply. Results indicate that the signal transferred across the tissue boundary is in fact intense enough and clearly detectable to accurately infer temperature values from the decay curves associate with thermographic phosphors. The decay time was measured up to the thickness of 22.55 mm. . In the second part of the work the decay behavior of YAG:Dy coated on flexible ceramic strips of Yttrium Stabilized Zirconia (YSZ) was thoroughly investigated and characterized from ambient to 1200 °C. This was accomplished by 365 nm UV LED excitation and monitoring the 4I15/2 ®6H15/2 transition at 456 nm. The decay characteristics did not show a strong temperature dependence up to 9̃00°C. However, at temperatures exceeding 900°C there was a strong temperature dependence, such that the decay time decreased as a function of temperature. Many different types of thermographic powders exist. In most cases work has been performed on these materials while in a fine powder form. There are significant challenges when working with fine powders (nm- & micro;m particle size) and these challenges have limited the range of characterizations and potential applications of these materials. Among the different types of thermographic phosphors La2O2Su:Eu is one of the most sensitive types that is currently available. Lanthanum oxysulfide doped with Eu has been reported to have a sensitivity of 0.01 & deg;C with a wide temperature range of response-cryogenics to 1500 & deg;C. In this work two types of La2O2S:Eu (0.1 % and 1.0% Eu concentration) have been fully characterized at cryogenic temperatures and at elevated temperatures while embedded in an elastomeric sleeve. The flexible optically transparent elastomer Sylgard 184 was chosen as the encapsulant for this study. Samples with increasing levels of La2O2S:Eu powder (from 1 wt % to 25 wt%) were prepared and studied. Both single layer (single concentration) and multilayer (concentration gradient) sample types were prepared using spin-coating techniques and fully characterized. The effect of the La2O2Su:Eu particles on the thermal, mechanical, and luminescence behavior of the composite materials was fully investigated and reported here. While the percentage of the Eu (0.1 versus 1.0%) did not have a detectable effect on the emission characteristics of the composites, it did indeed affect the thermal and mechanical properties of the composites. SEM investigation suggests that the differences in the granular structure of the two powders has influenced the properties of the composite polymers prepared in this study. Furthermore, the emission behavior of the La2O2Su:Eu+Sylgard184 composites showed a strong non-linear temperature dependence in the range of -40 & deg;C to 75 & deg;C and little dependence on the powder concentration level.

Book excerpt: Detecting structural damage in a material before complete failure has been a challenge with respect to material access, sensing mechanism resolution, and environmental setting, among other factors. In this work, the feasibility of using thermographic phosphors as a non-contact, instantaneous, and customizable sensing mechanism for detection of structural damage was investigated. The two materials were (1) Sylgard 184 elastomer and (2) silica aerogels. Both materials were impregnated with thermographic phosphors using different methods and tested over a wide range of temperatures. The degree of fracture in either material was gradually increased to represent a complete material failure scenario and a gradual propagation of defect that has not yet led to ultimate failure. The aerogel synthesis methodology was optimized for phosphor application so that either a discrete layer of phosphor would be embedded or a homogeneous mix was created and phoshpor was distributed uniformly throughout the material. The discreteness of the phosphor layer was identified by two distinct points representing the entrance and exit points of the excitation and emission beams. The composite materials (homogeneous and otherwise) were fully characterized, and the sensitivity of the remote, non-contact sensing was evaluated. It was determined that fracture and failure in both aerogel and PDMS could be detected by phosphor thermometry and the limit of its resolution was ultimately determined by the thermal properties of the material, the choice of phosphors, and ambient temperature. In conclusion, thermogrpahic phosphor powders were successfully incorporated at discrete levels and superficially in aerogels and in PDMS materials and as a result can be used as means to interrogate the bulk of the material. Phosphor thermometry proved to be a viable option for remotely identifying structural defects in these two materials, with limitations. The changes in the thermal profile of the materials as a result of material defects were used to infer information about the structural health of the matierla.

Book excerpt: Manufacturing process controls include all systems and software that exert control over production processes. Control systems include process sensors, data processing equipment, actuators, networks to connect equipment, and algorithms to relate process variables to product attributes. Since 1995, the U.S. Department of Energy Office of Industrial Technology 's (OIT) program management strategy has reflected its commitment to increasing and documenting the commercial impact of OIT programs. OIT's management strategy for research and development has been in transition from a "technology push" strategy to a "market pull" strategy based on the needs of seven energy-and waste-intensive industries-steel, forest products, glass, metal casting, aluminum, chemicals, and petroleum refining. These industries, designated as Industries of the Future (IOF), are the focus of OIT programs. In 1997, agriculture, specifically renewable bioproducts, was added to the IOF group. The National Research Council Panel on Manufacturing Process Controls is part of the Committee on Industrial Technology Assessments (CITA), which was established to evaluate the OIT program strategy, to provide guidance during the transition to the new IOF strategy, and to assess the effects of the change in program strategy on cross-cutting technology programs, that is, technologies applicable to several of the IOF industries. The panel was established to identify key processes and needs for improved manufacturing control technology, especially the needs common to several IOF industries; identify specific research opportunities for addressing these common industry needs; suggest criteria for identifying and prioritizing research and development (R&D) to improve manufacturing controls technologies; and recommend means for implementing advances in control technologies.
