Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Vocabulary of Criminal Slang With Some Examples of Common Usages But it was not the aim to air views on criminology and penology in a preface, though it has seemed appropriate that the intelligence of interested men and women should be appealed to, as the widespread use of the following idioms has a deep significance. If this work achieves no other result than this it should be regarded as well worth while. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Vocabulary of Criminal Slang With Some Examples of Common Usages It is noticeably true that our average law officer or advocate is necessarily a specialist in one or perhaps a few, at most, of the many recognized branches of professional crime. The limitation is occasioned in part by prescribed capacity and in part by inexperience or unfamiliarity with criminals of all types and their methods. Efficiency in general correctional labor may undoubtedly be promoted by a fuller understanding of the linguistic acquirements of subjects to be dealt with in every day practice. It is hoped that the publication of this vocabulary of criminal terms will render material advantages to the conscientious workers in this large field. We are conscious of many errors of omission in the work and we request the co-operation of all who are interested in its utility. Only the essential and most pertinent or purely criminal vernacular usages have been selected from the mystical parlance of professional violators and their accomplices, for the reason that popular slang is so extensively comprehended as to make its publication of doubtful value as a new contribution to our literature. An analysis of the four hundred and thirty terms included in the vocabulary reveals the interesting fact that criminal idiom is largely an ingenious combination of epithet suggested by similitude and a perverted construction of essential and accidental attributes of things and powers to imply or express the things and actions themselves. An occult jargon on its face, yet systematic enough when the key is acquired. Some of the terms seem to have been derived by simple partition of legitimate English words, occasionally with the addition of euphonious prefix or suffix. Garner, President, LawProse, Inc. [1-2 new introduction], 292 pp. Originally published: Boston: The Christopher Publishing House, 1949. Monteleone was a police officer with thirty-two years of service throughout the United States. He compiled this collection of words and phrases used by the "gangster, tramp or hobo" over the course of a career that spanned the 1920s, 30s and 40s. Both instructive and amusing, it contains hundreds of entries relating to criminal matters of the time, such as "Academy" (a jail), "Across the River" (dead), "Grease the Track" (to fall under a moving train), "Looseners" (prunes), "Sprinkle the Flowers" (to distribute bribes), "Suey Bowel" (A Chinese opium den), "Write Short Stories" (to forge checks) and "Zib" (an easy victim). Also includes a table of hobo code symbols.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Professional Criminals of America My experience as a judge in the principal criminal court of the city and county of New York, has assured me of the great value of the contents of this volume, and my knowledge of the writer permits me to cheerfully endorse the trustworthiness of the information with which his book is replete. In my estimation the circulation of the volume will tend to familiarize the public with the faces, appearance and methods of the army of malefactors who, with keen eyes and active brains, are forever watching and planning to their detriment. The author has spread his vast knowledge of the criminal classes in a simple, straightforward narrative of facts, and the book supplies a want long felt in the community. There cannot be the slightest doubt but that it will prove an important medium in the prevention and detection of crime, and I therefore cheerfully give it my fullest endorsement and recommendation. Mugging was all right, so long as you mugged the right persons. The situation thus outlined is one of more than passing interest. Whatever the merely political out come may be, and it may be far-reaching, a sensitive point in our governmental nervous system has been touched and a condition uncovered that sooner or later must be diagnosed and cured. Book excerpt: With its unparalleled coverage of English slang of all types (from 18th-century cant to contemporary gay slang), and its uncluttered editorial apparatus, Cassell's Dictionary of Slang was warmly received when its first edition appeared in 1998. 'Brilliant.' said Mark Lawson on BBC2's The Late Review; 'This is a terrific piece of work - learned, entertaining, funny, stimulating' said Jonathan Meades in The Evening Standard. But now the world's best single-volume dictionary of English slang is about to get even better. Jonathon Green has spent the last seven years on a vast project: to research in depth the English slang vocabulary and to hunt down and record written instances of the use of as many slang words as possible. This has entailed trawling through more than 4000 books - plus song lyrics, TV and movie scripts, and many newspapers and magazines - for relevant material. The research has thrown up some fascinating results

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Criminals and Crime: Some Facts and Suggestions That this book has taken shape as a popular treatise is a departure from my original plan and purpose. But I do not regret the change. For apart from the main reason for it, explained in these pages, it has been urged upon me by men of light and leading that what is now needed is to convince the general public that the reforms here advocated are both important and practicable. Some of the most influential Judges of the High Court have spoken to me in this sense. On the last occasion on which I had the privilege of discussing the matter with Mr. Justice Wills - it was before his retirement - he renewed his assurances of sympathy, but raised the objection that the public were not ready to sanction the indefinitely prolonged imprisonment of offenders. I urged in reply that the public would fall into line, if the Judges would adopt Sir James Fitz James Stephen's proposal that a criminal's fate should be determined only after a formal public trial on the issue of his being a professional. DO not let us, in all the pomp and circumstance of stately history, blind ourselves to the fact that the crimes Of Frederick, or Napoleon, or their successors, are in essence no different from those Of Sheppard or Peace. We must not imagine that the bad man who happens to offend against those particular laws which constitute the criminal Code belongs to a peculiar or atavistic type, that he is a man set apart from the rest of his fellow-men by mental or physical peculiarities. That comforting theory of the Lombroso school has been exploded, and the ordinary inmate of our prisons shown to be only in a very slight degree below the average in mental and physical fitness of the normal man, a difference easily explained by the environment and conditions in which the ordinary criminal is bred. A certain English judge, asked as to the general Characteristics of the prisoners tried before him, said They are just like other people; in fact, I Often think that, but for different Opportunities and other accidents, the prisoner and I might very well be in one another's places. Greed, love of pleasure, writes a French judge, lust, idleness, anger, hatred, revenge, these are the chief causes of crime. These passions and desires are shared by rich and poor alike, by the educated and uneducated. They are inherent in human nature; the germ is in every man.
