As an honest (though over-sympathetic) picture of the Confederacy during the latter half of 1863 and the early months of 1864, it is one of the ... most informative of the relative few inclusive records left by outside observers of the Confederacy in its own time.

Finding easy access to military and civil leaders of the Confederacy, he had an opportunity to accompany the Confederate Army in its invasion of Pennsylvania and into the Battle of Gettysburg. Afterward, he spent some time in Charleston and went by way of Augusta and Atlanta to the Chattanooga area about the time of the Battle of Chickamauga. Retracing his way to Charleston, he went to the rail to Savannah and on to Macon, Montgomery, and Mobile, returning on a steamer up the Alabama River to Montgomery and back over the same road to Charleston. In the early spring of 1864, he ran the blockade to Nassau and proceeded to Havana and New York. Captain Ross gave considerable attention to military affairs, but he also made many comments about the life of the people. He found a friendly attitude towards everybody and everything and, without making any predictions, evidently believed that the Confederacy could never be conquered. This account first appeared in Blackwood's Magazine.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Within two months of Confederate General Robert E. Lee's surrender at Appomattox Court House on 9 April 1865, the Confederacy had collapsed, and its armed forces had ceased to exist. In the spring of 1865, the U.S. Army faced the unprecedented task of occupying eleven conquered Southern states and administering "Reconstruction"-the process by which the former rebellious states would be restored to the Union. But a rapid demobilization of the Army placed the remaining occupation troops at a disadvantage almost from the start. This brochure traces the Army's law enforcement, stability, and peacekeeping roles in the South from May 1865 to the end of Reconstruction in 1877, marking a unique period in American history. During that time, the Southern states remained under military occupation, and for several years, they were also ruled by military government. Veteran Army commanders such as Philip H. Sheridan, John M. Schofield, Daniel E. Sickles, Edward R. S. Canby, and Winfield S. Hancock may have found the work of Reconstruction less dangerous than fighting the Civil War had been, but they also found it no less challenging.

Book excerpt: We have for years needed a serious, scholarly, readable work on the Confederate nation that rounds up modem scholarship and offers a fresh and detached view of the whole subject. This work fills that order admirably ... [Thomas] sensibly and deftly integrates the course of Southern military fortunes with the concerns that shaped them and were shaped by them. In doing so he also manages to convey a sense of how the war itself deteriorated from something spirited and gallant to something base and mean and modern on both sides.
