Book excerpt: CHILDREN WILL LEARN THE WONDERFUL QUALITIES OF LOVE AND WISDOM (THROUGH AN ENJOYABLE STORY)! A little girl, Amelia, hopes to help the hungry children on the other side of a (Very Wide) river. When her plan comes crashing down, she soon finds that a far greater plan was unfolding all along! And in losing her highest ambition, she gained what she never thought possible. A POSITIVE AND INSPIRING STORY WITH CLEAR MORAL LESSONS. (*SPOILER ALERT*) Children will learn to . . . SEE THE BEST IN OTHERS: Though one crocodile, Ray, is gravely misunderstood, his kind heart and good intentions eventually come to light! Children learn the value of seeing the best in people around them. HELP THOSE IN NEED: Children are inspired (by Amelia's loving example) to care for those in need as they grow up. This is a great opportunity to teach your child about poverty and the value of kindness. MAKE GOOD DECISIONS: The wiser crocodile, rather than simply seeing bright red apples, sees the tiny shiny seeds within. This leads to long-lasting change! Children are encouraged to think ahead and make good decisions as they grow up. KEEP HOPE NO MATTER WHAT: Children will be certain (just like Amelia) that all hope is lost, just before they realise it was only waiting to be found! This will encourage their hearts to never give up and always live in the light of hope. WHAT SETS THIS BOOK APART? This fun and inspiring fable-like story carries compelling moral lessons. This could lead to some excellent discussions on why some children live in poverty or how we can best care for those in need. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A “miraculous” (Newsweek) human drama, based on a true story, from the renowned author of The Prince of Tides and The Great Santini The island is nearly deserted, haunting, beautiful. Across a slip of ocean lies South Carolina. But for the handful of families on Yamacraw Island, America is a world away. For years the people here lived proudly from the sea, but now its waters are not safe. Waste from industry threatens their very existence unless, somehow, they can learn a new way. But they will learn nothing without someone to teach them, and their school has no teacher—until one man gives a year of his life to the island and its people. Praise for The Water Is Wide “Miraculous . . . an experience of joy.”—Newsweek “A powerfully moving book . . . You will laugh, you will weep, you will be proud and you will rail . . . and you will learn to love the man.”—Charleston News and Courier “A hell of a good story.”—The New York Times “Few novelists write as well, and none as beautifully.”—Lexington Herald-Leader “[Pat] Conroy cuts through his experiences with a sharp edge of irony. . . . He brings emotion, writing talent and anger to his story.”—Baltimore Sun

Book Synopsis The Native Americans of the Texas Edwards Plateau, 1582-1799 by : Maria F. Wade
Download or read book The Native Americans of the Texas Edwards Plateau, 1582-1799 written by Maria F. Wade and published by University of Texas Press. This book was released on 2010-01-01 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 2003 – Texas Old Missions and Forts Restoration Association Book Award Winner – Texas Catholic Historical Society 2004 – Finalist: Friends of the Dallas Public Library Award for Book Making the Most Significant Contribution to Knowledge – Texas Institute of Letters The region that now encompasses Central Texas and northern Coahuila, Mexico, was once inhabited by numerous Native hunter-gather groups whose identities and lifeways we are only now learning through archaeological discoveries and painstaking research into Spanish and French colonial records. From these key sources, Maria F. Wade has compiled this first comprehensive ethnohistory of the Native groups that inhabited the Texas Edwards Plateau and surrounding areas during most of the Spanish colonial era. Much of the book deals with events that took place late in the seventeenth century, when Native groups and Europeans began to have their first sustained contact in the region. Wade identifies twenty-one Native groups, including the Jumano, who inhabited the Edwards Plateau at that time. She offers evidence that the groups had sophisticated social and cultural mechanisms, including extensive information networks, ladino cultural brokers, broad-based coalitions, and individuals with dual-ethnic status. She also tracks the eastern movement of Spanish colonizers into the Edwards Plateau region, explores the relationships among Native groups and between those groups and European colonizers, and develops a timeline that places isolated events and singular individuals within broad historical processes.

It then follows their most challenging odyssey as they are driven out of their homes by great cruelty from four different states, and then finally completely out of the union itself. In the middle of the winter, women, children, and men were forced to cross the frozen Mississippi and head for their new home in the rocky mountains of Utah. After a year and a half of many trials on the trail, they finally made it to the great basin and settled alongside the Great Salt Lake to build a city. Fifty years later Utah became a most beautiful state of the union.
Book Synopsis This Land Is My Land by : Clifford D. Cope
Download or read book This Land Is My Land written by Clifford D. Cope and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2011-08-04 with total page 345 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Land is My Land is a historical fictional story about the life and adventures of the soldiers, artisans, and clergy under the leadership of Hidalgo Don Hernando De Soto beginning in the year of 1538 and coming to a tiring end in 1542. The theme illustrates the difficulty of men and women in the first exploration of La Florida and its damaging effects to new lands and the indigenous people who had founded the land many years earlier. It elaborates how exploration is irresistible to human beings and will always have its good and bad outcomes. They begin with about seven hundred and fifty men and women of various cultural and ethnic backgrounds, mostly Portuguese and Spaniard. The route of exploration went through Cuba, 10 states and Mexico ending with about two hundred and twenty-six survivors. The protagonist is the gold and land-seeking explorer and Adelantado Don Hernando De Soto searching for new lands and riches to aid in his own as well as his countries profits. After his death, Luis de Moscoso follows him as the leader to get the remaining explorers safely to the city of Mexico. It does not demonstrate a one sided wrongdoing but the unethical and unfair actions that come about when differently cultivated humans meet. It is not a heartwarming story of great adventures, which leads to a Thanksgiving. It describes the four-year march across the interior of todays southeastern United States based on information the author gathered from translations of four of the original notes and writing of the original company.

Download or read book Angling Days written by Robert DeMott and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2016-06-28 with total page 285 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “From the very first, it seems, fishing was a respite and a therapy along with all of its other potentially redemptive qualities.” —Robert DeMott Spanning more than forty-five years, Angling Days is a collection of Robert DeMott’s numerous journal entries, each a small essay in itself, jotted down during the placid moments of fishing in and along the streams and rivers of North America. Through his journaling, DeMott carries on the angling tradition of channeling the tranquility of fly fishing into creative endeavors, whether by painting, sketching, fly tying, or writing. For him, it was writing—something he did whenever he could, whether in the midst of fishing or during a break away from the water. Angling Days is a lifetime of work, a chronicle of what it is to be an angler seeking the most pristine waters and the smartest fish. It is a collection of entries and musings in the vein of DeMott’s literary hero, Henry David Thoreau, and promises to shine a new light on the art and joy of fly fishing.
