Book excerpt: Were it not for the online match-making site we visited, my wife Auren and I would have never met. I lived in a large house on a man-made lake in Scottsdale. She lived some forty miles away high up in the mountains of Superior, AZ. She was busy, raising a daughter, working in a doctor''s office, taking college courses online, and transcribing medical records at night. Initially, we emailed and telephoned...fluid, but brief. She quickly dismissed me when she realized I was fourteen years her senior. Undaunted, I composed and sent a poem to her, effecting that as an attorney, I had often found myself appealing for a second chance. Might we continue talking and then meet at some point? Yes...she said. It was a late morning in June when she climbed aboard my Jaguar convertible with what appeared to be a degree of anticipation. The morning was crisp, cool, and sunny. Birds filled the trees and chirped as if they were hired to sing for the occasion, this our first meeting. Cold dry air blew out from the Jag''s vents. You just couldn''t help but feel good in the Jag. We went to lunch and followed that with a trip across town to look at antiques. As we kept up the chit-chat, she became more animated, open, giving every indication that she seemed to be having fun. Our chemistry was building and rightfully so. Were we going to be good together right out of the box? At my place that evening, I cooked her a dinner of pasta with white sauce and halibut. Later into the night, outside by the pool, we slowly danced to Frank while holding each other closely. She was thin and I liked her style of thin. She fit closely to me while held in my arms. The air seemed lightly scented in our favor. I asked that she not make the long drive home. That night in bed, we both felt shy, (especially me) while we held each other and talked, caressed, and kissed. Our conversation came easily...we talked of love, of past disappointments of love and the promises of new love. And we kissed...tenderly and lovingly, a respite lasting for more than an hour. Then, we were like spoons in a drawer when I first struggled inside her tight little body, gently pushing all the way inside. She repeatedly gasped. Ultimately, familiar rhythms were born as we made love. In the early morning, we made love again in active, sexually mutual exchanges...the beginnings of a true love? When we kissed...she kissed me passionately, like a wife who deeply in love might kiss her husband before sending him off to war. Later that same morning I asked her, might we find a way to make it work? Yes...she whispered to me softly. We quickly married. Soon...there was talk of a baby. To have a child with her would not be much of a stretch for me. I had been a very active parent with my kids. I was a good father. So...she and I made the most wonderful little baby boy ever. But after our little son was born, she ultimately, unconscious or not, determined that he was her everything...and I, her husband and his father, started to become no more than an unwanted and unnecessary circumstance. Our relationship changed: with her focus now solely on our beautiful little Jett. He and his safety and happiness took over - or so she rationalized. Our marriage fell apart. I wanted to be even closer to her - she said she couldn''t. I found the burden of unrequited love quite heavy. If I could not have a fulfilling relationship with my wife and we were to divorce, I would insist upon an equal amount of independent time with my beautiful son - something I never had - and the one thing she would never give up. Auren has had him exclusively for 5 years. In all practicality, I am dead to him, bit by her, the black widow...left to be gobbled up by the legal system. She sent me to jail. Jail nearly killed me and ruined my air ambulance business. I had hoped she would recognize that my being jailed would not help. She wasn''t. And she forgot our promise - be kind to each other as we split up.
