Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Golden Book of Venice: A Historical Romance of the 16th Century Venice, with her life and glory but a memory, is still the citta nobilissima, - a city of moods, - a11 beautiful to the beauty-lover, all mystic to the dreamer; between the wonderful blue of the water and the sky she floats like a mirage - visionary unreal - and under the spell of her fascination we are not critics, but lovers. We see the pathos, not the scars of her desolation, and the splendor of her past is too much a part of her to be forgotten, though the gold is dim upon her palace - fronts, and the sheen of her precious marbles has lost its bloom, and the colors of the laughing Giorgione have faded like his smile. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Venice It is to her own domain, embraced by her mutable yet eternally faithful ocean-lover, that we must still go to see the relics of her pomp. The old sternness has passed from her face, that compelling sovereignty which gave her rank among the greatest potentates of the Middle Age; her features, portrayed by these latter days, are mellowed; a veil of golden haze softens the bold outlines of that imperious countenance. We are sometimes tempted to forget that the cup held by the enchanter, Venice, was filled once with no dream-inducing liquor, but with a strong potion to fire the nerves of heroes. Viewing Venice in her greater days, it is impossible to make that sepa ration between the artist and the man of action so deadly to action and to art. The portraits of. Though no longer driven by the lust of adventure that had spurred him in his youth, he was still hunted athwart the world, hunted now by a restlessness due to the approach of old age. His yearning for Venice, the city of his birth, grew so intense that, like a wounded bird slowly circling downwards in its death flight, he began to move in ever-narrowing circles. Again and again, during the last ten years of his exile, he had implored the Supreme Council for leave to return home. Erstwhile, in the drafting of these petitions - a work in which he was a past master - a defiant, wilful spirit seemed to have guided his pen; at times even he appeared to take a grim delight in his frowardness. But of late his requests had been couched in humble, beseeching words which displayed, ever more plainly, the ache of homesickness and genuine repentance. Book excerpt: Pietro Bembo (1470–1547), a Venetian nobleman, later a cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church, was a celebrated Latin stylist and was widely admired for his writings in Italian as well. His early dialogue on the subject of love influenced the development of the literary vernacular, as did his Prose della volgar lingua (1525). From 1513 to 1521 he served Pope Leo X as Latin secretary and became known as the leading advocate of Ciceronian Latin in Europe and of the Tuscan dialect within Italy. He was named official historian of Venice in 1529 and began to compose in Latin his continuation of the city's history in twelve books, covering the years from 1487 to 1513. Although the work chronicles internal politics and events, much of it is devoted to the external affairs of Venice, principally conflicts with other European states (France, Spain, the Holy Roman Empire, Milan, and the papacy) and with the Turks in the East.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Shakespeare's Merchant of Venice Night had fallen as they drew near to Belmont. The moon light lay spread among the statues and cypresses in Portia's garden, where on a grassy bank the two lovers, Lorenzo and Jessica, talked together in low antiphons such as lovers use, and in the pauses of their talk gazed and drank in the beauty of the heavens. Word had come that the mistress of the house would return home before daybreak and close upon this came a mes senger with the news that Bassanio, too, might be expected. Lorenzo called for music: no gentler or more gracious welcome could there be for the home-comers, should they be arriving; and if not, still he and Jessica could sit till the moonlight faded, and let the sweet sounds creep in their ears, while the stillness of the garden, the embracing silent night, made harmony with the hidden lutes, as the listening heart might hear its own beating harmonies whispered back from the stars paving the floor of heaven. Book excerpt: In the attic of their old family palazzo on the Grand Canal, Andrea di Robilant's father had found the love letters of their ancestor Andrea Memmo, one of the last great Venetian statesmen, to a beautiful half-English girl named Giustiniana Wynne. Some of the letters were written in code, which di Robilant and his father cracked to reveal an illicit passion: Giustiniana was not of the elite ruling class and would never have been considered a suitable match for Andrea. But their acts of devotion were startlingly brazen. As their courtship unfolds, they plot elaborate marriage schemes that offend everyone, arrange secret trysts in borrowed rooms, cause trouble for the servants who must ferry their forbidden correspondence, and even weather an unwanted pregnancy, from which Giustiniana, with her wits and ingenuity and some crucial assistance from the infamous Casanova, emerges unscathed.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Neapolitan Lovers British subjects all the world over, being familiar with the life of Nelson, will remember that having won the battle of the Nile and so blocked up Bonaparte and his army in Egypt, he returned to Naples in the poor wretched Vanguard, as he described his vessel, sighting the city on 22nd September, 1798. Dumas opens the present romance on the following day when Ferdinand IV., King of the Two Sicilies, and his Queen Maria Carolina, sister of Marie Antoinette; Caracciolo, accompanied by the British Minister, Sir William Hamilton with his celebrated wife who were also in the royal galley, came out into the bay of Naples to meet the saviour of Italy, as the Queen called our greatest Admiral. Three months later, almost day for day, after that brilliant and joyous reception on the water. Nelson, on a wild, stormy night, secretly and stealthily embarked King Ferdinand, his family and courtiers in three barges, and having thus transported them on board the Vanguard, conveyed them from Naples to Palermo. What had occurred during these three months? Why this royal flight in the dead of night under the protection of Nelson?
