Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Culture of Simplicity These pages have been written in the interims of a busy life; the burden of their intent being to emphasize a saying of James Russell Lowell's that the highest outcome of culture is simplicity. Much has been written of late concerning simplicity and simple living. It is the controlling note all but drowned, yet clamouring for a bear ing, in a materialistic age. And we believe it to be a spiritual note too. Such at least we have regarded it in these chapters. The message of the Eternal is ever the same, but the language in which it is expressed varies with the type and temperament of the peo ple to whom it comes; and to an age steeped in mammonism and worship of the flesh, the evangel calling for a voice and a deliverance is that simplicity is culture; simplicity is spirituality; simplicity is power; the spir itual is the solution of everything. Back to culture then, the culture of the cross, the culture that is towards the Christ. This is the gospel for an age of unrest. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Simplicity A slackening of speed, and a rattling as the train passed over some points, causing the carriages to rock and jolt rather more than was entirely pleasant to their occupants, told the passengers that another station had been reached. To most of them, however, this was a fact of small importance, as the station was only a small wayside one, and if any of them gave a second thought to the matter, or expressed an opinion about it, it was to wish that the presiding powers of the railway company would provide a train which would accomplish the twenty mile cross-country journey in anything less than an hour, and which would start not later than twenty minutes after its advertised time. Book excerpt: The American composer Carl Ruggles (1876-1971) wrote a small number of powerful, finely crafted, intensely dissonant, and utterly individual works. Although sometimes viewed as ?a stubbornly reclusive New Englander, painstakingly creating his uncompromisingly dissonant music in the wilds of Vermont, ?Ruggles was in fact an integral member of a close-knit group of composers known as the ?ultramoderns, ? which included (among others) Charles Seeger, Ruth Crawford Seeger, Henry Cowell, Edgard Varèse, Dane Rudhyar, and Charles Ives (mainly in the role of financier). The ultramoderns were interested in creating a distinctive dissonant American music free of the cultural hegemony of European musical authority and convention. As part of this group, Ruggles formed especially strong ties with Charles Ives__?-each considered the other the world's second-best composer?-and with Charles Seeger, whose theory of dissonant counterpoint exerted a strong influence on Ruggles' evolving compositional style. This study examines the distinctive musical characteristics and compositional procedures that characterize Ruggles' work, and places them in the context of Ruggles?' spiritual aesthetic of the transcendent and the sublime.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Steven J. Duby examines the doctrine of divine simplicity. This discussion is centered around the three distinguishing features: grounding in biblical exegesis, use of Thomas Aquinas and the Reformed Orthodox; and the writings of modern systematic and philosophical theologians. Duby outlines the general history of the Christian doctrine of divine simplicity and discusses the methodological traits and essential contents of the dogmatic account. He substantiates the claims of the doctrine of divine simplicity by demonstrating that they are implied and required by the scriptural account of God. Duby considers how simplicity is inferred from God's singularity and aseity, as well as how it is inferred from God's immutability and infinity, and the Christian doctrine of creation. The discussion ends with the response to major objections to simplicity, namely that the doctrine does not pay heed to the plurality of the divine attributes, that it eradicates God's freedom in creating the world and acting toward us; and that it does not cohere with the personal distinctions to be made in the doctrine of the Trinity.

Book excerpt: Ten laws of simplicity for business, technology, and design that teach us how to need less but get more. Finally, we are learning that simplicity equals sanity. We're rebelling against technology that's too complicated, DVD players with too many menus, and software accompanied by 75-megabyte "read me" manuals. The iPod's clean gadgetry has made simplicity hip. But sometimes we find ourselves caught up in the simplicity paradox: we want something that's simple and easy to use, but also does all the complex things we might ever want it to do. In The Laws of Simplicity, John Maeda offers ten laws for balancing simplicity and complexity in business, technology, and design—guidelines for needing less and actually getting more. Maeda—a professor in MIT's Media Lab and a world-renowned graphic designer—explores the question of how we can redefine the notion of "improved" so that it doesn't always mean something more, something added on. Maeda's first law of simplicity is "Reduce." It's not necessarily beneficial to add technology features just because we can. And the features that we do have must be organized (Law 2) in a sensible hierarchy so users aren't distracted by features and functions they don't need. But simplicity is not less just for the sake of less. Skip ahead to Law 9: "Failure: Accept the fact that some things can never be made simple." Maeda's concise guide to simplicity in the digital age shows us how this idea can be a cornerstone of organizations and their products—how it can drive both business and technology. We can learn to simplify without sacrificing comfort and meaning, and we can achieve the balance described in Law 10. This law, which Maeda calls "The One," tells us: "Simplicity is about subtracting the obvious, and adding the meaningful."

Book excerpt: When Voluntary Simplicity was first published in 1981, it quickly became recognized as a powerful and visionary work in the emerging dialogue over sustainable ways of living. Now, more than ten years later and with many of the planet's environmental stresses having become more urgent than ever, Duane Elgin has revised and updated his revolutionary book. Voluntary Simplicity is not a book about living in poverty; it is a book about living with balance. It illuminates the pattern of changes that an increasing number of Americans are making in their everyday lives -- adjustments in day-to-day living that are an active, positive response to the complex dilemmas of our time. By embracing, either partially or totally, the tenets of voluntary simplicity -- frugal consumption, ecological awareness, and personal growth -- people can change their lives. And in the process, they have the power to change the world. First published in 1981, Voluntary Simplicity was instantly recognized as a visionary work. The New York Times called it "seminal"; the Wall Street Journal noted that it was "considered the movement's Bible." Revised in 1993 to address the trend toward downshifting, this pertinent book helps us to adjust our thoughts, habits, and goals and embrace the key elements of simplicity: frugal consumption, ecological awareness and personal growth.
