Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A respected and efficient cavalry colonel (later brigadier general) under General Judson Kilpatrick, he wrote: "I never fired but four shots at the enemy during the war and feel thankful to believe I never killed anybody." But he came near being killed plenty of times himself while commanding in battle. He helped William Tecumseh Sherman cut a swath across Georgia and the Carolinas and saw the last shots fired in the American Civil War. He lived to write one of the most interesting and compelling memoirs of a Union cavalry commander. A compassionate man, he more than once stopped to give aid to dying Confederates and was deeply affected by seeing men die so young. He included some very interesting observations about meeting former Confederates in the South after the war. Every memoir of the American Civil War provides us with another view of the catastrophe that changed the country forever. Only eighteen years old, Mosgrove fought with some of the leading lights of the Southern cause as he risked life and limb with his comrades in battle. In a work of great affection and erudition that took him years to write, Mosgrove tells the true story of his time in arms with the Fourth Kentucky Cavalry Regiment. After the war, Mosgrove became a lawyer, got married and had a family, and published this work in 1895. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Every great battle takes on new perspectives and meaning when viewed from the prone position of the private soldier, as opposed to the broad sweep of after-battle reports. Antietam, Fredericksburg, Gettysburg, Spottslyvania, Cold Harbor, Petersburg...Theodore Gerrish was at them all with Colonel Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain's 20th Maine Regiment. His vivid, compassionate, and often humorous telling is from the spot on the field where the minie-balls are thickest and the cannonading is deafening. This is one of the best private-soldier memoirs of the American Civil War in its scope and its minute details. The views Gerrish provides at the end of famous officers as seen from the private soldier's point of view include Grant, Meade, Hooker, Josuah Lawrence Chamberlain, and others with whom he came in contact. Some of the humor: “Chaplain, will you be kind enough to tell me what the two capital letters, B.C., stand for, when they are printed together upon anything?” “O, yes. It means before the birth of our Saviour, previous to the beginning of the Christian era.” He proceeded to give quite a profound theological exposition of the matter, and then inquired, “Why did you ask so unusual a question?” “O, nothin’,” answered the innocent Dick, “only we have seen it stamped on these sheets of hard-tack, and were curious to know why it was there.” Of the African-Americans who fought, Gerrish says: "As these two races march beside each other in the struggle of life, we only ask and demand that those who, in their poverty, did all they could to save the nation and assist its defenders, shall not be deprived of their sacred rights." Front-line letters and diaries of the Civil War bring an immediacy to a long-ago event and connect us to these everyday men and women who lived it. Book excerpt: Only fourteen years old when he first tried enlisting in the Union army, he was not quite seventeen when he mustered out at the end of the war. Along the way, Stanton Perry Allen saw plenty of fighting and dying, and served on the staff of General George Gordon Meade, the hero of Gettysburg. In this hilarious, at times irreverent, but also sorrowful and respectful memoir, Allen brought his skill as a professional writer and observer to the creation of one of the most pleasurable Civil War memoirs you'll ever read. After the war he was a journalist, editor, lieutenant in the New York National Guard, and a clergyman. His proximity to great events and people, and his ability to bring those years to life makes this a cherished personal account of the American Civil War. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Without question, one of the premier classic books on the American Indian Wars. John Frederick Finerty was a famous journalist for the Chicago "Times" who went into the field to report on the U.S. government's efforts to force Native Americans onto reservations. In 1876, Finerty was with General George Crook's forces at the Battle of the Rosebud. Part of Crook's aim was to connect with George Armstrong Custer's 7th Cavalry at the Little Bighorn. It never happened and Custer was killed along with five companies of his regiment by Crazy Horse, Gall, Sitting Bull, Rain-in-the-Face and other leaders. A teenage refugee from the Irish revolutionary movement, Finerty immigrated to the U.S. in 1864 and signed up to fight in the Civil War. By 1870 he was writing for newspapers, eventually making a national name for himself. He repeatedly went to the West to cover the Indian Wars and wrote with great intelligence, humor, and compassion about what he saw. Always self-deprecating and sardonic, he nevertheless had this to say to would-be Western journalists: “Let no easy-going journalist suppose that an Indian campaign is a picnic. If he goes out on such business he must go prepared to ride his forty or fifty miles a day, go sometimes on half rations, sleep on the ground with small covering, roast, sweat, freeze, and make the acquaintance of such vermin or reptiles as may flourish in the vicinity of his couch; and, finally, be ready to fight Sitting Bull or Satan when the trouble begins, for God and the United States hate non-combatants.” His conclusions about the Indian War included this: "White greed is not by any means satisfied, even though the fairest portion of the Sioux reservations have been given up to settlement...we of the Caucasian race must confess, however reluctantly, that even the red Indian has some rights on the soil which bore him that the whites are bound to respect." You'll have a hard time putting this one down. Expanded and heavily annotated with information about events and people. Book excerpt: Envision 10,000 mounted men of one of the best cavalries the world has ever produced strung out along 13 miles, marching around Robert E. Lee's right flank, taunting J.E.B. Stuart to come out and fight. In one of the most thrilling and detailed accounts of one of the most important battles of the American Civil War that most people know nothing of, James Kidd tells this story and much more of the Michigan Wolverine Cavalry under the command of George Armstrong Custer. The popular image of General Custer, James Kidd wrote in 1908, is incorrect. He was not reckless or wasteful of men. The battle was Yellow Tavern, part of the Spottslyvania fight, and Phil Sheridan later said he believed it was the greatest cavalry engagement of the Civil War. J.E.B. Stuart was fatally wounded in the fight. At Gettysburg, Brandy Station, the Trevillian Raid, Kilpatrick's Richmond raid, and the Shennandoah Valley, the Wolverines played a crucial role in the Union victory. Kidd also provides wonderful details about the movement of large cavalry units, especially when they must be turned in battle. In one of the best-written memoirs of the Civil War, Kidd has presented a picture of the Michigan Cavalry and its unforgettable leader that helps complete the image of Custer as a soldier. Yet, Tolstoy's shorter novels (i.e., novellas) are filled with all the war, adventure, comedy, religion, tragedy, and Russian tradition that inhabit the longer novels of the Russian bear of literature. Andrew Barger, editor of the best selling anthology, "Leo Tolstoy's 20 Greatest Short Stories Annotated," has gathered the very best of Tolstoy's novellas into one remarkable collection that includes hundreds of annotations of difficult Russian terms and sheds light on historic figures mentioned in the stories. But there is much more to this anthology. Andrew has included a short biography on Tolstoy and a chronology of his life and publications. Read these fascinating novellas today: 1) The Invaders - A Russian team moves against Shamyl and his Islamic army in the Caucasus, which is based on Tolstoy's military experiences in the 1850s. 2) The Death of Ivan Ilyich - When a man who has done good his entire life is stricken with an illness, it makes him question everything. 3) Two Hussars - When a hell-raiser takes lodging in a small Russian city, debauchery is inevitable but will it be matched years later by his son? 4) Father Sergius - The taboo subject of a priest being subjected to physical temptation is explored in one of Tolstoy's most scandalous stories. 5) Master & Man - By the end of this snowstorm adventure, you will be asking yourself, Who is the master and who is the servant? What do some of the world's greatest literary minds have to say about the works of Tolstoy: A second Shakespeare. Gustave Flaubert No English novelist is as great as Tolstoy. E.M. Forster The greatest Russian writer of prose fiction. Vladimir Nabokov The greatest of all novelists. Virginia Woolf Read the shorter novels of Leo Tolstoy today: http://www.AndrewBarger.com

Book excerpt: In all of the dusty volumes of Civil War memoirs that no one reads anymore, once in a while we come across one such as this. Written by a man with literary aspirations from a regiment of like-minded soldiers, Albert Marshall’s use of the pen produced more eloquence than did that of many of his contemporaries. He left one of the most compelling accounts of the siege of Vicksburg from a private soldier's point of view. He also wrote of service in Texas, which is rare among Civil War memoirs. Eloquent, funny, poignant, and immensely satisfying, Marshall's memoir from his journal is one of the best of the genre. She had married a soldier in 1854 and headed out to his post in the wilds of Texas. This is their story as pioneers, her husband attached to the U.S. Mounted Rifles. Of privations she has much to write but she also notes: "The truth is, all army women, from the wife of the commanding general down to the wife of a second lieutenant, are treated with so much courtesy and politeness by army officers that they do not like anything that has the least appearance of a slight or an infringement of their rights. They never grow old in a garrison, and always receive attentions to which no woman in citizen life is accustomed when no longer young." Through births, deaths, and seemingly endless travels to new posts, Lydia followed her husband to the end of his long life as a soldier. She remembers one incident of a death where the burial services were read by Lieutenant Joseph Wheeler, later a major-general in the Confederacy. Grant asked to stop by the grave of his friend and fellow West Point cadet, Alexander Hays, who had fallen at the Battle of the Wilderness. Newsmen reported that Grant openly wept at the graveside. After having played a pivotal role commanding the forces that turned back Pickett's Charge at Gettysburg, and having exposed himself on other open battlefields, the dense Wilderness was not the place to have expected Hays to fall. At Gettysburg, it was later written: "We cannot summarize here what Hays' Division did on the third day when the final blow, embodied in Pickett's and Pettigrew's charge, fell directly upon their front. When the fight ended that afternoon fifteen colors and over two thousand prisoners fell into their hands. Magnificently were they led by their division commander [Hays]." On hearing of his death in battle, Grant quietly remarked as he sat beneath a tree, "He was a man who would never follow, but would always lead in battle." Here is the definitive biography of Major General Alexander Hays, from childhood to West Point to the Mexican War and on to the American Civil War.
