Head for the calculation of two-dimensional or axisymmetric, incompressible, laminar boundary layers is reworked into an analytical form, thereby eliminating the graphical data of Head's original method. The revised method is coded for digital computer solution and a number of test cases are computed. The numerical results for these test cases are compared with very accurate boundary layer solutions obtained by a finite-difference method and also results obtained using the Pohlhausen momentum-integral method. It was found that the Head method is vastly superior to the Pohlhausen method yet requires only about the same computational expense. Head's method yields very accurate results even for highly nonsimilar boundary layers. (Author).

The method of analysis is developed for steady, compressible, nonviscous, irrotational flow that is assumed uniform normal to the surfaces of revolution. Incompressible solutions on a mean surface of revolution between the hub and shroud are presented for four rates through each of two centrifugal impellers with the same hub-shroud contours but with different blade spacings. In addition, correlation equations are developed whereby the velocity components and the stream function distribution can be predicted for compressible or incompressible flow in straight-blade impellers only, with any tip speed, flow rate, area variation, blade spacing, and for any flow surface of revolution.

Applications of this procedure are illustrated by various examples of incompressible, laminar flows in the limits of large and small Prandtl numbers. A distinguished limit of large Prandtl number and small mass-transfer rate is easily identified, and some limiting solutions are presented for the porous-plate configuration. Calculations for the cases with small Prandtl numbers explicitly demonstrate the usefulness of the method in studying transient heat-conduction problems. The remarkable combination of accuracy and simplicity represents the principal merit of the method. (Author).
