Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Treatise on the Art of Music: In Which the Elements of Harmony and Air Are Practically Considered, and Illustrated by an Hundred and Fifty Examples in Notes I l'hould therefore be happy if I could perfuade myfelf that the following {beets will have any effect in promoting a Ta e for the bell kind of Molic, from which we reem to have been departing daily of late years. There is a falhion, to the Power of which the wifelt are {abject in fome degree, in Mulie as in other things and a love of novelty will tempt us to prefer the worfc to the better, as we prefer an inconvenient unnatural falhion in our drefs, and really come to think it handfome, only becaul'e we have it continually before our Eyes. But in the imitative Arts, there certainly is a True Sublime, which cannot vary as the humour of the world does, but is founded in Nature and Reafon and has the fan ion of experience. Why has not Virgil grown old in fevcnteen hundred years, but becaufe his Work is founded in Nature, and is carried on according to the hell and {tricked Rules of Art? Yet to a School-boy it is drudgery to read him; and all-his beauties pars by unohferved and neglected, till the ta e is formed by habit and practice to untlcrlland and enjoy them. Book excerpt: This book is the collection of papers that came out of an interdisciplinary symposium held in the spring of 1991 in the Republic of San Marino. The conference "Effects of War on Society" was planned as the first in a series aimed ultimately at placing in perspective the sociocultural variables that make outbreaks of war probable, and delineating for researchers and policy makers alike some important steps that can be taken to control these variables. This is Volume 1 of a series entitled "Studies on the Nature of War", which the University of Rochester Press has been publishing from Volume 2 (War and Ethnicity: Global Connections and Local Violence (1997)). after much demand, we are now distributing this book on behalf of the conference organizers, The Center for Interdisciplinary Research on Social Stress, in San Marino.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Revealing the connections between the veneration of national landscape and eighteenth- century English vocal music, this study restores English music’s relationship with the picturesque. In the eighteenth century, the emerging taste for the picturesque was central to British aesthetics, as poets and painters gained popularity by glorifying the local landscape in works concurrent with the emergence of native countryside tourism. Yet English music was seldom discussed as a medium for conveying national scenic beauty. Stephen Groves explores this gap, and shows how secular song, the glee, and national theatre music expressed a uniquely English engagement with landscape. Using an interdisciplinary approach, Groves addresses the apparent ‘silence’ of the English picturesque. The book draws on analysis of the visualisations present in the texts of English vocal music, and their musical treatment, to demonstrate how local composers incorporated celebrations of landscape into their works. The final chapter shows that the English picturesque was a crucial influence on Joseph Haydn’s oratorio The Seasons. Suitable for anyone with an interest in eighteenth- century music, aesthetics, and the natural environment, this book will appeal to a wide range of specialists and non- specialists alike.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the late eighteenth century, a musical–cultural phenomenon swept the globe. The English square piano—invented in the early 1760s by an entrepreneurial German guitar maker in London—not only became an indispensable part of social life, but also inspired the creation of an expressive and scintillating repertoire. Square pianos reinforced music as life’s counterpoint, and were played by royalty, by musicians of the highest calibre and by aspiring amateurs alike. On Sunday, 13 May 1787, a square piano departed from Portsmouth on board the Sirius, the flagship of the First Fleet, bound for Botany Bay. Who made the First Fleet piano, and when was it made? Who owned it? Who played it, and who listened? What music did the instrument sound out, and within what contexts was its voice heard? What became of the First Fleet piano after its arrival on antipodean soil, and who played a part in the instrument’s subsequent history? Two extant instruments contend for the title ‘First Fleet piano’; which of these made the epic journey to Botany Bay in 1787–88? The First Fleet Piano: A Musician’s View answers these questions, and provides tantalising glimpses of social and cultural life both in Georgian England and in the early colony at Sydney Cove. The First Fleet piano is placed within the musical and social contexts for which it was created, and narratives of the individuals whose lives have been touched by the instrument are woven together into an account of the First Fleet piano’s conjunction with the forces of history. View ‘The First Fleet Piano: Volume Two Appendices’. Note: Volume 1 and 2 are sold as a set ($180 for both) and cannot be purchased separately.

Glover devoted her life to the creation and propagation of a way of teaching class music that was meticulously devised, musically rigorous, and successfully promulgated. Southcott analyzes Glover’s methods, history, and memory, and works to correct inaccuracies and misrepresentations that have emerged since Glover’s death.
