Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Treatise on Elementary and Higher Algebra Mr principal object in the preparation of this work has been to give the results of certain speculations which have occupied my attention, and which seem to constitute very important additions to the science of Alge bra. Thus, at page 489, etc., the roots of an equation are developed into a series, and thence it is shown that an equation of the nth degree must have n roots. At pages 457, etc., and 464, etc., the solutions of Binomial Equations and the Irreducible case of Cubic Equations are completed by pure Algebra. And at page 512, etc., a new and general method is given for the development of the roots of equations, 'which seems to be much more simple than any heretofore proposed. I have endeavored to give a full view of the present state of the Science, and to adapt my work to the wants of teachers and pupils, not only in our Colleges and Academies, but in schools of a primary character. Great pains have been taken to present the principles and processes of the Science in so clear a manner that the student may readily understand them, and be fully satisfied as to their correctness. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Treatise on Algebra The following work is designed for the use of the higher classes of Schools and the junior students in the Universities. Although the book is complete in itself, in the sense that it begins at the beginning, it is expected that students who use it will have previously read some more elementary work on Algebra: the simpler parts of the subject are therefore treated somewhat briefly. I have ventured to make one important change from the usual order adopted in English text-books on Algebra, namely by considering some of the tests of the conver geney of infinite series before making any use of such series: this change will, I feel sure, be generally approved. The order in which the different chapters of the book may be read is, however, to a great extent optional. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Elementary Treatise on Algebra This small compendium embraces all which is comprised in the former large and expensive editions, that is either practically useful or theoretically valuable. By introducing Equations and Problems at the earliest stage possible, a novel and instructive feature - which the editor is persuaded cannot fail to excite the curiosity and stimu late the ardour of the young algebraist, so as t0'induce him to pursue his studies with more than usual alacrity, intelligence, and success - has been given to the work. A great variety of new, easy, and interesting problems, which are not contained in former editions, have thus been interspersed through the several chapters. Besides these additions many alterations have been made, either for the sake of uniformity of arrangement, or of rendering the subject still more easy and accessible to youthful minds. Mr. Bridge, nearly forty years ago, was not without a hope that his Elemen tary Treatise on Algebra, ' would find its way into our Public Schools where, it was very well known, this branch of education was [then] but little attended to and it is now confidently hoped, that this new edition will (in consequence of its cheap and improved form) find its way into many schools, where this science is not yet sufficiently attended to. And thus be the means of rendering this instructive study a subject of general education. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Higher Algebra: A Sequel to Elementary Algebra for Schools The present work is intended as a sequel to our Elementary Algebra for Schools. The first few chapters are devoted to a fuller discussion of Ratio, Proportion, Variation, and the Progressions, which in the former work were treated in an elementary manner; and we have here introduced theorems and examples which are unsuitable for a first course of reading. From this point the work covers ground for the most part new to the student, and enters upon subjects of special importance: these we have endeavoured to treat minutely and thoroughly, discussing both bookwork and examples with that fulness which we have always found necessary in our experience as teachers. It has been our aim to discuss all the essential parts as completely as possible within the limits of a single volume, but in a few Of the later chapters it has been im possible to find room for more than an introductory sketch in all such cases our Object has been to map out a suitable first course of reading, referring the student to special treatises for fuller information. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Elementary Treatise on Algebra, in Theory and Practice: With Attempts to Simplify Some of the More Difficult Parts of That Science, Particularly the Solution of Cubic Equations and of the Higher Orders It may be here mentioned, that some of these works on algebra are mere copies of others, and in one instance a person of this city, though, to our credit be it spoken, not an American, having repub lished a European work, claimed the merit of it as his own, after having copied verbatim from another, and with so little judgment that the very errors of the press, in the London edition, appear glaringly, and without comment, in the work which this individual (who shall be nameless) claimed as exclusively his own. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ray's New Higher Algebra: Elements of Algebra, for Colleges, Schools, and Private Students It is both a demonstrative and a practical science - a system of truths and reasoning, from which is derived a collection of Rules that may be used in the solution of an endless variety of problems, not only interesting to the student, but many of which are of the highest possible utility in the arts of life. The object of the present treatise is to present an outline of this science in a brief, clear, and practical form. The aim throughout has been to demonstrate every principle, and to fur nish the student the means of understanding clearly the rationale of every process he is required to perform. No effort has been made to simplify subjects by omitting that which is difficult, but rather to present them in such a light as to render their acquisi tion within the reach of all who will take the pains to study. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elementary Algebra for the Use of Schools and Colleges As thus reconstructed, the book constitutes a rounded course in what may be called the newer elementary alge bra, and includes all the subjects prescribed for admission to American Colleges and Schools of Technology. It will prove especially helpful to students preparing for such colleges as are using Mr. Smith's Treatise on Algebra for advanced work. The most important sources that have been drawn upon in the preparation of the new chapters are Professor Chrystal's text-boole of Algebra and Mr. Smith's own larger book, the Treatise. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elementary Algebra The book further differs from its predecessors (1) in the attention given to negative quantities and to the formal laws of algebra, known as the Commutative, the Associa tive, the Distributive, and the Index laws. In presenting these laws the author has endeavored to be rigorous without sacrificing simplicity. (2) In the fuller development of factoring and in its more extensive application to the solu tion of equations. The method of solving quadratic equa tions has been based entirely on the principles of factoring. Certainly this method is more in harmony with the pro cesses of advanced algebra, and it is the author's experience that, even for the beginner, it is quite as simple as the method of completing the square.
