Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Treatise on Diseases Peculiar to Infants and Children Subjects to which we have given much time and thought are very likely to assume a quality of importance which might not otherwise attach to them in our estimation. After all due allow ance for such artificial color of importance, we think it may safely be affirmed, that no subject pertaining to civilized humanity is so difficult in its study and practice, or so important to hu manity's physical, personal welfare, as the study and practice of medicine and that of all the various specialties and subdivisions of this subject, none. Are SO difficult and important as the hygienic and medical management Of infants and children. This estimation has, to a considerable extent, been recog nized in the fact, that this class of studies and duties has obtained separate rank in the profession under the title of paedology. The importance of the subject is involved in the fact that a healthy, Vigorous infancy and childhood give the best guarantee for a happy and prosperous manhood and womanhood whilst a frail, delicate infancy and childhood offer little else to the future man or woman than pain, peril, and premature decay. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Diseases of Infants and Children A liberal amount of space is devoted to surgical atlee tions which may come under the notice of physicians in early stages and under the care of practitioners at all periods of their course. The knowledge of these diseases must be extensive enough to enable the practitioner to clearly understand the nature of the illness, to appreciate the best lines of treatment, and to recognise the conditions for which the aid of a surgeon should be invoked. Indeed, a year's experience as house surgeon is almost essential to the training of a physician. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. In the chapter on pulmonary phthisis the Author has endea vored to utilize recent views on the nature of the phthisical process; but as his aim has been primarily to make his little book clinically useful, he has limited himself to matters of direct practical significance, and has indulged little in considerations of a purely speculative kind. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Diseases of Infants and Children This volume has been written by teachers who feel thfi contact with students has made them fairly familiar with their Probably the first requirement at present is to brin medicine into as compact a form as is consistent with a thorough presentation of the subject. Our aim has been to accomplish this with pediatrics. To many, the diagnosis and treatment of diseases of infants and children are most perplexing. These difficulties can only be overcome by first sharply differentiating the anatomical and physiological peculiarities of the infant and child, and then consider ing their practical bearings. The student must be familiarized with all the more recent tests, as well as the older practical bedside experience, in the study of disease. He will then, by a systematic examination of the patient, be able to make a scientific diagnosis. He must also be taught to treat rationally and with a distinct purpose in mind. We have aimed to present the subject in this way, and thus to make the work as practical as possible. The physician needs such a description of disease as he will actually encounter at the bedside. Where pictures can serve as a type, we have used illustrations, most of which are original. Theory and pathology have only been considered in so far as may be necessary to an understanding of the diagnosis, course and treatment of disease. We have tried to take a middle course between the compendium, which is usually unsatisfactory, and a too exhaust ive work, which, by dwelling overmuch on theory and exceptions, tends to confuse the reader. Our thanks are due to our hospital assistants, Drs. Dennett and Albee, for their help during the progress of the work. While a book of this sort must be indebted to all the workers in pediatrics, whom we have freely consulted, our personal experience at the Infants' and Children's Wards of the New York post-graduate Hospital, and in private practice, has formed the essential basis of our description of the diseases and their treatment. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Diseases of Children: A Practical Treatise on Diagnosis and Treatment for the Use of Students and Practitioners of Medicine In this volume the author has attempted to present to practitioners and students of medicine a practical clinical treatise on diseases of infants and children. He has but briefly outlined the pathological findings and has avoided unnecessary etiological discussions in order that he might, in a compact volume, find more space in which to clearly outline the differential diagnosis and give in full the treatment of these diseases. The diseases of infancy and childhood differ very widely in their clinical manifestations and in the methods of their successful treatment from corresponding diseases in the aduAbout the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Homoeopathic Treatise on the Diseases of Children IN default of any other recommendation, this little work will possess that of being the only one upon the diseases of children which at present exists in Homoeopathy.* It has been composed from the voluminous files of Notes, collected, as well at Paris, as in the provinces, but more especially during the five summers that the author passed at Bagnoles de l'orne, in the capacity of resident physician at the baths of that place. The great number of absolutely new therapeutic indications which it contains, are consequently the fruit of experience. The preliminary remarks by which the author has thought it his duty to precede the practical part of his work, are addressed to serious readers, who have as yet no fixed opinion upon the fundamental principles of Hahne mann's doctrine - a knowledge of which it is their object to popularize. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Manual of the Diseases of Infants and Children This little book has been so cordially received that a fourth edition has been prepared with the idea of bringing it up to date. Numerous minor changes and additions have been made, and among these may be mentioned the insertion of an article on pellagra in children, the use of the soy bean, and some other methods in the section on infant feeding, a chapter on drug eruptions and a full account of the Binet-Simon test for the mentality of children. It has been the aim of the author to keep the book a small one so that the student may use it for rapid references in the wards or clinics, and it will also be found useful as a desk book for practising physicians. The references throughout the book will be found of great use when the student wishes more extended information than is given in the average text-book. For the most part these references are in readily accessible journals in the English language and the articles referred to contain, in most instances, extensive bibliographies.
