Book excerpt: I. Tins Treatise will attempt to give an account of the fundamental nature of the universe, including man and society. It will not strive to cover all the boundaries of knowledge or to present all that is known of any one matter; rather, it will assume that history has furnished the main story, and it will endeavor only to clear up certain parts and to emphasize certain outlines in a way to bring the main features to more perfect view. The primary conceptions of physical and mental science will be given chief consideration. And this will be done with the main purpose of demonstrating that they may now be reduced to a single system of formulated knowledge most serviceable, in common, for all the sciences and for ethics, sociology, and religion. This task presents great difficulties, even in the style of writ ing it demands. It must take all sorts of readers into different regions of science, and make them familiar with details in ways difficult to most persons, though they seem unnecessarily element ary and tedious to each particular specialist. On the other hand, it must entice each specialist to go outside of his chosen domain and to interest himself in the summarizing of all departments of knowledge, consistently with one another, in ways he has, perhaps, grown to regard as futile for his particular work. Again, it must persuade the religious enthusiast that the path to be pursued is that in which his ardor may be most devoutly directed. From the outset, therefore, the author begs of all parties a serious patience worthy of the problem and of its fruits.

A large section of the book gives a detailed exposition of Solar Fire, the Fire of Mind, since this is the dominant energy to be understood and controlled during this second solar system. Again, it must persuade the religious enthusiast that the path to be pursued is that in which his ardor may be most devoutly directed. From the outset, therefore, the author begs of all parties a serious patience worthy Of the problem and of its fruits. Such a work demands an introductory outline of the fields to be covered, of their present aspect, and Of the reasons requiring the reconsideration of them here proposed. N O philosophic thought is more hackneyed than that the uni verse is one and indivisible. As yet, however, it is a mere faith. NO system has yet gathered all the Spheres of learning under it in actual detail. On the contrary, the most striking feature Of the present map of the world's wisdom is that it still displays the two chief bodies of human knowledge in Open dis junction; in as distant and inhospitable relations as were the Eastern and Western Continents before the voyage of Columbus. I refer to the intellectual hemispheres of mental and of physical science. Some of the main hypotheses, upon which the business Of each now proceeds, are notoriously contradicted by the most substantial conclusions of the other. For example, the entire bulk of the physical sciences is conducted on the assumption that its world is spatial in ways that make that word inapplicable to the human mind; 1 while at the same time there is little like lihood, now, of finding a competent psychologist who does not incline to the belief that matter and mind are ultimately of one sort. Nor are there lacking other examples equally striking and more pertinent to the world's welfare and daily life. It is to these confusing and harmful antagonisms, constituting the classic strife between philosophy and science, idealism and realism, spirit and matter, since the beginning Of history, that this Treatise will bring peace. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ancient Near Eastern mode of thought is not at all intuitive to us moderns, but our understanding of ancient perspectives can only approach accuracy when we begin to penetrate ancient texts on their own terms rather than imposing our own world view. In this task, we are aided by the ever-growing corpus of literature that is being recovered and analyzed. After an introduction that presents some of the history of comparative studies and how it has been applied to the study of ancient texts in general and cosmology in particular, Walton focuses in the first half of this book on the ancient Near Eastern texts that inform our understanding about ancient ways of thinking about cosmology. Of primary interest are the texts that can help us discern the parameters of ancient perspectives on cosmic ontology—that is, how the writers perceived origins. Texts from across the ancient Near East are presented, including primarily Egyptian, Sumerian, and Akkadian texts, but occasionally also Ugaritic and Hittite, as appropriate. Walton’s intention, first of all, is to understand the texts but also to demonstrate that a functional ontology pervaded the cognitive environment of the ancient Near East. This functional ontology involves more than just the idea that ordering the cosmos was the focus of the cosmological texts. He posits that, in the ancient world, bringing about order and functionality was the very essence of creative activity. He also pays close attention to the ancient ideology of temples to show the close connection between temples and the functioning cosmos. The second half of the book is devoted to a fresh analysis of Genesis 1:1–2:4. Walton offers studies of significant Hebrew terms and seeks to show that the Israelite texts evidence a functional ontology and a cosmology that is constructed with temple ideology in mind, as in the rest of the ancient Near East. He contends that Genesis 1 never was an account of material origins but that, as in the rest of the ancient world, the focus of “creation texts” was to order the cosmos by initiating functions for the components of the cosmos. He further contends that the cosmology of Genesis 1 is founded on the premise that the cosmos should be understood in temple terms. All of this is intended to demonstrate that, when we read Genesis 1 as the ancient document it is, rather than trying to read it in light of our own world view, the text comes to life in ways that help recover the energy it had in its original context. At the same time, it provides a new perspective on Genesis 1 in relation to what have long been controversial issues. Far from being a borrowed text, Genesis 1 offers a unique theology, even while it speaks from the platform of its contemporaneous cognitive environment.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Almagesti minor is one of the most important works of medieval astronomy. The Almagesti minor, probably written in northern France circa 1200, is a Latin summary of the first six books of Ptolemy's astronomical masterpiece, the Almagest. Also known to modern scholars as the Almagestum parvum, the Almagesti minor provides a clear example of how a medieval scholar understood Ptolemy's authoritative writing on cosmology, spherical astronomy, solar theory, lunar theory, and eclipses. The author incorporated the findings of astronomers of the Islamic world, such as al-Battāanīi, into the framework of Ptolemaic astronomy, and he altered the format and style of Ptolemy's astronomy in order to make it accord with the author's ideals of a mathematical science, which were primarily derived from Euclid's Elements. The Almagesti minor had a profound effect upon astronomical writing throughout the 13th-15th centuries, including the work of Georg Peurbach and Johannes Regiomontanus. In this first volume of the Ptolemaeus Arabus et Latinus series, Henry Zepeda offers not only a critical edition of this little-studied text, but also a translation of it into English, analysis of both the text and its geometrical figures, and a thorough study of the work's origins, sources, and long-lasting influence.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Cosmology, an Introduction to the Philosophy of Matter, Vol. 1: The Greeks and the Aristotelian Schoolmen The present volume is an attempt to prepare the ground for a convincing exposition of the strong points of Scholastic Cosmology. The main difference between it and most con temporary treatises on the same topic is a more generous usage of the historic method in the treatment of metaphysical problems: a revival, as the Introduction points out, of the precept and practice of Aristotle and St. Thomas.
