Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Treatise on Cosmology, Vol. 1 The primary conceptions of physical and mental science will be given chief consideration. And this will be done with the main purpose of demonstrating that they may now be reduced to a single system of formulated knowledge most serviceable, in common, for all the sciences and for ethics, sociology, and religion. This task presents great difficulties, even in the style of writ ing it demands. It must take all sorts Of readers into different regions of science, and make them familiar with details in ways difficult to most persons, though they seem unnecessarily element ary and tedious to each particular specialist. On the other hand, it must entice each specialist to go outside of his chosen domain and to interest himself in the summarizing of all departments Of knowledge, consistently with one another, in ways he has, perhaps, grown to regard as futile for his particular work. Again, it must persuade the religious enthusiast that the path to be pursued is that in which his ardor may be most devoutly directed. From the outset, therefore, the author begs of all parties a serious patience worthy Of the problem and of its fruits. Such a work demands an introductory outline of the fields to be covered, of their present aspect, and Of the reasons requiring the reconsideration of them here proposed. N O philosophic thought is more hackneyed than that the uni verse is one and indivisible. As yet, however, it is a mere faith. NO system has yet gathered all the Spheres of learning under it in actual detail. On the contrary, the most striking feature Of the present map of the world's wisdom is that it still displays the two chief bodies of human knowledge in Open dis junction; in as distant and inhospitable relations as were the Eastern and Western Continents before the voyage of Columbus. I refer to the intellectual hemispheres of mental and of physical science. Some of the main hypotheses, upon which the business Of each now proceeds, are notoriously contradicted by the most substantial conclusions of the other. For example, the entire bulk of the physical sciences is conducted on the assumption that its world is spatial in ways that make that word inapplicable to the human mind; 1 while at the same time there is little like lihood, now, of finding a competent psychologist who does not incline to the belief that matter and mind are ultimately of one sort. Nor are there lacking other examples equally striking and more pertinent to the world's welfare and daily life. It is to these confusing and harmful antagonisms, constituting the classic strife between philosophy and science, idealism and realism, spirit and matter, since the beginning Of history, that this Treatise will bring peace. Tins Treatise will attempt to give an account of the fundamental nature of the universe, including man and society. It will not strive to cover all the boundaries of knowledge or to present all that is known of any one matter; rather, it will assume that history has furnished the main story, and it will endeavor only to clear up certain parts and to emphasize certain outlines in a way to bring the main features to more perfect view. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Cosmology, an Introduction to the Philosophy of Matter, Vol. 1: The Greeks and the Aristotelian Schoolmen The present volume is an attempt to prepare the ground for a convincing exposition of the strong points of Scholastic Cosmology. The main difference between it and most con temporary treatises on the same topic is a more generous usage of the historic method in the treatment of metaphysical problems: a revival, as the Introduction points out, of the precept and practice of Aristotle and St. Thomas. In these legends are stored the combined wisdom and speculations of their wise men, their ancients, their prophets, and their soothsayers. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Worlds in the Making, the Evolution of the Universe, Vol. 1 The explanations which I tentatively Offered could, Of course, not claim to stand in all their detail; yet the scientific world received them with unusual interest and benevolence. Thus encouraged, I tried to solve more of the numerous important problems, and in the present volume I have added some further sections to the com plex Of explanatory arguments concerning the evolution of the Universe. The foundation to these explanations was laid in a memoir which I presented to the Academy of Sciences at Stockholm in 1900. The memoir was soon afterwards printed in the Physikalische Zeitschrift, and the subject was further developed in my Treatise of Cosmic Physics. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Outlines of Cosmic Philosophy, Vol. 1 of 4: Based on the Doctrine of Evolution, With Criticisms on the Positive Philosophy The phrase Cosmic Philosophy, 1 by which I have proposed to designate this system, has not found favour with Mr. Spencer, who urges the objection that all philosophies whatever may, in a certain sense, be termed Cosmic, inas much as all philosophies have had for their subject 'matter the explanation of the universe or Cosmos. In this objection there would no doubt be much weight if any alternative term could be proposed which should be ideally per fect. As it: is, I cannot but think that the al ternative term suggested by Mr. Spencer is open to a parallel objection of at least equal weight. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Rational Cosmology, or the Eternal Principles and the Necessary Laws of the Universe There must somewhere be a position from whence it may clearly be seen, that the universe has laws which are necessarily determined by immutable and eternal principles. Nothing in nature, and equally so not na ture itself, can be made intelligible except as it has been subjected to rational principle, and such principle must both have been, and been made controlling, in the very origination Of nature, or nature must forever be with out meaning 'or end. That principle, then, to an all perfect insight, must disclose within itself what the facts must be, and no induction Of facts can at all be needed by the absolute reason.
