Book Synopsis Infant Baptism God's Ordinance by : Michael Harrison

Download or read book Infant Baptism God's Ordinance written by Michael Harrison and published by Puritan Publications. This book was released on 2016-05-30 with total page 86 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Is this just another book on infant baptism? No. It is possibly the best succinct, yet comprehensive work on the subject ever written by a puritan. It was originally a longer series of sermons that Harrison preached to his congregation, many of whom were Baptist at the time. At their request, he placed his thoughts into a concise treatise that covers all the main points needful in understanding the biblical position of infant inclusion in the Covenant of Grace, and infant baptism. Harrison’s work is so acute in its biblical presentation of the truth of Scripture that the reader cannot be but left in awe of his masterful exactitude to God’s mind on the issue of infant inclusion in the Covenant of Grace, and the application of the sign of the covenant to every visible member in the church. He gives the reader an introductory lesson on the Covenant of Grace and those parties involved by way of its membership, and then proceeds to teach the reader why infants are to be baptized. Harrison deals hermeneutically with 9 biblical arguments on the issue; two of which are his most important foundational chapters setting the stage for the rest of the book. He also shows the danger of shutting infants out of the kingdom of heaven, and answers all the main objections to Antipaedobaptist theology on the issue. He ends the work with a chapter on the right mode in which baptism should take place, along with a chapter on applying the truths of the study to the life of the members of the covenant community. Without sounding clichéd, this work is among the top works ever written on the subject, and in my estimation is irrefutable. The unbiased reader will have no issues with Harrison’s biblical exposition and logic driven inference. It is a powerhouse puritan work that every Paedobaptist ought to read for support, and every Antipaedobaptist ought to read to untangle their dispensational theology. Harrison says that Antipaedobaptism is “to be justly abhorred as false doctrine,” and proves this to the reader beyond a reasonable doubt. This is not a scan or facsimile, has been updated in modern English for easy reading and has an active table of contents for electronic versions.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Treatise on Infant Baptism: Shewing the Scriptural Grounds and Historical Evidence of That Ordinance This shews us the great necessity there is, that all the friends ofthe Church, should endeavour as much as in them lieth to preserve inviolate her admirable ritual and rubrics. For the slight est deviation, ia any particular, more especially in the subject matter of the following Treatise, may be attended with the most serious couse quences. The opinions ofthe world we know are Changeable but the word of God remaineth for ever. The book of Common Prayer, which in its language and doctrines has been in accordance with Scripture, three hundred years ago, is still in accordance with it. The charac ter of this coincidence and agreement cannot be changed: it will remain the same as long as truth and religion will continue in the World. Be assured therefore that every deviation from the directions of our incomparable Liturgy, re garding the administration of the Christian Sa craments, must inevitably be considered as a wilful neglect of wise and holy counsels. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Validity of Baptism by Sprinkling, and the Right of Infants to That Ordinance: Supported and Defended in Two Discourses, Delivered at Malden, in the Beginning of the Year 1804, Occasioned by the Setting Up of a Baptist Society in That Place B 3. Be baptized into the name of another, de notes our'itaking that other person, for our master, and our standing. In the relation of scholars or disciples to him. This we learn from that query to the Corinthians, were ye baptized into the name of Paul 9 They were called John's disciples, whom John had bap tized and when the same persons after wards became the disciples of Christ, they were again baptized in the naine of Christ, or, (if the Father, andof the Son, and of the Ho ly Ghost, thereby professing their subjection to that religion which-god revealed by his Son, and confirmed by his Spirit. So long as this baptismal form of words be repeated, with the washing of water by the regularly authorized ministers of the gospel, and the whole ceremony is conducted with decen cy, ' piety and devotion we may safely conclude that whatever is essential to the institution, is duly observed. Book excerpt: The 18th century was a wealth of knowledge, exploration and rapidly growing technology and expanding record-keeping made possible by advances in the printing press. In its determination to preserve the century of revolution, Gale initiated a revolution of its own: digitization of epic proportions to preserve these invaluable works in the largest archive of its kind. Now for the first time these high-quality digital copies of original 18th century manuscripts are available in print, making them highly accessible to libraries, undergraduate students, and independent scholars. The Age of Enlightenment profoundly enriched religious and philosophical understanding and continues to influence present-day thinking. Works collected here include masterpieces by David Hume, Immanuel Kant, and Jean-Jacques Rousseau, as well as religious sermons and moral debates on the issues of the day, such as the slave trade. The Age of Reason saw conflict between Protestantism and Catholicism transformed into one between faith and logic -- a debate that continues in the twenty-first century. ++++ The below data was compiled from various identification fields in the bibliographic record of this title.
