Book excerpt: An excerpt from Part V. Chapter III. "The Conductor in Performance." - The conductor will do well to look over his music, or at least the more important numbers thereof, immediately before a performance. The conductor should face his forces with a smiling countenance. Should he be nervous or anxious, he must not betray his feelings, or the performers will become troubled and fearful. At all points of possible danger, such as difficult entries, etc., the conductor should watch his forces to see that they are ready before the moment for attack arrives. Neither choralists, orchestra players, nor soloists can be depended upon to be always ready. The conductor stands between the composer and the listener as an interpreter. Upon him rests the responsibility for securing an adequate interpretation of the composition. He is therefore of necessity clothed with equally comprehensive authority. Soloists as well as chorus singers and orchestral players are properly under his direction. If a singer be incompetent, he will refuse to conduct for such. If a singer be competent and experienced, the conductor will not try to impose his will upon the artist as to matters of style in delivery concerning which persons of taste may differ, but will furnish a discreet, sympathetic accompaniment which shall do justice to the vocal, as well as to the instrumental part of a composition. If, however, the soloist should for any reason indulge in a delivery which would tend to rob the music of its legitimate effect, it is the conductor's duty to protest. The soloist has his rights; he must be given a large measure of liberty in the performance of his part, for he, as well as the conductor, has a responsibility, and will be judged by his work. To the conductor, however, belongs the wider and superior responsibility and authority.

Book excerpt: In the film "De-Lovely," Cole Porter admonishes the chorus of "Kiss Me Kate" to snap out their consonants. This book is not only about consonants, but also about vowels, breathing, round sounds and head tones--just a few of the many techniques discussed that will improve your singing in a choir or chorus or any group. It is written with the amateur in mind, but it is just as valuable for the professional. A brief history of choral singing from prehistory to the 21st Century is included. GERALD G. HOTCHKISS has sung in Christian and Jewish choirs, choruses, in octets, quartets, duets, barbershop, madrigals and Broadway reviews under many of the finest conductors in the United States as an amateur for more than sixty years.

Book excerpt: “In this one-of-a-kind celebration of singing with others, I’d call her pitch nearly perfect.”—The Atlantic For Stacy Horn, regardless of what is going on in the world or her life, singing in an amateur choir—the Choral Society of Grace Church in New York—never fails to take her to a place where hope reigns and everything good is possible. She’s not particularly religious, and her voice is not exceptional (so she says), but like the 32.5 million other chorus members throughout this country, singing makes her happy. Horn brings us along as she sings some of the greatest music humanity has ever produced, delves into the dramatic stories of conductors and composers, unearths the fascinating history of group singing, and explores remarkable discoveries from the new science of singing, including all the unexpected health benefits. Imperfect Harmony is the story of one woman who has found joy and strength in the weekly ritual of singing and in the irresistible power of song.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the popularity of television shows such as Glee, American Idol, and The Voice, show choirs have become a vibrant component of college and high school music programs. Music teachers must not only know how to teach choral singing for popular music, but also be versed in show design and production. In The Show Choir Handbook, Alan L. Alder and Thalia M. Mulvihill address both song technique and show presentation, giving show choir directors the full set of tools they need for successful performances. The Show Choir Handbook is a resource for current and future music educators who administer show choirs. With most literature on the topic either out of date or focused on the teaching techniques limited to vocal jazz (drawing on the choral genre’s origins as “swing choirs”), instructors are in dire need of a resource that addresses music produced by publishers and choral arrangers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What role does contemporary choral activity play in the construction of social and musical meaning? How can historical knowledge and analysis shed light on contemporary choral problems and possibilities? And how can choral research promote the development and expansion of new music today? Questions like these are addressed in this anthology from a wide range of disciplines and perspectives. The book comprises a selection of papers presented at the International Conference on the Concepts and Practices of Choral Singing in Lund, Sweden, in October 2012. The aim of the conference was to highlight the contemporary dynamic developments in choral research, and to explore interdisciplinary investigations and interaction between practice-based and historical approaches. The conference was also the fourth meeting of the network “Choir in Focus”, which was initiated in 2009 at Southern Choral Centre (Körcentrum Syd), a joint venture between Malmö Academy of Music, the Department of Musicology, Odeum (all at Lund University), Malmö Symphony Orchestra and Music South (Musik i Syd), Sweden. The continuous ambition of the network has been to provide a forum for co-operation across national and disciplinary borders and to encourage debates around the musical and social function of choirs in modern society as mirroring collective and individual needs for meaning, music-making and well-being. In the introductory chapter, the editors describe choral practice as a field of simultaneous (re)presentation, (re)production and (re)creation, and suggest that these three aspects may be seen as umbrella themes for the fifteen chapters of the anthology. The authors come from Sweden, Norway, Finland, Estonia, Germany, United Kingdom, Portugal and Belgium, and explore choral practice from differing theoretical and methodological starting points. Together, they contribute to a transdisciplinary discussion about the origins, functions and meanings of choral singing.
