Download or read book Early Modern Northern English Lexis written by Javier Ruano-García and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2010 with total page 628 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The history of regional 'Englishes' in the Early Modern period still presents numerous lacunae that need to be filled, in order to provide a complete insight into the English linguistic setting at this time. This book aims to remedy these deficiencies in some measure. In particular, this monograph seeks to shed light upon the history of Early Modern Northern English vocabulary by means of the first corpus of Early Modern texts where Northern linguistic traits are used for literary purposes. It provides a linguistically documented description of Northern words from a synchronic standpoint, dealing with their distribution, etymology, as well as with some of their morphological and semantic characteristics. In addition, this study offers a discussion of the Early Modern literary representations of Northern speech. A thorough revision of the treatment that Northern lexical items are given in contemporary and modern lexicographic sources is also presented, together with a glossary that outlines the diachronic profile of the terms gathered.

Book Synopsis Early Modern English Lexicography by : Jürgen Schäfer
Download or read book Early Modern English Lexicography written by Jürgen Schäfer and published by . This book was released on 1989 with total page 508 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Early Modern English Lexicography presents for the first time a census of printed monolingual glossaries and dictionaries published from 1475 to 1640, together with a systematic bibliographical description of these works. The lemmatical material is listed alphabetically and documented according to the criteria of the Oxford English Dictionary. A second volume compiles additions and corrections to the Oxford English Dictionary documentation never before published, and discusses in detail lexicographical aspects pertinent to assembling this material. More than 5,000 main entries comprise neologisms, antedatings, post-datings, unregistered senses, additional citations, and corrections. Special attention is devoted to the question of lexical transmission through sources often overlooked in the Oxford English Dictionary. The volumes have been conceived as a specialized preliminary study of the growth and development of English lexicography in the Early Modern English period.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Inequality in Education: Comparative and International Perspectives is a compilation of conceptual chapters and national case studies that includes a series of methods for measuring education inequalities. The book provides up-to-date scholarly research on global trends in the distribution of formal schooling in national populations. It also offers a strategic comparative and international education policy statement on recent shifts in education inequality, and new approaches to explore, develop and improve comparative education and policy research globally. Contributing authors examine how education as a process interacts with government finance policy to form patterns of access to education services. In addition to case perspectives from 18 countries across six geographic regions, the volume includes six conceptual chapters on topics that influence education inequality, such as gender, disability, language and economics, and a summary chapter that presents new evidence on the pernicious consequences of inequality in the distribution of education. The book offers (1) a better and more holistic understanding of ways to measure education inequalities; and (2) strategies for facing the challenge of inequality in education in the processes of policy formation, planning and implementation at the local, regional, national and global levels.

Download or read book Duncan Phyfe written by Peter M. Kenny and published by Metropolitan Museum of Art. This book was released on 2011 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Duncan Phyfe (1770-1854), known during his lifetime as the "United States Rage," to this day remains America's best-known cabinetmaker. Establishing his reputation as a purveyor of luxury by designing high-quality furniture for New York's moneyed elite, Phyfe would come to count among his clients some of the nation's wealthiest and most storied families. This richly illustrated volume covers the full chronological sweep of the craftsman's distinguished career, from his earliest furniture-- which bears the influence of his 18th-century British predecessors Thomas Sheraton and Thomas Hope--to his late simplified designs in the Grecian Plain. More than sixty works by Phyfe and his workshop are highlighted, including rarely seen pieces from private collections and several newly discovered documented works. Additionally, essays by leading scholars bring to light new information on Phyfe's life, his workshop production, and his roster of illustrious patrons. What unfolds is the story of Phyfe's remarkable transformation from a young immigrant craftsman to an accomplished master cabinetmaker and an American icon."--Publisher's website.
