Book excerpt: This handbook, like others in this series, concentrates on exegetical matters that are of prime importance for translators, and it attempts to indicate possible solutions for translational problems that may arise because of language or culture. In this respect the Handbook attempts to deal with the full range of information important to translators. However, the authors do not attempt to provide help that other theologians and scholars may be seeking but which is not directly useful for the task of translating. It is assumed that such information is available elsewhere.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bible scholar, John Howard Reid, has breathed new life into the gospel of Luke in this totally new and often extremely startling translation, based on the best available, early Greek texts. Reid has expertly employed the latest discoveries regarding the real meanings behind many of Luke's words. Unlike most other translators, Reid has NOT approached the Gospel with any particular religious beliefs in mind. Indeed, he has taken great care not to twist Luke's words to make them conform to notions entertained by any particular church body or religion. Best of all, he has made Luke's words plain as day and remarkably easy to comprehend. Here is a translation inspired by the very same Holy Spirit who lent Her guidance to Doctor Luke, Paul's beloved assistant and Disciple. {The word, "spirit", is feminine in Greek, although this does not necesarily indicate Her gender).

Book excerpt: In this book, the author aims to explore the impact of 19th-century translations of the Bible into indigenous languages, with a specific focus on the Setswana translation. The translations have had a profound effect on the religio-cultural practices of the indigenous people, leading to erosion and alteration of their traditions and identities. I argue that it is crucial to consider the translator's intentions and the associated literature, such as journals and letters, to understand the translation process comprehensively. The Setswana Bible was the first to be translated in Africa, and tracing the intentions of Robert Moffat, the first translator, is imperative to understanding the impact of the translation on the receptor culture. The methodology adopted is interdisciplinary, drawing from linguistics, African languages, history, English literature, cultural studies, black studies and theology. I analyse the impact of the 1840 Gospel of Luke in the context of Setswana culture in South Africa, and my findings demonstrate that translations cannot be distinct from the translator. To gain a deep understanding of the implications of such texts, I adopt a methodology that analyses significant historical literature and primary sources, including the records and works of The British and Foreign Bible Society, The History of the London Missionary Society, and the journals, letters and writings of missionaries such as Robert Moffat and John Campbell.

The Simple truth is that the Greek appeals to me more power fully than any translation. The purpose Of. This translation Of Luke's Gospel is to preserve, as far as practicable, the delicate nuances Of the Greek idiom. It is supplied with grammatical notes at the end for the benefit of those who Wish to know the reason for any particular rendering. The book can thus be used as a textbook by those who possess the Greek text or the translation can be used alone by those who Wish to do so. The quotations from the Old Testament are given in italics and the book is printed like modern English. Even in the English the charm of the most beautiful book in the world is manifest. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this unique account of 60 years of Bible translation, Eugene Nida sets out his journey with a personal touch. On the way, he reveals the importance of a solid knowledge of Greek and Hebrew as well as of the historical settings in which the Bible was created, in order to render effective translations. Through his story we get to know Nida's views on translations through the ages, in different cultures and narrative traditions, right through to the 21st Century. This book is in the first place a study in anthropological linguistics that tells the rich history of Bible translation, the Bible Societies, translator training, and cultural translation problems. Eugene A. Nida (1914) went to UCLA (Phi Beta Kappa, 1936) and the University of Southern California (Helenistic Greek, 1939). He taught at the Summer Institute of Linguistics from 1937-1952 and is past president of the Linguistic Society of America (1968). From 1943-1981 he was language consultant for the American Bible Society and the United Bible Societies which led him to study many cultures across 96 countries and to lecture in over a hundred universities and colleges to this day. His published works include Bible Translating (1946), Customs and Cultures (1954), Toward a Science of Translating (1964), Religion across Cultures (1968), The Sociolinguistics of Intercultural Communication (1996) and Translation in Context (2002).
