Book excerpt: A transformation is developed, based upon the scale dependence of turbulent diffusion, that relates temporal and spatial spectra of turbulent kinetic energy. The basic idea is that an eddy diffusivity is appropriate when scales of the flow smaller than a length e and a time tare unresolved. An expression similar to Heisenberg's for eddy diffusivity is used to obtain the connection between e and t necessary to transform temporal spectra into spatial spectra. This transformation reveals a close connection between Webster's Site D spectrum of turbulent kinetic energy in the ocean and Okubo's diagrams of oceanic mixing. Furthermore, all spectra obtained from dimensional arguments satisfy this transformation.

Book Synopsis Water-Quality Engineering in Natural Systems by : David A. Chin
Download or read book Water-Quality Engineering in Natural Systems written by David A. Chin and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2021-04-20 with total page 656 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This textbook describes in detail the fundamental equations that govern the fate and transport of contaminants in the environment, and covers the application of these equations to engineering design and environmental impact analysis relating to contaminant discharges into rivers, lakes, wetlands, groundwater, and oceans. The third edition provides numerous end-of-chapter problems and an expanded solutions manual. Also introduced in this edition are PowerPoints slides for all chapters so that instructors have a ready-made course. Key distinguishing features of this book include: detailed coverage of the science behind water-quality regulations, state-of-the-art methods for calculating total maximum daily loads (TMDLs) for the remediation of impaired waters, modeling and control of nutrient levels in lakes and reservoirs, design of constructed treatment wetlands, design of groundwater remediation systems, design of ocean outfalls, control of oil spills in the ocean, and the design of systems to control the quality of surface runoff from watersheds into their receiving waters. In addition, the entire book is updated to provide the latest advances in the field of water-quality control. For example, concepts such as mixing zones are expanded to include physical nature and regulatory importance of mixing zones, practical aspects of outfall and diffuser design are also included, specific details of water-quality modeling are updated to reflect the latest developments on this topic, and new findings relating to priority and emerging pollutants are added.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Given their tremendous success in commercial applications, machine learning (ML) models are increasingly being considered as alternatives to science-based models in many disciplines. Yet, these "black-box" ML models have found limited success due to their inability to work well in the presence of limited training data and generalize to unseen scenarios. As a result, there is a growing interest in the scientific community on creating a new generation of methods that integrate scientific knowledge in ML frameworks. This emerging field, called scientific knowledge-guided ML (KGML), seeks a distinct departure from existing "data-only" or "scientific knowledge-only" methods to use knowledge and data at an equal footing. Indeed, KGML involves diverse scientific and ML communities, where researchers and practitioners from various backgrounds and application domains are continually adding richness to the problem formulations and research methods in this emerging field. Knowledge Guided Machine Learning: Accelerating Discovery using Scientific Knowledge and Data provides an introduction to this rapidly growing field by discussing some of the common themes of research in KGML using illustrative examples, case studies, and reviews from diverse application domains and research communities as book chapters by leading researchers. KEY FEATURES First-of-its-kind book in an emerging area of research that is gaining widespread attention in the scientific and data science fields Accessible to a broad audience in data science and scientific and engineering fields Provides a coherent organizational structure to the problem formulations and research methods in the emerging field of KGML using illustrative examples from diverse application domains Contains chapters by leading researchers, which illustrate the cutting-edge research trends, opportunities, and challenges in KGML research from multiple perspectives Enables cross-pollination of KGML problem formulations and research methods across disciplines Highlights critical gaps that require further investigation by the broader community of researchers and practitioners to realize the full potential of KGML
