Book excerpt: Excerpt from Notes of Travel: Being a Journal of a Tour in Europe In common, perhaps, with the majority of persons inhabiting this Western Continent, did I entertain, at an early period of my life, a strong desire to visit the great Eastern World - the land of my forefathers, and the source of all our institutions, civil and religious; except that one, that greatest of all institutions, the institution of Liberty and self-government. Nor is it at all singular, that by commencing the study of a profession, whose annals are so richly stored by the labours of its eminent European members, whose practical utility has been so much enhanced by observations conducted in those immense and well regulated European hospitals, this desire should be increased. Bound, however, by the force of circumstances, after entering upon the active duties of my arduous calling, I had almost relinquished every idea of having my wish gratified, when by misfortunes incident to human life, operating on a constitution already enfeebled, it became necessary for a while to intermit my labours. This appeared to me a favourable season, not only for gratifying a long entertained desire, and benefiting my health, but also for comparing the practice of my profession in my own country, with that of foreign lands; and thus rendering myself more useful to my fellow-citizens, whose confidence I have had the honor so extensively to enjoy. With this motive, and these views, then, I left my home and ray friends, on the 16th of April, 1841, to complete my arrangements in the cities of Philadelphia and New York, previously to my embarcation.
