Book excerpt: Excerpt from Finding the Worth-While in Europe For this reason I have little to say of the great cities which I have found very much like each other and like our own, but I do aim to show the way to some of those places in every land to see which will surely make of the trip a pleasant memory. Many of these are included in every well planned European tour, but some are not, and take my word for it and be not afraid to turn aside sometimes from the beaten track, for in the odd corners of the earth are often found its greatest beauties. Horace Greeley requires revision. As America now stands, I believe by far the most valuable education a young man can Obtain is a European trip, undertaken during the years most Often devoted to a college course. It costs no more; it may even cost less; and I make bold to say it is immeasurably more educative. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Art Tour to Northern Capitals of Europe MY book pretends to be nothing more nor less than its title indicates. It is expressly the record of an Art Tour; it does not profess to give descriptions of scenery, or to deal with matters of science. I have endeavoured to put into as concise and at; tractive a form as possible all the information I could gather during a journey taken in the summer of 1870, for the purpose of collecting whatever art materials might be scattered over the Northern Capitals of Europe. The territory, though not unexplored, had scarcely become beaten ground. I may say that the route was new and informing to myself, for though familiar with the chief galleries and museums of Europe, I had still to make acquaintance with the art treasures of Copen hagen, Stockholm, St. Petersburg, and Moscow. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Notes of Travel: Being a Journal of a Tour in Europe In common, perhaps, with the majority of persons inhabiting this Western Continent, did I entertain, at an early period of my life, a strong desire to visit the great Eastern World - the land of my forefathers, and the source of all our institutions, civil and religious; except that one, that greatest of all institutions, the institution of Liberty and self-government. Nor is it at all singular, that by commencing the study of a profession, whose annals are so richly stored by the labours of its eminent European members, whose practical utility has been so much enhanced by observations conducted in those immense and well regulated European hospitals, this desire should be increased. Bound, however, by the force of circumstances, after entering upon the active duties of my arduous calling, I had almost relinquished every idea of having my wish gratified, when by misfortunes incident to human life, operating on a constitution already enfeebled, it became necessary for a while to intermit my labours. This appeared to me a favourable season, not only for gratifying a long entertained desire, and benefiting my health, but also for comparing the practice of my profession in my own country, with that of foreign lands; and thus rendering myself more useful to my fellow-citizens, whose confidence I have had the honor so extensively to enjoy. With this motive, and these views, then, I left my home and ray friends, on the 16th of April, 1841, to complete my arrangements in the cities of Philadelphia and New York, previously to my embarcation. As the places and objects I visited on my tour, have been again and again described, and by very many far abler pens than my own, and as I have not the least ambition to aspire to authorship, I shall give a simple narrative of my wanderings, in the journal form, in the order in which the objects were viewed, and the impressions made from day to day; pruning redundancies, or adding explanatory details, as occasion may require. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Family Motor Tour Through Europe I am afraid I owe it to nothing but my inborn stubbornness that I did not drop then and there the vexing sport of automobiling. But I perse vered, and by the time I had improved the sparking plugs and the driving gear and was able to make the thing run in what I then thought a tolerable fashion, I found a better car, a steam buggy this time. It looked so easy to handle, so silent, so well behaved at first, that it took me several days to find out that matters were not by any means so perfect as they seemed to be at the demonstration, on the success of which I had placed mv order. Burnt-out boilers, crushed bearings, uncalled-for fireworks from the gasoline tank and other similar peace-disturbing happenings made me return again to the type of internal combustion car, which had become much improved in the meantime. He is not without hope that persons who have journeyed over the same route may find some pleasant reminders in his work; and that those who contemplate a similar trip may con sider it a useful adjunct to the guide-book; and that others, who would rather read books of travel than make a tour themselves, may be interested in its perusal. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Afterglow of European Travel Sitting here in the seclusion of my own home library, and taking a retrospective view of that, to us, memorable tour from New York to Pompeii, I do not know as I can recall any land which afforded me more unqualified enjoy ment than that of which Edinburgh is the capital. A com bination of circumstances combined to produce this result. It was the first earth we trod after a dreary, rainy voyage. It was a land rich in legend, history, and song, interwoven with my earliest thought of the Old World. It was the birthplace of men whose names were household words from childhood. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Complete Pocket-Guide Europe This book has been for many years beforeths pub lic, and is thoroughly tested by increasing use among travellers through the portions of Europe gen orally covered in a single tour. It resulted from Ob servation of the trials undergone by those equipped with the larger and more cumbrous handbooks We devised the Pocket Guide because such a work was sorely needed, and no one else undertook this practi cal service. The ends desired were: 1. Fuller and better arranged details of Routes Points of Interest, Fares, Hotels, Currency, etc than are given in many books of greater proportions. 2. Legible type and good maps. 3. A. Real Pocket Guide, so come pact as to be carried in a man's coat or hip pocket, or in a woman's dress-pocket or mufi. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Notices on the Northern Capitals of Europe I was desirous of seeing something of the state of Art in the North of Europe, and undertook a journey to search its Capitals. I had already visited Holland, but have added a relation of what pictures and objects I most admired there in my present tour. Others who travel in the same route, and who shall have honoured my work with a perusal, may perhaps differ in their choice and judgment. I do not pretend to lay down any law for admiration; taste for statues, temples, and paintings, is like that for women - black, brown.
