Testing and Diagnosis is an important topic and fulfills a vital need for the electronic industry. The testing and diagnosis of digital electronic circuits has been successfuIly developed to the point that it can be automated. Unfortu nately, its development for analog electronic circuits is still in its Stone Age. The engineer's intuition is still the most powerful tool used in the industry! There are two reasons for this. One is that there has been no pressing need from the industry. Analog circuits are usuaIly small in size. Sometimes, the engineer's experience and intuition are sufficient to fulfill the need. The other reason is that there are no breakthrough results from academic re search to provide the industry with critical ideas to develop tools. This is not because of a lack of effort. Both academic and industrial research groups have made major efforts to look into this problem. Unfortunately, the prob lem for analog circuits is fundamentally different from and much more diffi cult than its counterpart for digital circuits. These efforts have led to some important findings, but are still not at the point of being practicaIly useful. However, these situations are now changing. The current trend for the design of VLSI chips is to use analog/digital hybrid circuits, instead of digital circuits from the past. Book excerpt: A new approach for fault location in an analog fault dictionary has been adopted on the basis of quantizing circuit responses. The possibility of quantization is offered by faults having nearly the same effect on some test measurements. This produces multivalued logic responses which can be manipulated logically to obtain decision rules for fault location. A logical isolation algorithm has been introduced to form a dictionary for hard fault diagnosis using d.c. voltage measurements. The dictionary consists of tables containing voltage ranges of quantized response and numerical codes identifying different faults inthe dictionary. The test measurements chosen by the algorithm are free from redundancy and provide the maximum fault isolation capability of all initially chosen measurements. The algorithm can be easily implemented with some extra software added to the circuit simulator used in fault simulation. Hardware implementation of a logical isolation ATE is simple and efficient compared to a least squares based dictionary. The algorithm has been extended to handle multiple test input conditions. In this research project, we have introduced several new techniques to enhance the capability of the dc fault dictionary. Among our new results, the most significant ones are: (1) The use of the complementary pivot method to find test node voltages under all faults. (2) The set-up of the fault dictionary in the form of integer codes instead of test node voltages. The former technique makes it possible to rapidly analyze large circuits under all fault conditions.
