Book excerpt: Covers the theory and applications of using weak form theory in incompressible fluid-thermal sciences Giving you a solid foundation on the Galerkin finite-element method (FEM), this book promotes the use of optimal modified continuous Galerkin weak form theory to generate discrete approximate solutions to incompressible-thermal Navier-Stokes equations. The book covers the topic comprehensively by introducing formulations, theory and implementation of FEM and various flow formulations. The author first introduces concepts, terminology and methodology related to the topic before covering topics including aerodynamics; the Navier-Stokes Equations; vector field theory implementations and large eddy simulation formulations. Introduces and addresses many different flow models (Navier-Stokes, full-potential, potential, compressible/incompressible) from a unified perspective Focuses on Galerkin methods for CFD beneficial for engineering graduate students and engineering professionals Accompanied by a website with sample applications of the algorithms and example problems and solutions This approach is useful for graduate students in various engineering fields and as well as professional engineers.

This includes most of the ?uid dynamics that one ?nds in everyday life from the ?ow of air in a room to most weather phenomena. Inundertakingthesimulationofincompressible?uid?ows, oneoftentakes many issues for granted. As these ?ows become more realistic, the problems encountered become more vexing from a computational point-of-view. These range from the benign to the profound. At once, one must contend with the basic character of incompressible ?ows where sound waves have been analytically removed from the ?ow. As a consequence vortical ?ows have been analytically “preconditioned,” but the ?ow has a certain non-physical character (sound waves of in?nite velocity). At low speeds the ?ow will be deterministic and ordered, i.e., laminar. Laminar ?ows are governed by a balance between the inertial and viscous forces in the ?ow that provides the stability. Flows are often characterized by a dimensionless number known as the Reynolds number, which is the ratio of inertial to viscous forces in a ?ow. Laminar ?ows correspond to smaller Reynolds numbers. Even though laminar ?ows are organized in an orderly manner, the ?ows may exhibit instabilities and bifurcation phenomena which may eventually lead to transition and turbulence. Numerical modelling of suchphenomenarequireshighaccuracyandmostimportantlytogaingreater insight into the relationship of the numerical methods with the ?ow physics.

Book excerpt: The Twenty-Second Symposium on Naval Hydrodynamics was held in Washington, D.C., from August 9-14, 1998. It coincided with the 100th anniversary of the David Taylor Model Basin. This international symposium was organized jointly by the Office of Naval Research (Mechanics and Energy Conversion S&T Division), the National Research Council (Naval Studies Board), and the Naval Surface Warfare Center, Carderock Division (David Taylor Model Basin). This biennial symposium promotes the technical exchange of naval research developments of common interest to all the countries of the world. The forum encourages both formal and informal discussion of the presented papers, and the occasion provides an opportunity for direct communication between international peers.

Since 1989, the number of participants attending Parallel CFD Conferences has doubled. In order to keep track of current global developments, the Parallel CFD Conference annually brings scientists together to discuss and report results on the utilization of parallel computing as a practical computational tool for solving complex fluid dynamic problems. This volume contains the results of research conducted during the past year.Subject areas covered include: novel parallel algorithms, parallel Euler and Navier-Stokes solvers, parallel Direct Simulation Monte Carlo method and parallel multigrid techniques. The content of the book also demonstrates that considerable effort is being made to utilize parallel computing to solve a variety of fluid dynamics problems in topics such as climate modeling, consultation, aerodynamics and in many other areas.Readers of this book will gain a valid insight into the exciting recent developments in Parallel CFD research.

The purpose of this new publication is to present comprehensive surveys and review articles which provide up-to-date information about recent progress in computational fluid dynamics, on a regular basis. Because of the multidisciplinary nature of CFD, it is difficult to cope with all the important developments in related areas. There are at least ten regular international conferences dealing with different aspects of CFD.It is a real challenge to keep up with all these activities and to be aware of essential and fundamental contributions in these areas. It is hoped that CFD Review will help in this regard by covering the state-of-the-art in this field. The present book contains sixty-two articles written by authors from the US, Europe, Japan and China, covering the main aspects of CFD. There are five sections: general topics, numerical methods, flow physics, interdisciplinary applications, parallel computation and flow visualization. The section on numerical methods includes grids, schemes and solvers, while that on flow physics includes incompressible and compressible flows, hypersonics and gas kinetics as well as transition and turbulence. This book should be useful to all researchers in this fast-developing field.
