Book excerpt: When a project's goals align with an organization's business strategy, the project may likely generate significant business advantages. This paper examines a empirically based, theoretical framework for aligning project management and strategic management. In doing so, it identifies two concerns in developing in aligning project management and business strategy; it reviews the literature on business strategy typologies, project management's strategic function, and alignment studies that show what has been addressed and what has not. It outlines the study's four-phase methodology: reviewing topical literature, analyzing 8 case studies from 7 organizations, interviewing 42 individuals participating in projects at market-leading organizations, and evaluating these findings with a panel of 5 experts, information that the authors used to develop their framework, a model based on Shenhar's Strategic Project Leadership (SPL). It then details the study's findings in relation to the nature of aligning project management and business strategy, listing the patterns in linking Porter's generic strategies to project management's elements and identifying seven propositions for developing a framework. It uses this framework to determine each case study's pattern of aligning project management and business strategy.

However, projects are expected to achieve results that link back to an organization's overall business strategy. This apparent discrepancy led researchers to ask: What does it mean to link project management strategy to business strategy? In Linking Project Management to Business Strategy, researchers were guided by the hypothesis: If projects are successful in aligning their efforts with the business strategy, they will better contribute to the long-term goals of the organization.Linking Project Management to Business Strategy is divided into three sections:Conceptual Foundation provides definitions for terms in found in later sections and creates the conceptual and theoretical framework for examining the issue of strategic alignmentEmpirical Verification examines the previously developed frameworks in order to test the original hypothesisBeyond the Framework analyzes 18 successful projects and identifies the 11 common factors found in all of them

Book excerpt: Recent research has shown that more organizations are introducing project management into their enterprises so to more effectively align their projects with their business strategies and thus realize critical competitive benefits and achieve key organizational goals. But this body of literature lacks information on the processes these organizations use to achieve such alignment. This article examines a theoretical framework that may help organizations align projects and strategy, a framework that highlights the impact of business strategy on project management and of project management on business strategy, identifying the mechanisms for accomplishing alignment. In doing so, it overviews the literature on aligning business strategy and project management, focusing on Porter's three generic strategies, which informed this paper's three-phase study of the literature on aligning projects and strategy as well as eight selected cases involving nine projects within seven organizations. It describes the study's methodology--which adopted then adapted Shenhar's SPL framework--and explains its findings, outlining the proposed theoretical framework and defining its seven propositions. It details how the studied organizations successfully aligned projects and strategy; it lists formulas--based on the Euclidean distance method--for translating this alignment into numeric values and this study's three contributions to aligning projects and strategy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The concept of sustainability has grown in recognition and importance. The pressure on companies to broaden their reporting and accountability from economic performance for shareholders, to sustainability performance for all stakeholders is leading to a change of mindset in consumer behaviour and corporate policies. How can we develop prosperity without compromising the life and needs of future generations? Sustainability in Project Management explores and identifies the questions surrounding the integration of the concepts of sustainability in projects and project management and provides valuable guidance and insights. Sustainability relates to multiple perspectives, economical, environmental and social, but also to responsibility and accountability and values in terms of ethics, fairness and equality. The authors will inspire project managers to be aware of these considerations, and to apply them to the role they play in projects, not just 'doing things right' but 'doing the right things right'.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Fortune Magazine estimated that 70% of all strategies fail, it also noted that most of these strategies were basically sound, but could not be executed. The central premise of Strategic Project Management Made Simple is that most projects and strategies never get off the ground because of adhoc, haphazard, and obsolete methods used to turn their ideas into coherent and actionable plans. Strategic Project Management Made Simple is the first book to couple a step-by-step process with an interactive thinking tool that takes a strategic approach to designing projects and action initiatives. Strategic Project Management Made Simple builds a solid platform upon four critical questions that are vital for teams to intelligently answer in order to create their own strong, strategic foundation. These questions are: 1. What are we trying to accomplish and why? 2. How will we measure success? 3. What other conditions must exist? 4. How do we get there? This fresh approach begins with clearly understanding the what and why of a project - comprehending the bigger picture goals that are often given only lip service or cursory reviews. The second and third questions clarify success measures and identify the risky assumptions that can later cause pain if not spotted early. The how questions - what are the activities, budgets, and schedules - comes last in our four-question system. By contrast, most project approaches prematurely concentrate on the how without first adequately addressing the three other questions. These four questions guide readers into fleshing out a simple, yet sophisticated, mental workbench called "the Logical Framework" - a Systems Thinking paradigm that lays out one's own project strategy in an easily accessible, interactive 4x4 matrix. The inclusion of memorable features and concepts (four critical questions, LogFrame matrix, If-then thinking, and Implementation Equation) make this book unique.

But a few do stick, and this book is such a one. Organizational Strategy, Structure, and Process broke fresh ground in the understanding of strategy at a time when thinking about strategy was still in its early days, and it has not been displaced since." —David J. Hickson, Emeritus Professor of International Management & Organization, University of Bradford School of Management Originally published in 1978, Organizational Strategy, Structure, and Process became an instant classic, as it bridged the formerly separate fields of strategic management and organizational behavior. In this Stanford Business Classics reissue, noted strategy scholar Donald Hambrick provides a new introduction that describes the book's contribution to the field of organization studies. Miles and Snow also contribute new introductory material to update the book's central concepts and themes. Organizational Strategy, Structure, and Process focuses on how organizations adapt to their environments. The book introduced a theoretical framework composed of a dynamic adaptive cycle and an empirically based strategy typology showing four different types of adaptation. This framework helped to define subsequent research by other scholars on important topics such as configurational analysis, organizational fit, strategic human resource management, and multi-firm network organizations.

Book excerpt: #1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • More than two million copies in print! The premier resource for how to deliver results in an uncertain world, whether you’re running an entire company or in your first management job. “A must-read for anyone who cares about business.”—The New York Times When Execution was first published, it changed the way we did our jobs by focusing on the critical importance of “the discipline of execution”: the ability to make the final leap to success by actually getting things done. Larry Bossidy and Ram Charan now reframe their empowering message for a world in which the old rules have been shattered, radical change is becoming routine, and the ability to execute is more important than ever. Now and for the foreseeable future: • Growth will be slower. But the company that executes well will have the confidence, speed, and resources to move fast as new opportunities emerge. • Competition will be fiercer, with companies searching for any possible advantage in every area from products and technologies to location and management. • Governments will take on new roles in their national economies, some as partners to business, others imposing constraints. Companies that execute well will be more attractive to government entities as partners and suppliers and better prepared to adapt to a new wave of regulation. • Risk management will become a top priority for every leader. Execution gives you an edge in detecting new internal and external threats and in weathering crises that can never be fully predicted. Execution shows how to link together people, strategy, and operations, the three core processes of every business. Leading these processes is the real job of running a business, not formulating a “vision” and leaving the work of carrying it out to others. Bossidy and Charan show the importance of being deeply and passionately engaged in an organization and why robust dialogues about people, strategy, and operations result in a business based on intellectual honesty and realism. With paradigmatic case histories from the real world—including examples like the diverging paths taken by Jamie Dimon at JPMorgan Chase and Charles Prince at Citigroup—Execution provides the realistic and hard-nosed approach to business success that could come only from authors as accomplished and insightful as Bossidy and Charan.
