Book excerpt: Excerpt from A d104-Book of the Practice of Equine Medicine The former has been in text-books, and is now in lectures in a systematic form, more ably dealt with than might be carried through by one who has continuously devoted his attention more to the practical details than to the speculative or experimental inquiries of professional work. To the busy practitioner of veterinary medicine, knowing how much isolation is apt to dwarf or egotize him, I am not without hope that this digest of the practice of equine medicine may prove useful, by recalling to his recollection facts and conditions liable to be forgotten, and by giving him the views and conclusions of another regarding conditions which are daily engaging his attention, and often taxing his resources. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Manual of the Theory and Practice of Equine Medicine It is our hope, regarding the many and great difficulties which are necessarily encountered in a work of this kind, that allowance will be made for errors of omission and commission which may be detected. We have adopted a somewhat different classification of disease from that in vogue, and trust that its greater simplicity. Will entail less labour on the part of the student, without rendering it any the less scientific. Throughout we have endeavoured to lay stress on those points which are of very great interest and importance from a comparative pathological point of View. Into the histological structure of the malignant growths Of the horse we have, purposely, not fully entered, it being our purpose to publish, as soon as opportunity arises, a monograph on the comparative pathology and etiology of the malignant growths in man and animals.vi preface. In the treatment of disease we have followed more especially the methods adopted by the late Mr. D. Gress well, and those which practical experience leads us to consider of the greatest value. We have appended chapters on Entozoa and Toxicology, as we consider both these subjects of great importance to the veterinary practitioner. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Veterinary Notes for Horse Owners: A Manual of Horse Medicine and Surgery, Written in Popular Language As the first edition of the Notes had sold out before the end of my second year's veterinary course, I was able to add a great deal of useful new matter to the second edition, which received increased appreciation from the public. I brought out the third edition after I had obtained the diploma of the and had retired from the Army. Since those ancient times, I have continued to treat this work as a horse-owner's note-book, in which I have recorded all the useful veterinary information I have been able to obtain about horses, from personal experience, friends and books. Hence it is invaluable to me as a work of reference, for if I had not written it, I would have probably forgotten at least half of what I had seen, heard and read. I trust that it will be of equal benefit to my readers, whether they are horsemen of ordinary education or veterinary surgeons. The fact that I have spent a large portion of my life in many foreign countries, ought to make this book of special use to English horse-owners who live abroad. I have employed type of different sizes, with the object of maintaining the character of this book as a means of ready reference for non-professional readers, without having to exclude information which they might consider to be too abstruse for their requirements; but which might prove useful to horse-owners possessing more scientific knowledge. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Veterinary Medicine and Surgery in Diseases and Injuries of the Horse Blankets and other clothing upon sick horses should be loosely fastened on; if a surcingle is used, let it be quite slack. Shake and air the clothing once or twice a day, but do not let the horse stand uncovered for any length of time, nor at all unless he is likely to be benefited by it. A seriously sick horse should have all his shoes removed, as it will give him comfort and ease. Fresh Water should be constantly within reach; especially when fever is present, the horse will frequently sip at it. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Horse in Health and Disease: A d104-Book Pertaining to Veterinary Science for Agricultural Students This book is designed as an introductory text to the study of veterinary science in agricultural schools and colleges. It is hoped that stockmen may also find it useful as a reference and aid in the care of animals. In Part I an effort has been made to correlate the structure and function of each organ of the body, and to show how the hidden, parts are related to the form, movements, and utility of the animal. In Part II the causes, methods of prevention, and effects of disease are considered. The horse has been taken as a type, for the reason that it is customary to use this animal as a basis for comparison with our other domestic animals. Reference to cattle, sheep, and swine has been purposely omitted to keep the book within convenient size for use, and so that the teacher may supplement the text with lectures relative to these animals, as his judgment directs. It is recommended that the class-room instruction be amplified with demonstrations in the laboratory, stock-judging pavilion, and clinic whenever possible, as material help is derived from direct observation. Lack of training in matters pertaining to the health of our horses and knowledge about nursing them when they are sick are largely responsible for the loss from disease during 1913 in the United States of over 500,000 head, valued at $58,000,000. If this book aids in preventing such a stupendous loss in the future, it will have justified all efforts that have been made in its preparation.
