This book was released on 2018-02-04 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A d104 Book of Physics for the Use of Students of Science and Engineering, Vol. 1 The preparation of this volume was undertaken to meet a demand that has been growing for some years past for a text-book of Physical Science which should connect more intimately than has hitherto been usual the scientific aspects of Physics with its modern practical applications. The reader must be left to judge how far the authors have succeeded in thus combining the outlooks of the man of science and the engineer. The contents have been selected to meet the requirements of various classes of students: those preparing for Intermediate and other examinations of London and other Universities; and those entering for appointments in the Army, Navy, and Civil Service, or offering themselves for examination in Electrical Engineering (grade I.) by the City and Guilds of London Institute. The book has been arranged in parts, in accordance with the divisions of the subject found convenient in most schools and colleges. Part I., Dynamics, comprises the sections of Mechanics and Applied Mathematics usually studied, and includes sections on motion, statics, and the properties of fluids. Part II., Heat; Part III., Light; Part IV., Sound; and Part V., Magnetism and Electricity; deal respectively with the principles of these subjects and their applications. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Manual of Practical Physics For, Vol. 1: Students of Science and Engineering The aim of the present work is to furnish the student of pure or applied science with a self-contained manual of the theory and manipulation of those measurements in physics which bear most directly upon his subsequent work in other departments Of study and upon his future professional career. Only those experimental methods have been included that are strictly scientific and that can be depended upon to give good results in the hands of the average student. Although several pieces of apparatus, experimental methods, and deriva tions of formulae that possess some. Novelty appear, our fixed purpose has been to use the standard forms except in cases Where an extended trial in large classes has demonstrated the superiority of the proposed innovation. It has been assumed that the experiment is rare that should be performed before the student understands the theory in volved and the derivation Of the formula required. Couse quently the theory of each experiment is given in detail and the required formula developed at length. The more important sources of error are pointed out, and means are indicated by which these errors may be minimized or accounted for. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Text-Book of General Physics: For the Use of Colleges and Scientific Schools The class of students for which this text-book is designed is supposed to have a useful knowledge of trigonometry, but not of calculus. This is in agreement with the courses of instruction in most of our American colleges; but it has ordinarily the disadvantage of leaving rather a large inter val between the study of the philosophy of physics and the application of its principles to engineering. Especially true is this of thermodynamics and electricity where it is Often difficult for the student to recognize the fact that the un accustomed mathematical processes are simply easier means of attaining an understanding of a physical problem and not an end in themselves. For this reason the subjects men tioned are developed with somewhat more completeness than usual, so that the engineering student can find the essential notions of his advanced work logically connected with those acquired at an earlier time. Of course such an extension implies an exercise of choice on the 'part of the teacher as to what may be omitted in first reading with a class of which only a portion expects to pursue the subject farther. In Chapter XLI will be found a treatment, quite ele mentary in character, of the limiting powers of optical instruments. This is, of course, of great philosophical in terest, because it is by the means of such instruments that we attain the greatest enlargement of our intellectual horizon. Notwithstanding the simplicity of the exposition, it does-not seem to have been done before in unmathematical language. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Text-Book of Physics The present tendency in physics teaching is to attach less importance to the formal and academic features of the subject, and to lay greater stress on the applications of physics in daily life. This change of front is in accord with the general movement in education which seeks to give the subjects of instruction a more useful content, drawn from the social and industrial life of the time. Judged by this standard, the kind of physics which views the util ities from afar or ignores them altogether is discredited. But a word of caution is clearly in order. A new truth is never the whole truth. The older physics had much to commend it, despite the caustic criticisms of zealous reformers; for the most practical thing in the world is the foundation of pure science upon which applied sci ence rests. T o eliminate or minimize the fundamentals while attempting to teach their applications is not to pro vide a royal road to learning, but a fool's highway to pretentious ignorance. Pure and applied Science are equally essential to a well rounded course. The one alone is barren; the other, when not well founded in the first, is superficial, disconnected, and trivial. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Elements of Physics, Vol. 1 of 3: A College Text-Book; Mechanics and Heat The beginner in Physics, if he is to be well taught, must study a text-book which contains concise statements of physical laws and a systematic development of principles. He must attend lectures or demonstrations in which the phenomena are shown, and finally he must enter the laboratory and make physical measurements. The present book deals only with the first part of this triple course of instruction. It differs in certain respects from many books which have been written for beginners. Descriptions of the numerous phenomena with which it is necessary for the student to become acquainted have been largely omitted; the assumption being that the study of the text will always be accompanied by, and indeed be supplementary to, a course of carefully arranged and fully illustrated lectures. A knowledge of the elements of the calculus, the natural language of physics, has been taken for granted, but the degree of mathematical experience of the undergraduate reader, necessarily limited, has been kept in view and the various proofs and the demonstra tions have been given the simplest possible form. The concepts of directed and of distributed quantity, which are no less important to the student of physics than are the methods of the calculus, are briefly treated in Chapter II. Of Volume I. And in Chapter I. Of Volume II., respectively, and are used upon occasion throughout the text. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The adoption of the inductive method and the experimental plan of attack in Physics led this branch of study far away from its ancient ally; but now Psychology has appropriated the methods of Physics.
