Book Synopsis Modern Soil Microbiology by : Jan Dirk van Elsas
Download or read book Modern Soil Microbiology written by Jan Dirk van Elsas and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2006-12-21 with total page 698 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the ten years since the publication of Modern Soil Microbiology, the study of soil microbiology has significantly changed, both in the understanding of the diversity and function of soil microbial communities and in research methods. Ideal for students in a variety of disciplines, this second edition provides a cutting-edge examination of a fascinating discipline that encompasses ecology, physiology, genetics, molecular biology, and biotechnology, and makes use of biochemical and biophysical approaches. The chapters cover topics ranging from the fundamental to the applied and describe the use of advanced methods that have provided a great thrust to the discipline of soil microbiology. Using the latest molecular analyses, they integrate principles of soil microbiology with novel insights into the physiology of soil microorganisms. The authors discuss the soil and rhizosphere as habitats for microorganisms, then go on to describe the different microbial groups, their adaptive responses, and their respective processes in interactive and functional terms. The book highlights a range of applied aspects of soil microbiology, including the nature of disease-suppressive soils, the use of biological control agents, biopesticides and bioremediation agents, and the need for correct statistics and experimentation in the analyses of the data obtained from soil systems.

Book Synopsis The Utilization of Bioremediation to Reduce Soil Contamination: Problems and Solutions by : Václav Sasek
Download or read book The Utilization of Bioremediation to Reduce Soil Contamination: Problems and Solutions written by Václav Sasek and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 411 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Traditional reliance on chemical analysis to understand the direction and extent of treatment in a bioremediation process has been found to be inadequate. Whereas the goal of bioremediation is toxicity reduction, few direct, reliable measures of this process are as yet available. Another area of intense discussion is the assessment of market forces contributing to the acceptability of bioremediation. Finally, another important component is a series of lectures and lively exchanges devoted to practical applications of different bioremediation technologies. The range of subjects covers a wide spectrum, encompassing emerging technologies as well as actual, full-scale operations. Examples discussed include landfarming, biopiling, composting, phytoremediation and mycoremediation. Each technology is explored for its utility and capability to provide desired treatment goals. Advantages and limitations of each technology are discussed. The concept of natural attenuation is also critically evaluated since in some cases where time to remediation is not a significant factor, it may be an alternative to active bioremediation operations.

Book Synopsis Handbook of Soils and Climate in Agriculture by : Victor J. Kilmer
Download or read book Handbook of Soils and Climate in Agriculture written by Victor J. Kilmer and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2018-01-18 with total page 454 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The sections in this handbook series reflect the input of different editors and advisory boards, and as a consequence, there is considerable variation in both the depth and coverage offered within a given area. However, an attempt has been made throughout to bring together pertinent information that will serve the needs of nonspecialists, provide a quick reference to material that might otherwise be difficult to locate, and furnish a starting point for further study. The project was undertaken with the realization that the initial volumes in the series could have some obvious deficiencies that will necessitate subsequent revisions. In the meantime, it is felt that the primary objectives of the Sections Editors and their Advisory Boards has been met in this first Edition.
