Book excerpt: From the Arctic to South Africa - one finds them everywhere: Ants. Making up nearly 15% of the entire terrestrial animal biomass, ants are impressive not only in quantitative terms, they also fascinate by their highly organized and complex social system. Their caste system, the division of labor, the origin of altruistic behavior and the complex forms of chemical communication makes them the most interesting group of social organisms and the main subject for sociobiologists. Not least is their ecological importance: Ants are the premier soil turners, channelers of energy and dominatrices of the insect fauna. TOC:The importance of ants.- Classification and origins.- The colony life cycle.- Altruism and the origin of the worker caste.- Colony odor and kin recognition.- Queen numbers and domination.- Communication.- Caste and division of labor.- Social homeostasis and flexibility.- Foraging and territorial strategies.- The organization of species communities.- Symbioses among ant species.- Symbioses with other animals.- Interaction with plants.- The specialized predators.- The army ants.- The fungus growers.- The harvesters.- The weaver ants.- Collecting and culturing ants.- Glossary.- Bibliography.- Index.

Book Synopsis A Bibliography of Ant Systematics by : Philip S. Ward
Download or read book A Bibliography of Ant Systematics written by Philip S. Ward and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 1996-01-01 with total page 430 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This bibliography is a comprehensive compilation of the literature on ant systematics. Covering the period 1758 to 1995, it contains entries for approximately 8,000 publications on the taxonomy, evolution, and comparative biology of ants. Most of the literature citations have been carefully verified and precisely dated. An introductory chapter discusses the problems associated with dating a citation of taxonomic literature. A list of all serials cited (more than 1,300 titles) and their abbreviations accompanies the bibliography.
Download or read book ANTS written by AGOSTI D and published by Smithsonian Books (DC). This book was released on 2000-11-17 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Numbering more than nine thousand described species, ants rank among the most abundant and widespread groups. The collective weight of ants in tropical forests and grasslands may constitute as much as 10 to 15 percent of the animal biomass. Ground-dwelling ants are major invertebrate predators in some areas, and they also have profound effects on flora because of their prodigious ability to consume plants, disperse seeds, and enrich the soil. Interacting with other organisms at every level, ants are ubiquitous, diverse, easy to collect, and sensitive to environmental change -- all attributes that make them well suited to biodiversity studies. Written by thirty leading ant biologists, this comprehensive book describes procedures for surveying the diversity of ground-dwelling ants. It introduces a standardized protocol for collecting ant samples in any part of the world and for conducting repeated sampling over time, which enables researchers to analyze global and longterm patterns. Chapters compare ant diversity to the diversity of other organisms and explain the value of ant studies in monitoring ecosystem change in diverse regions, including Madagascar, Malaysia, India, and Brazil. Covering aspects of ant ecology and taxonomy, species identification, specimen preparation, and sources of sampling equipment, this book provides the necessary foundation for readers from a wide range of backgrounds. It is indispensable not only to ant researchers but also to entomologists, conservationists, students, land managers, and others who assess biodiversity or environmental impacts.
Book Synopsis Australian Lauxaniid Flies by : SP Kim
Download or read book Australian Lauxaniid Flies written by SP Kim and published by CSIRO PUBLISHING. This book was released on 1994-01-01 with total page 457 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Lauxaniidae are one of the largest families of acalyptrate Diptera (series Schizophora) and are distributed in all the major zoogeographical regions of the world. Early taxonomic work on the family began in Europe and some notable studies were done during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Since then few significant revisions on regional faunas have been undertaken. There are 142 recognized genera and about 1550 described species in the world fauna of Lauxaniidae as compiled from available references (Shewell 1965, 1977, 1986, 1987; Stuckenberg 1971a; Miller 1977a,c, 1980; Papp 1984a, 1984b; Yarom 1986; Evenhuis and Okadome 1989; Hirashima 1989; Broadhead 1989; Sasakawa and Pong 1990; Colless and McAlpine 1991; Sasakawa 1992; Silva, pers. comm.). The family has been divided into two subfamilies distinguished principally by the costal form: Homoneurinae Stuckenberg 1971 having a homoneuriform costa (its spinules stop abruptly at or just before the apex of R4 + 5) and Lauxaniinae Shewell 1977 with a sapromyziform costa (the spinules stop well before the apex of R4+ 5).

Download or read book Australian Lauxaniid Flies written by Se Pyong Kim and published by CSIRO Publishing. This book was released on 1994 with total page 464 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Lauxaniidae are one of the largest families of acalyptrate Diptera (series Schizophora) and are distributed in all the major zoogeographical regions of the world. There are 142 recognized genera and about 1550 described species in the world fauna of Lauxaniidae as compiled from available references. The majority of the Australian lauxaniids were described by Malloch during the 1920s, but taxonomic study of the Australian Lauxaniidae in general has been neglected for more than 50 years. The aim of this book is to achieve a major taxonomic revision for the study group primarily using traditional descriptive methods, in which taxa are grouped by morphological features; then, by employing a range of numerical taxonomic methods, to find phenetic patterns that might confirm or discredit the groupings produced by traditional methods.
