Book excerpt: The Italian celebrity chef brings his passion for Tuscan food to the American table in this “well-balanced, deliciously presented cookbook” (Shelf Awareness). Growing up in Lucca, Italy, chef Damiano Carrara learned how to cook from his mother, his grandmother, and especially from his father. Here, he brings those beloved dishes from his family’s table to yours—including his father’s recipe for homemade gnocci with pesto. Carrara’s comforting, delicious recipes range from Pasta e Fagioli (Pasta and Bean Soup) and Insalata di Farro con Gamberi (Farro Salad with Shrimp) to Finocchi Gratinati (Fennel au Gratin), Lasagne Vegetariana ai Carciofini (Vegetarian Baby Artichoke Lasagna), and Panna Cotta scattered with fresh berries or shaved dark chocolate. This is authentic Italian home-style cooking at its best.

Book excerpt: Lucca Montale, a Danish actress, is rushed into hospital after a head-on collision between her car and a truck. She is severely injured and Robert, the doctor treating her, must break the news that she may never see again. They are both suffering the after-effects of love - Robert is just divorced, Lucca has rushed into dramatic, desperate acts. Grondahl masterfully deploys a dual narrative, switching with marvellous insight between the two stories that they tell each other. A literary tour de force that topped the Danish bestseller list for over ten years, Lucca flows effortlessly in Grondahl's seductive and irresistible prose. This is another superb novel from the author of the acclaimed Silence in October.

Book excerpt: Lucca knew enough to protect his heart. He wrapped it in ice and told anyone that would listen he didn’t want a mate. To get his point across he went back in time to what he called an “easier life.” The last thing he expected was Tempest to fall into his lap. Now he has an arm full of female, and he doesn’t want to let her go. Tempest woke up before she was supposed to. She was running from an enemy that wanted her dead. The more she fights, the weaker she gets, then she falls into Lucca’s lap, her mate. She knows that to protect him she’ll have to leave him. They are being stalked, and the only chance for victory is working together. First, they will have to deal with their past and put to rest the evil that makes them shy away from being mates. They’ll have to move quickly. The ones that want them dead won’t wait for them to fall in love. 18 and older

Book excerpt: The twelve essays collected in Pockets of Change locate adaptation within a framework of two overlapping, if not simultaneous, creative processes: on the one hand, adaptation is to be understood as an acknowledged transposition of an existing source-that is, the process of adapting from; on the other hand, adaption is also a process of purposeful shifting and evolving of creative practices in response to external factors, including but not limited to other creative works-in other words, the process of adapting to. This book explores adaptation, then, as an active practice of repetition and as a reactive process of development or evolution. The essays also extend beyond the production, transformation, and interpretation of texts to interrogate the values and practices at work in cultural transition and transformation during periods of social and historical change. Collectively, the papers theorize adaptation by taking on three tasks: first, to examine the conditions under which the two processes of adaptation operate; second, to give an account of the space and moment in which the processes unfold (the 'pockets' of the title); and finally, to examine what emerges from pockets of adaptation. While adapting from and adapting to are both processes that appear to preclude innovation in the way that they acknowledge and depend on external sources, Pockets of Change demonstrates that adaptation is productive. It not only references prior texts, attitudes, practices and media, but it also invites us to re-visit the past and to re-think the present in new ways, potentially giving narrative space to muted or occluded voices. This book therefore brings together an innovative and varied range of approaches to, interpretations and uses of adaptation, challenging the assumption that an adaptation is simply either a 're-make' or the act of turning one medium into another. Adaptation, then, names not only the means by which texts are transformed, but also the space in which that transformation takes place. This anthology highlights the processes of adaptation and transition rather than simply focusing on the relationship between beginning and end products. In identifying these pockets of change this anthology both claims and opens up new spaces in this critical field and mode of textual analysis.
