Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Tallahassee Girl Along with the new order of things came great political excitement, which in the black belt, as middle Florida was called, culminated in many a thrilling coup and lawless adventure in the field of partisan strife. The capital was the scene of the memorable count so disas trous to one party, so valuable to the other, and withal so disreputable to both. Adventurers from all quarters Of the United States, and especially from the East, hurried to Tallahassee with a view to riding into office upon the votes of the poor, ignorant, and kindly-natured freedmen. You know that your father has never allowed you to drive Rubble unless an older person is with you. Oh rubbish, interrupted the girl, more rudely than she intended. That was 'way last year when I was ever so much younger and more - more irresponsible. As if a father can't trust his daughter when she is fifteen years old and she lifted her head proudly, her self-satisfaction strengthened by the use of the big word. And now that he is away I feel it my duty to do as I know he would do if he were at home. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Download or read book Just a Girl (Classic Reprint) written by Charles Garvice and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-31 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Just a Girl So it was with cheerful alacrity that the men gathered round the two who were credited with starting the shindy, and pulled out revolvers and bowie-knives for the free fight which every body knew would set in with the usual severity. Varley Howard was the only man who did not rise. He leaned back in his chair and passed his white hand over his pale, unwrinkled brow and smoothed his black, gray-streaked hair with a gesture and manner of languid indifference. His revolver lay on the table beside a new pack of cards and ready to his hand if he should need it; but it would not amuse him to kill any one, and it was not very likely that any one of the desperadoes, however excited, would desire to kill him. As he leaned back and turned the diamond ring on his finger, he hummed an air from Olivette and looked on at the rowdy scene through half-closed eyes. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Tally Ho, 1948 Although the return of the Seminoles to Tallahassee in 1947 might have been an unexpected innovation, coeducation itself is definitely not a new trend. The West Florida Seminary which incorporated some of the land and buildings formerly called Leon County Female Academy, was until 1859 Open only to men. That year, however, the women staged an invasion and fought for their right to wield a cook book and darning needle. But their victory was Shortlived for the men soon had to fight for the right of the mag nolia and mint julep in the Civil War and WF S was converted into a military school. The soldiers marched on and so did time. In 1882 coeducation again 'came to the fore, or to be more geographically exact, to Tallahassee. Enrollment reached an all-time high of seventy-four. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Polly of the Pines: A Patriot Girl of the Carolinas Out over the swift running water three slender willow poles bent, on the clear current three lines floated, and on the high and grassy bank three young figures sat silent, watchful, and alert. The wind, that warm May afternoon of 1775, was sweet with the balsam breath of the wide pine forests, that in fadeless green, stretched across the Colony of North Carolina; and the Creek, flecked with the shadow of bordering tree and shrub, ran strong with the force it had gathered among the red clay hills, down to its meeting with the Cape Fear River. This book was released on 2018-01-30 with total page 380 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Little Girl in Old Philadelphia She was swinging her gingham sunbonnet, faded beyond any recognition of its pristine coloring, her small hand keeping tight hold of the strings. At every revolution it went swifter and swifter until it seemed a grayish sort of wheel whirling in the late sunshine that sent long shadows among the trees. When she let it go it flew like a great bird, while she laughed sweet, merry childish notes that would have stirred almost any soul. A slim, lithe little maid with a great crop of yellow hair, cut short in the neck, and as we should say now, banged across the forehead. But it was a mass Of frowzy curls that seemed full Of sunshine. With two or three quick leaps she captured it again and was just preparing for her next swirl. Primrose! Primrose! I think thee grows more disorderly every day. What caper is this? Look at these strings, they are like a twisted rope. And if thy bonnet had gone into the pond! For that matter it needs the washtub.
