Book excerpt: "David and Jonathan - The Tale of Two Friends by William Guthrie bridges a divide of thousands of years, from friendship rehearsed in oral tradition to friendship rehearsed on Facebook but always the same in essence, i.e. friendship. In a world of greater isolation where individuals spend so much time by themselves in front of computers, it is refreshing and life-giving to see the banner of friendship raised high and promoted. This book has the potentiality of propelling people into deeper satisfaction and even deeper meaning in their lives." The Rt. Rev. William E. Swing, D.D., 7th Bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of California, President and Founder of the United Religions Initiative. "The Rev. Dr. William Guthrie has given us the gift of exploring the many dimensions of the friendship between Jonathan, son of Saul; and David, Saul's successor as king. In so doing, Dr. Guthrie draws out the wisdom of that biblical friendship and how it can be applied to the challenges that beset friendships today." The Rt. Rev. Mark M. Beckwith, D.D., Bishop, Episcopal Diocese of Newark.

Book excerpt: There are two sides to every story. A little girl finds a strange beast in the woods and takes it home as a pet. She feeds it, shows it off to her friends and gives it a hat. But that night it escapes. Then the beast tells the story of being kidnapped by the girl, who forcefed it squirrel food, scared it with a group of beasts and wrapped it in wool. Can the two beasts resolve their differences? An eye-opening story that makes you look at things from a different perspective. 'Roberton's premise is as sublime as it is simple, with a subtle message. [...] Totally delightful.' - Kirkus Reviews

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A gangster and an undercover cop. A Midwesterner and a Southerner. Two men from different walks of life, both raised to be prejudiced toward the others race. Thats the story of Joseph and Wallace. It is an unlikely relationship because of the radical differences between them. Joseph is Black. Wallace is White. They met twenty years ago in a hotel hot tub and began a relationship that has developed into a deep friendship. Both men overcame their racial prejudices and joined together in ministry. They learned to invest in each other and take the risks necessary to learn each others story. Their combined story reflects their cultures and is the basis for the book. Many readers will identify with their lives. There is an openness between Joseph and Wallace. Neither man compromises who he is in order to be a confidant to the other. The influence of Josephs dad was very important in his life while Wallace was raised without a father in the home. Each of these men has significant statements to make concerning the influence of a father in a childs life. This underlying theme sets the stage for the merging of two unlikely men into a godly friendship. Now, serving together, they speak in the United States and Africa to adults and youth about the choices that life offers. The common factor they have shared from the beginning of their relationship is their individual commitment of faith in Jesus Christ. They both know that God designed their lives and brought them together. What they have overcome here will last with them throughout eternity.

Book excerpt: For so many of us, our friends are like family members--we lean on them through our highest highs and our lowest lows--but sometimes those friendships don't turn out quite as we hoped. Bible teacher Kelly Needham debunks our world's constricted, narrow view of friendship and casts a richer, more life-giving, biblical vision for friendship. In Friend-ish, Kelly Needham reminds us that we were called to more than halfhearted friendships and lukewarm connections. We need something more stable, secure, and sacred. We were designed for real friendship--but the difficult truth is that too many of us are settling for less. Kelly deconstructs what Scripture says about the gift of friendship and takes a closer look at the distorted view that most of us have instead. As she shares the lessons she's learned from experience, Kelly paints her own glorious vision of what Christian friendship could look like. With hard-fought wisdom, a clear view of Scripture, and a been-there perspective, Friend-ish teaches us how to: Recognize symptoms of idolatry and toxic dependency Boldly ask for what we need from our community of friends Understand and address the problems that arise in friendship--from neediness to discord Recognize when it's time to end an unhealthy friendship Reorient toward the purposeful, loving relationships we all crave that ultimately bring us closer to God Find the friends you need and start to become that friend for others Join Kelly as she challenges you to view your chosen family in a new light, gain a vision of friendship according to Jesus, and finally enjoy friendships as God intended.

Book excerpt: Life is too short to gain all knowledge by personal experience; one needs to learn from the experiences of others. The best way to do this is through books. A short story deals with an issue generally faced by us at different stages in life and interestingly shows how to tackle it. Whether you agree with the author or not it is certainly educative. Stories may be short but their impact would continue to reverberate for a long time in the reader's mind. Beware! Authors have a knack of casting a spell on you and attracting you to their point of view. Readers should step off from the author from time to time and reexamine author's logic critically. This is a collection of stories; therefore I am giving a brief idea of each story. Time warp: One is likely to face several crossroads during life, at which one needs to take a decision. One's experiences are one's past; one's expectations and ambitions are one's future. The former tends to caution the latter. In this story both of them were personified and brought to the same plane as the present to advise Murthy who was at a crossroads in his life. Another world: This is fiction drifting into a fairy tale; it is Venkat's first contact with a raw unkind world. Crime and punishment: Some husbands like Marthandam are unreasonably cruel toward's their wives. Once the torture crosses the limit of tolerance of the woman, she chooses an effective way to set things right, like Chidrupi did in this story. A.I.I.E.: Sometimes, well known persons might look bewitchingly attractive and make you run after them! That was what Murthy discovered. So was it written: A construction worker Bhadradri found a copper plate which lured him to find the hidden tresure. He succeeded but could not survive to enjoy the find! Divine justice: A greedy Kiran tried to grab the property of Kalyani by disputing her parentage. Scientific evidence nailed her lie in the open court. Scorpion's sting: In a weaker moment, even a good person like the manager of the choultry, might fall victim to evil influence. A circumstance might induce him to reform himself by renouncing everything and becoming a sanyasi. A husband's folly: Unlike Narayana, husbands and wives should trust each other implicitly (Even in spite of occasional lapses). Extraction of truth: Professional etiquette is essential for every professional but more so for physicians. A small mistake of Dr.Satyamurthy and his effort to cover it up boom-ranged on him. A tale of two 'Friends': Beware! Sometimes, we come across wicked persons like Gireesh who use friendship for purely selfish purposes. ---------

Book excerpt: A Tale of Two Soldiers is a memoir about the unlikely friendship an American Jewish G.I. and trained sniper for the US Army, formed with a German Luftwaffe pilot during WWII. On Dec. 18, 1944, twenty-one-year-old Max Gendelman was captured in the Battle of the Bulge, one of only a handful in his company to survive. Starving and dazed, his dog tags blown off, he was marched through German villages and eventually arrived at a farm the Reich had commandeered from a German family. The family's grandson, Karl Kirschner, a lieutenant in the Luftwaffe conscripted against his will, was hiding out in one of the barns. To Max's astonishment one day Karl spoke to him through the fence; they discovered a shared passion for chess, and began to secretly meet to play the game. As they got to know each other, they recognized what they needed to do; they formed a pact, a plan to escape together. This was the start of a friendship that would endure for more than six decades.

Now both in their mid-sixties and retired, Frank is looking forward to spending a lot of quality time hanging out with his lifelong friend. But all that is threatened when Frank sees Clay going around the bend. Clay denies he has a problem and rejects Frank's initial suggestions for help. But when Frank stumbles upon a drug that might help, he renews his efforts to help his buddy and he talks Clay into taking the drug. That works great, for a while. But Frank couldn't quite bring himself to tell Clay the entire truth about the drug, and that deception has tragic consequences, not only for Clay but also for Frank.
