Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Engine condition monitoring systems have been developed to assist flight line maintenance activities and aid in the transition of aircraft engine maintenance philosophy from that of maximum operating time to reliability centered or on condition maintenance. This study includes a comprehensive review of past, current, and proposed Air Force applications of turbine engine monitoring systems to describe the major features of TEMS. Engine performance data output from TEMS to the various engine management functions are analyzed. The authors conclude that TEMS data and the existing or proposed engine management systems are not directly compatible. Moreover, the analysis indicates that implementation of TEMS and an on condition maintenance policy would require a greatly expanded data base to accomplish the required engine management record keeping, monitoring, and forecasting tasks. Several recommendations are offered for interfacing TEMS with the engine management systems. Areas for further research are suggested. (Author).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The propulsion system is arguably the most critical part of the aircraft; it certainly is the single most expensive component of the vehicle. Ensuring that engines operate reliably without major maintenance issues is an important goal for all operators, military or commercial. Engine health management (EHM) is a critical piece of this puzzle and has been a part of the engine maintenance for more than five decades. In fact, systematic condition monitoring was introduced for engines before it was applied to other systems on the aircraft. Diagnostics and Prognostics of Aerospace Engines is a collection of technical papers from the archives of SAE International, which introduces the reader to a brief history of EHM, presents some examples of EHM functions, and outlines important future trends. The goal of engine health maintenance is ultimately to reduce the cost of operations by catching problems before they become major issues, by helping reduce repair times through diagnostics, and by facilitating logistic optimization through prognostic estimates. Diagnostics and Prognostics of Aerospace Engines shows that the essence of these goals has not changed over time.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this SAE Aerospace Information Report (AIR) is to present a quantitative approach for evaluating the performance and capabilities of an Engine Monitoring System (EMS). The value of such a methodology is in providing a systematic means to accomplish the following: 1Determine the impact of an EMS on key engine supportability indices such as Fault Detection Rate, Fault Isolation Rate, Mean Time to Diagnose, In-flight Shutdowns (IFSD), Mission Aborts, and Unscheduled Engine Removals (UERs). 2Facilitate trade studies during the design process in order to compare performance versus cost for various EMS design strategies, and 3Define a "common language" for specifying EMS requirements and the design features of an EMS in order to reduce ambiguity and, therefore, enhance consistency between specification and implementation. The techniques used for this methodology borrow from those used for testability analysis and are modified to apply to the unique aircraft supportability definitions in item 1 above. While the discussion and examples in this document focus on aircraft engines and their components, the methods and terms in this AIR are applicable to other systems. For example starting systems can be considered to be within the scope of the document. It will be noted that many of the terms and measures used in the document reflect a military bias. It is anticipated that the methods described will either apply directly to commercial aviation measures or can be readily adapted. AIR4985 has been reaffirmed to comply with the SAE Five-Year Review policy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Condition-Based Maintenance in Aviation: The History, The Business and The Technology describes the history and practice of Condition-Based Maintenance (CBM) systems by showcasing ten technical papers from the archives of SAE International, stretching from the dawn of the jet age down to the present times. By scientifically understanding how different components degrade during operations, it is possible to schedule inspections, repairs, and overhauls at appropriate intervals so that any incipient failure can be detected well in advance. Today, this includes more sensors and analytics so that periodic inspections are replaced by automated "continuous" inspections, and analytical methods that detect imminent failures and predict degradation issues more economically and efficiently. Similar concepts are also being developed for delivering prognostics functions, such as tracking of remaining useful life (RUL) of life-limited parts in aircraft engines. The discipline within CBM that deals with this is called prognostics and health management (PHM), which covers all aspects of diagnostics and prognostics, including modeling of systems and subsystems, sensing, data transmission, storage and retrieval, analytical methods, and decision making. Traditionally, nondestructive testing (NDT) methods have been employed during the major airplane checks to assess structural damage. These techniques are enhanced with in- situ sensing techniques that can continuously monitor aircraft structures and report on their health. The move to condition-based assessment of maintenance needs to be balanced by the assurance that safety is not compromised, that initial cost of new equipment is amortized by the savings, and that regulatory authorities are on board with any modifications to the planned maintenance schedule. The trend is clearly to include more CBM functions into Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul (MRO) processes so better cost control can be achieved without ever comprising passenger safety.

Book excerpt: The early detection of the malfunctions and faults is crucial for performance and reliability of automobiles. In the last millennium, the existing automobile on-board diagnosis systems were incapable of diagnosing some faults such as loss of engine compression, plug-not-firing and carburettor. This set of faults is very important to be detected, and more so that, automobile systems of the future will be autonomous and a self driven system with little or no human interventions. A new condition monitoring approach that uses the sense of smell was investigated to diagnose the faults of plug-not-firing, loss of compression and carburettor fault. An electronic nose based condition monitoring hardware and software was developed to obtain a smell print of the exhaust fumes of an automobile gasoline engine in different operating conditions. This work presents results of experiments based on the data obtained (1400 x 10 data samples each for ten (10) fault classes) from the developed condition monitoring scheme for gasoline fuelled automobile engine using four different algorithms.
