Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Warranty is important financially to American manufacturers, especially automotive companies. Carmakers and suppliers must work aggressively to improve their warranty management approach as warranty cost often equals or exceeds their investment in engineering. This thesis focuses on studying warranty management in a supply chain from a systems perspective. Warranty data in the automotive industry, focused upon a "Tier one" supplier, is analyzed to obtain general warranty trends and typical failure types. Following the data analysis and hypothesis formation, a sequential series of surveys and interviews within the supplier are conducted in attempt to determine the root causes of warranty failures. A major finding of the study is the lack of a cross-company and long-term approach for dealing with warranty. Other root causes (though not as deeply imbedded as that noted first) include the lack of design discipline, design knowledge, and resources in the product development process. In addition, unclear accountability, poor communication, and lack of a supplier management process delay the warranty resolution process. Furthermore, the culture and mindset in an organization is a critical element in effective warranty management. A reactive warranty firefighting mindset is inadequate to attack the significant warranty issues. Based upon solving the root causes found in the research, the thesis provides five specific recommendations. These recommendations appear likely to be useful to a wide variety of automotive companies as well as manufacturers in other industries.

Book excerpt: Cut warranty costs by reducing fraud with transparent processes and balanced control Warranty Fraud Management provides a clear, practical framework for reducing fraudulent warranty claims and other excess costs in warranty and service operations. Packed with actionable guidelines and detailed information, this book lays out a system of efficient warranty management that can reduce costs without upsetting the customer relationship. You'll dig into the whole spectrum of warranty fraud, from simple sloppy procedures to systematic organized crime, and get to know the fraudulent parties, the victims, as well as the objectives and methods of the fraudulent activities in different scenarios. You'll learn how to implement controls to detect and reduce fraudulent claims and decrease the overall warranty costs. The impact of fraudulent claims is plainly spelled out alongside detailed descriptions of typical symptoms and process gaps present in diverse companies. A comprehensive, multi-modal framework for robust warranty management is presented as a template for revamping your own company's strategy. Fraudulent warranty claims occupy an estimated 3-15 percent of the average company's warranty costs, which generally average between 1-4 percent of sales. Many companies are unaware of the issue or struggle to take action against the claims for fear of upsetting business partners, or because they lack tangible evidence. This book details a robust warranty control framework that institutes transparency and control over the whole warranty chain—supporting the process far beyond just fraud reduction. Understand the different actors (customers, sales channels, service agents, warranty providers, etc.) and different forms of warranty fraud Uncover issues in your company's warranty processes Learn methods to detect and prevent fraudulent activities Implement a robust system of warranty cost control Warranty fraud is a major cost-control issue for most companies, but the sensitive nature of the topic leaves most reluctant to share their experiences and divulge their strategies. Warranty Fraud Management brings warranty fraud out into the open, and provides a clear, actionable framework for cost-savings through fraud reduction.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A fail-safe supply network is designed to mitigate the impact of variations and disruptions on people and corporations. This is achieved by (1) developing a network structure to mitigate the impact of disruptions that distort the network structure and (2) planning flow through the network to neutralize the effects of variations. In this monograph, we propose a framework, develop mathematical models and provide examples of fail-safe supply network design. We show that, contrary to current thinking as embodied in the supply network literature, disruption management decisions made at the strategic network design level are not independent from variation management decisions made at the operational level. Accordingly, we suggest that it is beneficial to manage disruptions and variations concurrently in supply networks. This is achieved by architecting fail-safe supply networks, which are characterized by the following elements: reliability, robustness, flexibility, structural controllability, and resilience. Organizations can use the framework presented in this monograph to manage variations and disruptions. Managers can select the best operational management strategies for their supply networks considering variations in supply and demand, and identify the best network restoration strategies including facility fortification, backup inventory, flexible production capacity, flexible inventory, and transportation route reconfiguration. The framework is generalizable to other complex engineered networks.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the next twenty years, the role and contributions of successfully managed projects will continue to grow in importance to aerospace organizations, especially considering the demands of emerging markets. The accompanying challenges will be how to effectively reduce product and process cost where known (incremental) and unknown (transformational) technological innovation is required. Managing Aerospace Projects brings together ten seminal SAE technical papers that support the vision of a more holistic and integrated approach to highly complex projects. Using the concept of project management levers, Dr. Jimmy Williams, Jr., the editor of this title, expands on the critical importance of correctly deciding on •Organizational strategies •Technology and product strategy •Global portfolio strategy •Project portfolio strategy Sub-optimized strategies result in and contribute to a portfolio of misdirected projects and organizational dissatisfaction with project management outcomes unrelated to the actual project management process. As an example, ensuring the convergence and readiness of technologies that are critical for the design, development, and assembly of aircraft requires a disciplined and flexible approach for product and technology development. Operating in an environment in which customer needs and supplier capabilities are dynamic requires continual focus on a portfolio of projects, initiatives, and capabilities that result in sustaining competitive advantage and influence. Managing Aerospace Projects stresses the positive impact of project classification and the specific handling and leadership knowledge requirements so that these endeavors are indeed successful. Some comparisons and lessons from the automotive industry are offered. The notion that project management competence and capabilities are embedded in distinct ways of coordinating and combining multiple competencies suggests that failing to recognize the required organizational adaptations could be a major contributor to sub-optimized project management outcomes.

This doctoral thesis sets out to analyse the contextual and organisational framework within which these activities are set and the practices employed by professionals in the field. This analysis draws on a set of interview-based data from large corporations in Europe and Brazil, predominantly from the chemical, energy, trading, and general manufacturing industries. Due to their diverse natures, the subjects of customer and financial institution counterparty credit risk are treated separately, addressing for each the organisation of the function, data acquisition process, and IT setup recommendable in order to effectively drive risk management, including a review for the practitioner to analyse his or her processes. A final chapter with analyses regarding trade credit insurance, sovereign risk, and quantitative special items rounds off the text making it into a comprehensive treatise on credit risk management in an industrial corporation.
