Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The paper provides guidelines for managers and technical staff in extension agencies who plan, organize, implement and utilize monitoring activities and, when necessary, subsequent evaluations. It defines the information needs of extension managers, discusses administrative and logistic requirements, and reviews techniques for data collection, analysis, presentation and dissemination which experience has shown to be realistic and timely for extension agencies. The Training and Visit approach to agricultural extension services facilitates the organization and utilization of a monitoring system because of its detailed work programs, intensive training and supervision of field agents, and systematic feedback from the farmers to management. The paper focuses on extension agencies using the T & V approach but is of general application for any extension method.

Book excerpt: This guide is aimed to propose a holistic, systemic, and easy-to-use methodology that is multiscalar, multisectoral, and multidimensional for the M&E of public EAS systems to help identify gaps and pathways to strengthen and reform the public EAS system. It starts with analyses of the common objectives, subject, challenges, lessons learned, and prospects of the existing M&E systems and expounds on the logical framework, rationale and objectives of the proposed M&E methodology from a multistakeholder perspective. Then it proposes M&E frameworks at the national and grassroots levels following such order as the introduction, key M&E elements, indicator framework, and operational framework. Next, it looks at the issues of data sources, data collection, and capacity building, focusing on the institutionalization of the M&E system in the public EAS. Finally, it introduces the commonly used tools and methods of data analysis, focusing on the weighting of indicators, scoring methods, and integrated analytical frameworks.

Download or read book Agricultural Extension and Research written by Dennis Purcell and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 1997-01-01 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Environmentally Sustainable Development Studies and Monograph Series No. 17. A 1995 publication from the World Bank, Monitoring Environmental Progress: A Report on Work in Progress, generated great interest in the use of indicators to measure the pace and direction of change in environmentally sustainable development. In particular, the attempts to define what it means to be wealthy or poor by recognizing that a countrys wealth is the combination of various forms of capital--produced, natural, and human resources--led to new thinking on what constitutes wealth and how it might be measured. The current document, Expanding the Measure of Wealth: Indicators of Environmentally Sustainable Development, extends the earlier analysis by highlighting portfolio indicators for tracking a countrys progress toward sustainable development. These include new estimates of national wealth and genuine savings, a detailed analysis of changes in subsidies that have environmental consequences, and progress on the conceptual foundations of social capital. The new estimates reinforce the importance of the natural resource base of all economies as well as the fundamental role of human resources, including both human capital and the more difficult to define concept of social capital.

Download or read book Agricultural Extension written by World Bank. Agriculture and Rural Development Department and published by . This book was released on 1990 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the 1970s, the Bank has promoted a system of extension management which emphasizes the importance of training staff and visiting farmers according to predetermined schedules. This so-called training and visit system has undergone many modifications and its implementation, coupled with lessons learned in many different countries, has revealed basic principles on which to build future extension initiatives. The paper sets out these principles but stresses the need to modify system details according to local needs. The core message of the paper is that there can be no "blueprint" for extension but that certain fundamentals are critically important.
