Book excerpt: Excerpt from Synopsis of the Flora of Colorado The "Synopsis of the Flora of Colorado," which the survey now presents to the public, has been prepared by Prof. Thomas C. Porter, of Lafayette College, Easton, Pennsylvania, and Mr. John M. Coulter, one of the assistants connected with the survey for the past two years. It is intended to be a type of a series of "handbooks" of different branches of natural history, to be published from time to time as a part of the series of "Miscellaneous Publications," for the use of students all over the country. No. 3 of the series is now passing through the press, and has been prepared by the eminent ornithologist, Dr. E. Cones, U. S. A. It will form an octavo volume of several hundred pages, bringing the whole subject of western ornitholgy up to date. The mountain regions of Colorado are now so accessible to the traveling public, that this synopsis will prove a most valuable aid to students, and travelers who can, are annually visiting Colorado in great numbers. Indeed, the mountainous portions more nearly resemble the Alpine districts of Central Europe, not only in the scenery, but also in the different forms of vegetation. The tide of travel is fast turning in this direction, and the demand for works of this kind will necessarily be very great. It should be stated here, that the obligations of the survey to Professor Porter, for his share in the work, are very much increased from the fact that he occupied several months in its preparation without compensation from the Government. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Field Book of Western Wild Flowers In this little book a very large number of the commoner wild flowers growing in the United States, west of the Rocky Mountains, are pictured and described. It is the first attempt to supply a popular field book for the whole West. The field is vast, including within its limits all sorts of climate and soil, producing thousands of flowers, infinite in variety and wonderful in beauty, their environment often as different as that of Heine's Pine and Palm. In such strange homes as the Grand Canyon and the Petrified Forest of Arizona, or the deserts of Utah and southern California, we find the oddest desert plants, forced to curious expedients in order to sustain life amidst almost perpetual heat and drought, but often displaying blossoms of such brilliance and delicacy that they might well be envied by their more fortunate sisters, flourishing beside shady waterfalls, in a "happy valley" like Yosemite, or a splendid mountain garden, such as spreads in many-colored parterres of bloom around the feet of Mt. Rainier. On the wind-swept plains hundreds of flowers are to be found; many kinds of hardy plants brighten the salty margins of the sea cliffs, or bloom, at the edge of the snow on rocky mountain peaks, while;quantities of humble, everyday flowers border our country roadsides or tint the hills and meadows with lavish color. The field includes the States of Washington, Oregon, California, Idaho, Nevada, Utah and Arizona and to designate this whole field the term West is used in this book. The term Northwest designates Washington, Oregon, northern Idaho, and northern California, and the term Southwest covers southern California and Arizona. The flowers found only in the Rocky Mountains are not included, and it may be noted here that exceedingly few of the western flowers cross the Rockies and are found in the East. Book excerpt: From the Pinacate lava fields and expansive dunes to the shores of the Gulf of California, the Gran Desierto is one of the hottest and driest places in the Western Hemisphere. Yet this region in the state of Sonora in northwestern Mexico embraces a remarkable number of habitats with a fascinating and surprisingly rich flora. This is the heart of the Sonoran Desert, still in a largely primordial state, in juxtaposition with the ravished wetlands of the once great Río Colorado. Flora of the Gran Desierto is the culmination of more than twenty-five years of research in this magnificent desert and delta by botanist Richard Felger. This comprehensive floristic study of more than 565 species of vascular plants features original diagnostic descriptions and innovative identification keys to the families, genera, and species. Particular attention has been devoted to taxa that are poorly known. Even weeds and their histories are treated in detail. Hundreds of illustrations by such eminent botanical artists as Lucretia Brezeale Hamilton, Matt Johnson, and Bobbi Angell will aid in the identification of plants. Common names of plants are given in English, Spanish, and O'odham. While emphasizing scientific accuracy, the book is written in an accessible style. Felger's observations and knowledge of plant ecology, geographic distribution, evolution, ethnobotany, plant variation and special adaptations, and the history of the region provides botanists, naturalists, ecologists, conservationists, and anyone else celebrating the desert with readable, interesting, and important information. With two of Mexico's newest biosphere reserves—the Pinacate and the Upper Gulf of California—this region is a keystone for desert conservation efforts. Its location linking vast preserves to the north makes this book especially useful for anyone interested in borderland studies and the Sonoran Desert. Flora of the Gran Desierto represents a most creative, definitive, and enthusiastic treatment of Sonoran Desert plant life and is highly relevant to ecological restoration in deserts and wetlands in arid places worldwide.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Botanic Contributions Relating to the Flora of Western North America Mr. Lindheimer's plan for exploring the botany of Texas, and preparing specimens of dried plants for distribution, was announced in Silliman's Journal for July, 1843. The collee tion of that season, owing to various misfortunes, having been much smaller than was anticipated, it was thought best to defer its distribution until that 'for the year 1844 should come to hand. A part of the second collection was lost in the course of transmission to St. Louis; those which were received in sufficient quantity for distribution extend the number to 318. Mr. Lindheimer is now entering upon an unexplored field west of the Colorado River, and we may confidently expect that a rich harvest of peculiar plants will reward his efforts during the present season. This collection will be assorted and distributed without delay, and our ac count of them duly published in the pages of this journal. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Annals of Nature, 1820: Or Annual Synopsis of New Genera and Species of Animals, Plants, Etc; Discovered in North America The following lines shall contain many of my unpublished discoveries, made be tween'1816 and 1819. In the states of new-york, Pennsylvania, Vermont, New Jersey, Maryland, Virginia, Kentucky, Ohio, Indiana and Illinois, but sever al must still be delayed, as well as the figures. As my Ichthyology, or natural history ofthe Fishes of the Ohio, (containing 100 new species) is now under the press, the fishes of that river shall not be mentioned here. 'if I should occasion ally repeat the descriptions of some few new animals and plants, already commu micated to some societies, or journalists, the blame is their own. Why do they delay the publication of them and how am I to know if they ever received them, 8: mean to publish them Do they wish me to wait until somebody may follow the path which I have Opened, and anticipating my publications, deprive me of the fruit of my labor, (as it has been already attempted) and of the only reward I ever hope for my individual exertions, the esteem of the friends of knowledge I shall very seldom mention again those which have been already published, ex cept when they are only to be found in journals of very limited circulation; or when it will be needful to illustrate more carefully their characters or history. Very few Reptiles, Shells and Fossils will be introduced, although they include some of my most numerous discoveries; because I have already prepared several letters on our Erpetology for the American Journal of Science I am besides en' gaged in writing a general Conchology of the land shells and fresh water shells of the United States, and I have undertaken with Mr. John D. Clifi'ord to de scribe all the fossil remains of the western states. To those who may happen to regret the continual increase of} new genera and new species, I shall observe, that unless we detect and fix all the unknown genera and Species of beings existing in our country and on earth, we cannot extend and secure our researches after their properties, qualities and manners. Those who deplore the increase of natural knowledge, or knowledge of any kind, aregbelow our notice; they ought to be ranked with the enemies of mankind and. Of our moral powers. But from those who prefer to see new beings and materials ap pear under a handsome and prolix shape, I shall request to afford me the means of gratifying their peculiar taste, and when they do, 1 shall not fail to comply. Yet I shall add, that it is better for the, science and our purse, that many new objects should be introduced under a small compass, than when a few are scattered through amass of extraneous or compiled matter. My constant aim has been the extension of knowledge rather than the compilation of old materials. I wish that many naturalists and philosophers would always have the same object in view. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Flora of the Vicinity of New York It is a matter of common observation that these plants are not generally distributed throughout the region. In traveling from the Catskills to Cape May, the northern and southern limits of the area studied, we see a variety of plants found in one or the other of these widely separated localities, but not in both of them. Many species find their outposts of distribution near New York. Some appear to have come from the North or South, a few from the West, others are appar ently endemic in the area, and this great quantity of forms, the ap parent chaos of it all, raises many questions. What is the real com position of our flora, whence derived, and above all how did it reach its present luxuriance and beauty? The attempt to answer these ques tions necessitates a review of the causes that have influenced the origin and distribution of our native flora. For all practical purposes the agencies affecting the distribution of our native plants may be divided into edaphic and climatic ones. Under the first must be considered all questions of the relation of the vegetation to the soil and available water supply; or more simply stated the geological factors of distribution; under the second the relation of the flora to climate must be the chief concern. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elementary Flora of the Northwest This book was written primarily on account of the great need for some such work in the schools of the Northwest. Geographically it covers Oregon, Idaho, Washington, and the coastal region of south western British Columbia. The usual limited spring flora omits so many plants that the user must know beforehand the name of the particular plant whose name he is seeking, in order that he may find by the index whether the book includes or omits it. This is absurd. Usually there is a species de scription, whose necessary brevity often makes it do equally well for a number of species not included. In this book the keys are complete so far as they go, except in. A very few genera of grasses, in which the limits are expressly stated. This will enable teachers to hand out for analysis plants they do not them selves know. This is specially desirable in the Northwest, where teachers may move to other schools only a hundred miles away and find a tremendous change in the flora. It is unreasonable in the Northwest to expect teachers of botany to know all the local plants, even though they may have specialized in the subject in an under graduate course. Book excerpt: Russell Page, one of the legendary gardeners and landscapers of the twentieth century, designed gardens great and small for clients throughout the world. His memoirs, born of a lifetime of sketching, designing, and working on site, are a mixture of engaging personal reminiscence, keen critical intelligence, and practical know-how. They are not only essential reading for today’s gardeners, but a master’s compelling reflection on the deep sources and informing principles of his art. The Education of a Gardener offers charming, sometimes pointed anecdotes about patrons, colleagues, and, of course, gardens, together with lucid advice for the gardener. Page discusses how to plan a garden that draws on the energies of the surrounding landscape, determine which plants will do best in which setting, plant for the seasons, handle color, and combine trees, shrubs, and water features to rich and enduring effect. To read The Education of a Gardener is to wander happily through a variety of gardens in the company of a wise, witty, and knowledgeable friend. It will provide pleasure and insight not only to the dedicated gardener, but to anyone with an interest in abiding questions of design and aesthetics, or who simply enjoys an unusually well-written and thoughtful book.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Plant Succession: An Analysis of the Development of Vegetation Development and Structure of Vegetation (1904) and Research Methods in Ecology in which an endeavor to organize the Whole field of present-day succession was made for the first time. The studies of the past decade have confirmed and broadened the original concepts, and have led irresistibly to the conclusion that they are of universal application. The summer of 1913 and the spring and sum mer of 1914 were spent in testing both principles and processes through out the vegetation of the western half of the continent. The area scrutinized extends from the Great Plains to the Pacific Coast and from the Canadian Rockies to the Mexican boundary. The great climax formations of this region were traversed repeatedly, and their development and relations subjected to critical analysis and comparison.
