Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Symbolical Dictionary The Editor has for many years past, had a deep conviction of the value of this work. When he commenced the study of Prophecy, he had not proceeded far, when he found, in the chief authors which fell in his way, frequent reference to Daubuz on the subject of Symbols; and he therefore took an early opportunity of procuring a copy of his work. It is, however, very remarkable, that, notwithstanding it is the principal work of the kind in the English language, or indeed in any other, it is not even mentioned in the Title page of the Book of which it originally formed a part: and hence it happens, that, as a Symbolical Dictionary, it is not to be found in any Catalogue of literature. From this circumstance its very existence is unknown, except unto the few who are acquainted with Daubuz's other writings. Daubuz's work is entitled, "A perpetual Commentary on the Revelation of St. John, with a Preliminary Discourse concerning the principles upon which the said Revelation is to be understood." It was published in 1720, three years after his death. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Synopsis Dictionary of Subjects and Symbols in Art by : James Hall
Download or read book Dictionary of Subjects and Symbols in Art written by James Hall and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-05-04 with total page 775 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The understanding and enjoyment of a work of art depends as much on the story it depicts as on the artist's execution of it. But what were once biblical or classical commonplaces are not so readily recognizable today. This book relates in a succinct and readable way the themes, sacred and secular, on which the repertoire of Western art is based. Combined here in a single volume are religious, classical, and historical themes, figures of moral allegory, and characters from romantic poetry that appeared throughout paintings and sculpture in Western art before and after the Renaissance. More than just a dictionary, this text places these subjects in their narrative, historical, or mythological context and uses extensive cross-referencing to enhance and clarify the meanings of these themes for the reader. The definitive work by which others are compared, this volume has become an indispensable handbook for students and general appreciators alike. This wholly redesigned second edition includes a new insert of images chosen by the author, as well as a new preface and index to highlight the ideas, beliefs, and social and religious customs that form the background of much of this subject matter.
Book Synopsis A Key to the Symbolical Language of Scripture (Classic Reprint) by : Thomas Wemyss
Download or read book A Key to the Symbolical Language of Scripture (Classic Reprint) written by Thomas Wemyss and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-10 with total page 522 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Key to the Symbolical Language of Scripture Whatever may conduce to the illustration of the Sacred Scriptures, must be acceptable to every well-constituted mind. How far the present attempt is of that description, must be left to the judgment of the reader to decide. It has been the employment of the Author, at his leisure hours, for a considerable time past; and the principal want he experienced, lay in the paucity of writers who have preceded him in this course of study. That consideration, on the other hand, prompted him to make the present effort, hoping it might be the means of drawing attention to the Sacred Writings, as the only record of the Divine will, and as being still comparatively neglected, even in this age of general religious profession.
