Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Second Edition of the CRC Handbook of Mariculture provides an extensive comparison of marine shrimp culture techniques from around the world. This extensively revised and updated Second Edition focuses on growout systems that have contributed to the production success of shrimp farms and systems worldwide. Topics covered include methods for the culture and preparation of algae, rotifers, Artemia, and other foodstuffs for use in crustacean farms; recent developments on enriching larval food organisms to improve crustacean diets; conditioning and spawning penaeid shrimp; obtaining and manipulating shrimp eggs and sperm for controlled reproduction and use of intensive nursery raceways for juvenile shrimp production; and discussions of many types of marine shrimp growout systems. In addition, culture systems used in Hawaii, Ecuador, Taiwan, and Japan are described in detail. Significant new information from Japan on hormonal control of penaeid shrimp maturation and spawning is discussed. Marine shrimp and Macrobrachium shrimp diseases by the foremost authorities in the area are presented with detailed photographs and illustrations to help identify diseases. The book also includes an update on American lobster larval and juvenile culture.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book uses five decades of map data, air photos, and medium to high-resolution satellite imagery to track the expansions of aquaculture and the loss of both estuarine and mangrove land covers in Ecuador. The results are staggering. In some regions, Ecuador has lost almost 50% of its estuarine space and approximately 80% of its mangrove forest. The current estuarine land cover bears no resemblance to the historic estuarine land cover. The analysis is complete from 1968 to 2014. The analysis covers all the major estuaries of mainland Ecuador. The research expands beyond purely land cover into the land use of the estuaries and the implications of the land cover transitions. The author lived in Ecuador's estuarine environments for almost two years studying this area. During this time he conducted mapping workshops with local residents, conducted 100 interviews with local actors, conducted six group discussions with fisherfolk syndicates, conducted eight presentations, worked on a shrimp farm. He was employed by the Ministry of the Environment on a Prometeo fellowship for one-year researching estuarine health and worked on mangrove replanting projects in the estuaries. In addition to the remote sensing data, the author provides a contextual framework to the analysis. It is not just hard numbers that are presented, but a remote sensing analysis tied to local actors that tell a coherent almost 50 -year estuarine story at the national, provincial, and local scales The book is intended for researchers, academics, graduate students, NGOs, and government actors including those who work in development, environment, and policy implementation. It is suitable supplemental reading for students in courses related to the coastal zone, land use change, and remote sensing. The electronically supplementary material includes all the related data to underpin the analysis as well as all the resulting GIS files.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The continued expansion of aquaculture – in a wide range of environments and of a growing number of species has lead to increasing demands on aquatic resources. These demands vary with the culture species, the culture method and the environmental and ecological setting. While there are many examples of efforts to mitigate detrimental environmental effects, the environment remains the ultimate constraint on the future sustainable development of this maturing industry. The relationships between the activities of aquaculture and the environment are therefore of economic importance as well as of scientific interest and, for these reasons, a large international research community has developed over the past decade. In this volume, the resultant research is synthesised and critically reviewed, providing a source of reference to the most important recent developments at research and professional level. The authors are internationally recognised authorities who have made significant contributions to their respective research areas. The first part of the volume is organised in terms of the major culture types. This is followed by chapters of general relevance to aquaculture. The volume is designed to complement Biology of Farmed Fish (eds K D Black/A D Pickering), also published in this series. It is directed at fish biologists, shellfish biologists and environmental scientists working in the academic, governmental and industrial sectors.

Book excerpt: Coastal and marine ecosystems, some severely degraded, other still pristine, control rich resources of inshore environments and coastal seas of Latin America's Pacific and Atlantic margins. Conflicts between the needs of the region's nations and diminishing revenues and environmental quality have induced awareness of coastal ecological problems and motivated financial support for restoration and management. The volume provides a competent review on the structure, processes and function of 22 important Latin American coastal marine ecosystems. Each contribution describes the environmental settings, biotic components and structure of the system, considers trophic processes and energy flow, evaluates the modifying influence of natural and human perturbations, and suggests management needs. Although the focus of the book is on basic ecological research, the results have application for coastal managers.

Technological advances have enabled shrimp farming to change from traditional, small-scale businesses into a global industry. This has contributed to problems with serious disease outbreaks, which have already caused several regional wipe-outs of farm shrimp populations. The shrimp farming industry continues to grow and there is a need for a source of reliable and detailed information on shrimp farming, best practice and new developments, aimed at the shrimp industry, to facilitate future sustainable growth of the industry. The Shrimp Book, published in 2010, was written from the academic perspective, The Shrimp Book II’s focus is towards the industry perspective. 5m Books

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The highly specialized nature of marine mammals when compared with their terrestrial counterparts, the environment in which they live, and the impact of humans on them throughout history and at the present, have made of the scholarship on these creatures something unique in itself. Therefore, it is not surprising that many researchers have also taken a distinctive approach to their study. This volume is aimed at providing a glimpse at such diversity of views and approaches while delivering valuable information on marine mammalogy. Given the increasing concerns regarding issues of anthropogenic factors affecting these animals, it is not surprising that the majority of chapters in this book deal with this subject.

Book excerpt: This book focuses on the challenges people face in managing agricultural crops, aquaculture, fisheries and related ecosystems in inland areas of coastal zones in the tropics of Asia, Africa, Australia and South America. These challenges can create conflicts in the use of natural resources between different stakeholders. Through many case studies, the book discusses the nature of the conflicts and identifies what is known and not known about how to manage them. For example, some case studies relate to the trade-offs between enhancing agricultural production by constructing embankments to keep out saline water and maintaining not only the variety of rural livelihoods but also brackish aquatic biodiversity. Other case studies provide the lessons learnt from the conversion of mangrove forests to shrimp farms.
