Book excerpt: The source and fate of sediments delivered to the Upper Mississippi River System (UMRS) have long been issues of concern. Impoundment by a series of locks and dams, and the associated rise in water level, initially created a highly diverse structural environment of secondary and tertiary channels, considerable bathymetric relief, and numerous islands. Eventually, the impoundment resulted in the simplification of that structural diversity. In the 60 years since impoundment, channels have filled in, bathymetric relief has been reduced and islands have been lost to erosion. The Environmental Management Technical Center, in cooperation with the Water Resources Division of the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS, Illinois and Iowa Districts) and the states of Illinois and Iowa, selected Pool 13 on the Mississippi River and the La Grange Pool on the Illinois River as the initial sites to develop pool-scale suspended sediment budgets. Developing a sediment budget is a necessary first step in understanding the future geomorphology of a navigation pool.

Book excerpt: This report presents the results of aquatic vegetation stratified random sampling surveys conducted in 1998. Aquatic vegetation was investigated in five navigation pools in the Upper Mississippi River System using a new protocol named "stratified random sampling" or SRS protocol for the first time in 1998. The five pools were Pools 4, 8, 13, and 26 of the Upper Mississippi River and La Grange Pool of the Illinois River. The results on submersed aquatic vegetation and rooted floating-leaf aquatic vegetation were summarized in this report. The percent frequencies of submersed aquatic vegetation in shallow water areas (less than or equal to 3 m deep at flat-pool condition) in the five pools were 36.6%, 47.6%, 42%, 6.1%, and 0%, respectively. The aquatic area strata that were directly influenced by the flow in the main channel, such as the main channel borders and secondary channels, had lower percent frequencies of submersed aquatic vegetation than the aquatic area strata that were less directly influenced by the flow in the main channel, such as the contiguous and isolated backwaters. The percent covers of rooted floating-leaf vegetation were 4.1%, 7.5%, 6.5%, 0.9%, and 0%. The majority of aquatic vegetation that was recorded in Pool 26 was from one isolated backwater area. Aquatic vegetation was not recorded at any of the sampling sites in La Grange Pool.

Book Synopsis Pool 13 Drawdown by : James T. Rogala
Download or read book Pool 13 Drawdown written by James T. Rogala and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The likelihood of 1 - or 2-foot drawdowns, and the area affected by such alternative drawdowns, was estimated for Pool 13 on the Upper Mississippi River. Minimum water surface (elevation) requirements were compared to computed water surface profiles to determine a critical low flow that would allow a navigation channel 400 feet wide and 10.5 feet deep. An upper limit on flow was established based on the flow at which open river conditions would exist for a given drawdown. The range in flows that would allow for a drawdown was used to estimate success rates using historical daily discharge data. Success rates were determined for a variety of drawdown durations between two time periods, May 1-August 15 and June 15-August 15. The greatest effect of the drawdown would be near Lock and Dam 13. Higher discharges, as well as distance from the dam, lessen the drawdown amount. Areas that would be affected by these two drawdown scenarios were predicted by overlaying maps of water surfaces with depths using a geographic information system. Although the drawdown effects on most physical and biotic components of Pool 13 are unknown, some general drawdown effects likely to occur because of the changes in water surface elevation are presented.
