Book excerpt: This study was motivated by the need to control noise in naval vessels in order to reduce their detectability and hence vulnerability to enemy attack. This report provides a detailed review of controller technologies & algorithms that could be used for active noise, vibration, & structural acoustic control in ship structures. The review focusses on a wide range of controller technologies, methodologies and algorithms such as feed-forward control; feedback control; adaptive control; control of tonal noise; control of broadband noise; decentralized control; neural network control; active engine mounts; active noise cancellation; active vibration control; and active structural acoustic control. The steps involved in the design of an active control system are exhaustively reviewed & documented with a focus on the diesel engine noise problem. Consideration is given to the control of low frequency noise from the engine. All the noise & vibration transmission paths associated with the engine problems (engine mount, exhaust stacks & piping systems, drive shaft, mechanical couplings, airborne radiated noise) are taken into account in the review.

Book excerpt: This study arose from the need to control noise in naval vessels to reduce their detectability and hence their vulnerability to enemy attack. This report provides a detailed review of sensor & actuator technologies that could be used for active noise and vibration control in ship structures. The review focusses on a wide range of sensor and actuator materials, such as piezoelectric and electrostrictive materials; magnetostrictive materials; shape memory alloys; optical fibres; electrorheological & magnetorheological fluids; microphones; loudspeakers; and electrodynamic, hydraulic, & pneumatic actuators. The diesel engine noise problem was the focus of the study, and consideration was given to the noise transmission paths: the engine mounting system; the exhaust stacks & piping systems; the drive shafts & mechanical couplings; and the air borne radiated noise. Sensor and actuator technologies that are suitable for active control of noise through these paths or similar structural systems are reviewed. Based on factors, such as cost, frequency of the disturbance, the operating (marine) environment, experience in other applications, ease of implementation, and the expected performance, detailed recommendations on sensors & actuators for the paths are provided. A program is suggested to implement the sensor & actuator technology recommendations.

Book Synopsis Comprehensive Investigation on Active-Passive Hybrid Isolation and Tunable Dynamic Vibration Absorption by : Fei Wang
Download or read book Comprehensive Investigation on Active-Passive Hybrid Isolation and Tunable Dynamic Vibration Absorption written by Fei Wang and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-12-17 with total page 175 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book discusses efforts to control the low-frequency vibration transmission of typical power equipment and pipeline systems of ships, exploring the use of active and passive hybrid vibration isolation and adjustable dynamic vibration absorption technologies. It also proposes an adaptive feed-forward control strategy and studies a distributed feed-forward control hardware system. In addition, the book presents a three-way dynamic vibration absorption theory used to design a pipeline-system adjustable dynamic vibration absorber, which offers a number of advantages, such as compact structure, easy assembly and disassembly, low power consumption, excellent vibration control effect and wide frequency band adjustable ability, etc. This book is a valuable resource for researchers and engineers in the fields of noise and vibration control, active control systems, active vibration isolation and adaptive dynamic vibration absorption.
Book Synopsis Active Control of Noise and Vibration by : Colin H. Hansen

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the publication of the first edition, considerable progress has been made in the development and application of active noise control (ANC) systems, particularly in the propeller aircraft and automotive industries. Treating the active control of both sound and vibration in a unified way, this second edition of Active Control of Noise and Vibration continues to combine coverage of fundamental principles with the most recent theoretical and practical developments. What's New in This Edition Revised, expanded, and updated information in every chapter Advances in feedforward control algorithms, DSP hardware, and applications Practical application examples of active control of noise propagating in ducts The use of a sound intensity cost function, model reference control, sensing radiation modes, modal filtering, and a comparison of the effectiveness of various sensing strategies New material on feedback control of sound transmission into enclosed spaces New material on model uncertainty, experimental determination of the system model, optimization of the truncated model, collocated actuators and sensors, biologically inspired control, and a discussion of centralised versus de-centralised control A completely revised chapter on control system implementation New material on parametric array loudspeakers, turbulence filtering, and virtual sensing More material on smart structures, electrorheological fluids, and magnetorheological fluids Integrating the related disciplines of active noise control and active vibration control, this comprehensive two-volume set explains how to design and implement successful active control systems in practice. It also details the pitfalls one must avoid to ensure a reliable and stable system.
