Unintended results of enactments such as No Child Left Behind (NCLB), have placed a focus on struggling students. The purpose of this study was to explore teacher and parent perceptions of an academically gifted program at two schools in a growing district at the eastern end of the greater Triangle region in North Carolina. The research focused on four questions: (a) How do parents of students identified as academically gifted perceive the way differentiated curriculum is currently being delivered; (b) How do teachers of students identified as academically gifted perceive the way differentiated curriculum is currently being delivered; (c) What outcomes would parents like to see as a result of their students participating in an elementary academically gifted program; and (d) What would teachers like to see provided in order to meet the academic needs of students identified as gifted? This study was qualitative in nature and data collection included survey and interview sessions. The results of the study indicated that enhancing the parent information practices for gifted students, implementing an early intervention program for higher performing students, designing effective professional development, and personalized learning would be beneficial for the gifted program. Without ensuring that gifted students receive a challenging curriculum the, concept of gifted underachievement will become a normalcy.

Book excerpt: This qualitative study examined the perceptions of parents and teachers regarding the effectiveness of gifted programs in addressing the academic and social-emotional needs of gifted students. Utilizing online surveys, perceptual data was collected from parents and teachers of gifted students in a suburban school district in southeast Pennsylvania. Interviews were conducted with parents and teachers to obtain personal views and perspectives concerning the effectiveness of gifted programs and services. The study concluded that parents favor advanced placement courses, grade-level acceleration, and small group pull-out services. Parents expressed confidence in programs intended to support their children's social-emotional development, but noted that academic programs appeared to be valued over social-emotional services. Parents recommended increasing the priority of social-emotional aspects of the gifted program. They suggested a disproportionate number of programs exist to aid students with learning disabilities versus those intended for gifted students. Parents recommended improving equity within student support service options. Parents also expressed satisfaction with pull-out style enrichment and acceleration, but proposed longer and more frequent interactions between gifted students and gifted support staff. Teachers expressed positive perceptions of the effectiveness of gifted academic programs. They reported high levels of instructional self-efficacy, but a perceived lack of school policy guiding enrichment and acceleration strategies. Teachers further indicated positive perceptions of current social-emotional programing, but a limited number of training opportunities designed to support them with gifted education. Participants recommended more gifted training opportunities and an increase in staffing to improve the overall effectiveness of gifted programs.

Book excerpt: There is little current research in reading instruction for gifted learners. Children who are identified as gifted in reading are often left to their own devices or provided inadequate reading/literacy instruction (Ries et al., 2004). The purpose of this project was to determine how parents of gifted children and gifted students perceived the children's learning-to-read process, their early school reading experiences, their current school reading experiences, and changes parents and children would like to made to current reading instruction methods. Participants were recruited from various programs including summer enrichment programs for gifted youth ages 8 to 14 years old. Two hundred twenty-two parent-child dyads responded to a mixed-methods internet survey. Results from the quantitative data showed that the children in this study were exhibiting pre-reading and reading skills much younger than previously reported in the literature. In this study, the mean age at which children were able to associate letter sound with letter shape was 23.8 months of age. This skill is not typically achieved until children are between 36 and 48 months of age. Additionally, although 63% of participants responded their child was reading picture books independently between 24 and 60 months of age, 21.9 % of participants responded their child was reading picture books independently before the child was 24 months old and 7.8% of participants responded their child was reading picture books independently before the child's first birthday, a skill typical of late kindergarten or early first grade, between the ages of 66 and 72 months. Qualitative results revealed that many parent participants did not feel their children were getting challenged enough in reading at school. Some parents chose to remove their children from the formal school setting and home school as a result. Parents also advocated for their children, trying to ensure appropriate reading instruction, but not always successfully. Student participants indicated they prefer to be in classes with like-ability peers, choose their own books and projects, and have more time in school for reading books they select. Implications for future research indicate a need to examine university teacher preparation courses in reading methods, how to change current reading curriculum delivery to gifted learners, and improvement in parent/teacher relationships to create more collaborative partnerships in educating gifted learners.

Book excerpt: In this qualitative study, I consider the effect of gifted identification on preadolescents by studying participants' experiences subsequent to the labeling process. Parent and child perceptions of these experiences are discussed. Six students identified as gifted, and recently enrolled in full time gifted programs, and their parents, took part in this case study focusing on the children's emotional, social, and academic functioning. Questionnaires were distributed to participants, and individual interviews were conducted. Although the children's experiences varied greatly, the analysis suggests there are some pockets of concern. The conceptual groupings pertaining to gifted labeling and placement that are identified and studied are (a) emotional impact (including positive and negative aspects, and the sense of self), (b) social impact, (c) academic impact, and (d) individual differences and developmental diversity. The implications of the children's experiences suggest a need for counseling and educational support systems, and a number of considerations are discussed. As a result, several practical measures for facilitating the optimal development of gifted learners are presented, including a conceptual framework for a university-based resource centre for gifted development and education.
