Questionnaires were distributed to faculty at five randomly selected high schools in a Midwest city participating in the study. Data from the survey was then examined to determine which factors correlate with teacher computer use in the classroom. The results of this study will help improve understanding of teachers' instructional computer use.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this quantitative study was to examine the ways elementary teachers use computer technology for instructional purposes and the factors that influence their use of computers. The population consisted of recent graduates from the elementary teacher preparation program at a mid-Atlantic university. Data were gathered using a survey instrument. The instrument addressed the four factors that support teachers' use of computers: access and availability, preparation and training, leadership, and time. Descriptive and inferential statistics were employed in this study. The response rate was 89 percent. The findings indicated that 84 percent of the teachers felt either well or very well prepared to integrate technology into curriculum, and that they were able to overcome the typical barriers to computer use in elementary classrooms. The teachers overwhelmingly indicated that computers have considerable potential for allowing students to discover or construct ideas for themselves and supported constructivist pedagogies when referring to computer use in elementary classrooms. Teacher preparation, teacher philosophy and grade level were identified as influential factors in the use of computers by the elementary teachers and the elementary students. Survey instrument is appended. (Contains 5 tables.).

Book excerpt: Abstract: This study determined the level of computer use for instructional purposes by technology education teachers in Ohio public schools. The study also investigated the relationships between the level of use and selected factors: expertise; access; attitude; support; and teacher characteristics. This study derived its theoretical framework from Rogers2 (1995) model of diffusion of innovations. A survey-correlation research design was used. A questionnaire was developed and mailed to all technology education teachers (N = 1170) in Ohio public schools in the 2002-2003 school year. Validity and reliability were established for the survey instrument. The return rate of the survey was 66%. Descriptive and inferential statistical techniques were used. The findings of this study indicated that technology education teachers have high levels of computer use in mainstream computer uses such as word processing, e-mail, Internet, and classroom management. Strong positive correlation existed between the level of computer use and teachers2 perceived expertise and teachers2 perceived attitude toward computers as tools. In addition, moderate positive correlation existed between the level of use and teachers' perceived access to computers. Multiple regression analysis indicated a positive predictive value toward computer use with the demographic characteristics of instructional experience and modular instructional method, and a negative predictive value with age and urban geographic location. The independent variables that explain the greatest amount of variation in the level of computer use were in order of predictive value: teachers2 perceived expertise, attitude, and access. Technology education teachers have high levels of computer use in mainstream applications and low levels of computer use in specialized applications. These levels of use are slightly lower than the state levels. Those teachers that possess expertise are the ones who use the computer for instructional purposes. Positive attitudes toward computers as tools provide a starting point for adoption of computer use. To increase computer use, technology education teachers need to be given more training. In-service training needs to be a top priority. Pre-service programs should include more courses in using computers as tools for teaching and learning.

Over the years, acceptance researchers have become more interested in understanding the factors influencing the adoption of technologies in various settings. From the literature, much research has been done to understand technology acceptance in the business contexts. This is understandable, given the close relationship between the appropriate uses of technology and profit margin. In most of the acceptance studies, researchers have sought to identify and understand the forces that shape users’ acceptance so as to influence the design and implementation process in ways to avoid or minimize resistance or rejection when users interact with technology. These circumstances have provided the impetus for researchers to study technology acceptance in educational settings. Book excerpt: This research sought to identify the availability of digital technologies in public primary schools in Hail, Saudi Arabia and their use in teaching science subjects from the viewpoints of science teachers in the city. Another primary focus of this research was to address the applicability of TAM. A total of 330 Science teachers (145 males and 185 females) were drawn from a stratified sample randomly. Two instruments were developed to collect data; the first instrument was a self-developed checklist to profile the data related to the availability of digital technologies and facilities and the second instrument was a questionnaire adopted from three previous studies. The findings indicated an acute lack in the availability of digital technology facilities in all the primary schools surveyed, both boys' schools and girls'. Teachers' use of digital technologies in teaching and learning is influenced by several factors, namely schools' management support (MS), computer anxiety (CA) and enjoyment (E). The availability of digital technological facilities varied throughout the primary schools in Hail. Throughout the 12 digital technology facilities investigated in the study, only 4 were accessible in all the schools. This research would assert that management support (MS) and enjoyment (E) on Science teachers are positively correlated with perceived usefulness (PU) relative to digital technology usage. Moreover, it would further assert that (CA) on Science educators is negatively correlated to PE with regards to digital technology usage. The study found that the intention to use (IU) influenced Science teachers' actual use (AU) of digital technologies in primary schools. It was also found that perceived ease of use (PE) and enjoyment (E) influence Science teachers' intentions in making use of digital technologies in primary schools. But perceived usefulness (PU) seems to not influence Science teachers' intentions to apply digital technologies in primary schools. Science teachers are more likely to be concerned with the ease of use in digital technology and enjoyment in making decisions to use the technology for teaching, as opposed to how digital technology would facilitate better education and learning through their use. The research proposed an extension to the TAM model that accounts for the utilization of the unified model within the MS, CA, E, PE, PU, IU and AU contexts. The results showed that the TAM structure directly impacts the MS, CA, E, PE, PU, IU and AU contexts. These results demonstrate the success of the proposed extension in achieving the objectives of this study. This study will contribute to decision-making to disseminate digital technologies adoption among Science teachers in the primary schools and is beneficial to specialists in teacher training, and those in charge of their training in digital technologies.
