Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to investigate the influence of race, age, and education, upon oral health-related quality of life when dental health status is controlled. A convenience sample of 141 independent living African-American and Caucasian adults participated. Subjects were selected from suburban-urban, hospital-based dental clinics, in a Midwestern city. Two outcome measures were utilized, the Oral Health-Related Quality of Life Survey and the T-health Index. The OHRQL Survey was used to characterize the perceived oral health-related quality of life domains; symptom status, functional status, and general and oral health perceptions. It is a self-administered questionnaire with 34 closed-ended questions, and uses a five point Likert-type response scale. The second instrument, the T-health Index, was used to categorize the population's dental health status. The T-health Index utilizes an average weighted index that scores the teeth based on their disease status. The principal investigator measured T-health using existing full mouth radiographs. Intra-rater reliability on the T-health Index for the investigation was established (r=1.0). Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics to capture demographics of the sample population. Of the 141 participants, 65 were African-America and 76 were Caucasian with the mean age of 40.7 and 43.9 years, respectively. Of the total participants, 51 were male and 90 were female. A series of stepwise regression models were run to examine the relationship of age, education, and race, on Oral Health Related-Quality of Life sub-scale scores and total score while controlling for dental health status. Sophisticated weighting procedure was employed to adjust for variations in probabilities of selection and response rates. Therefore, this report presents estimates as representative of child oral health in Australia. Information was collected via a parental questionnaire and a detailed dental examination by trained dental professionals.
