Most notably, the requirement of previous teaching experience has been removed. Since the position of counselor developed out of teaching, many studies have examined teaching experience or lack of it as variables. Yet none has examined school counselors' perceptions of the importance of professional development areas related to the MoStep School Counseling Competencies. This research study surveyed school counselors to determine if there was a relationship between teaching experience or lack of it and counselors' perceived importance of 18 professional development areas derived from the MoStep School Counseling Competencies. The study also examined demographic variables, self-efficacy and stress, and their possible relationships to counselors' perceptions of the importance of professional development for those with teaching experience and those who lack teaching experience. Findings suggest that teaching experience has no relationship to counselors' perceptions of the importance of professional development areas. An unanticipated finding was that counselors' perceptions of the importance of professional development areas was related to counselors' years of experience as a counselor. Since the early years of counselor experience are important to success in the profession, issues such as early-career mentoring and administrative understanding of the role of the school counselor may prove useful.

Book excerpt: It was concluded that the advocacy disposition, knowledge, and skill competencies delineated by Trusty and Brown (2005) are appropriate for inclusion in master's degree programs in school counseling, and that additional focus on advocacy competencies might be needed within programs to ensure that all school counseling graduates learn and are able to apply the competencies. It was also concluded that the perceptions of counselor educators in CACREP-accredited and non-CACREP-accredited programs are more similar than different relative to the importance of including the competencies in graduate programs, the extent to which they are taught, and the readiness of graduates to apply the competencies.

Book excerpt: Despite the development of the American School Counseling Association's National Standards for school counseling programs, the school counseling profession continues to struggle with role ambiguity and role conflict. In an effort to gain additional information regarding the school counselors' role, this study employed a research survey design to examine the principals' and counselors' perceptions of the school counselors' role and to investigate the similarities and differences between those perceptions. A purposeful sample of 141 public school principals and 149 counselors from elementary and secondary schools located within Region 4 in southeast Texas were solicited to complete a modified version of the School Counselor Activity Rating Scale (SCARS) (Scarborough, 2005). The researcher analyzed the data obtained from the SCARS by calculating frequency distributions and percentages for each statement of the SCARS to determine which activities were perceived by principals and counselors as most and least important. The findings of this study indicate the majority of principals and counselors have similar perceptions on 35 of the activities and differing perceptions on 15 of the activities measured on the SCARS.

Book excerpt: Historically, there has been role ambiguity among school counselors in spite of decades of attempts to establish comprehensive guidelines delineating their roles and functions. Although they have the ability to greatly influence future school counselors, there is a dearth of information regarding counselor educator perceptions of the roles and functions of school counselors. This study consists of a national survey of counselor educators (n=103) that was conducted to determine their perceptions of the roles and functions of school counselors. Results indicated that some ambiguity exits among counselor educators with regards to these roles and functions. Recommendations for counselor educators and implications for further research are discussed.

Book excerpt: "This dissertation attempted to ascertain how school counselors, working in a county located in the northeastern United States, perceived their own preparation and training regarding the management of mental health issues. It also attempted to gain an understanding of how school counselors managed mental health issues involving students grades K-12. This research was relevant and necessary, as recent research has shown there has been a significant increase in the numbers of children and adolescents suffering from mental health issues. This study was completed via an internet survey of 60 school counselors, eliciting information in order to understand the evolution of school counseling programs and focused on the current status of the school counselor in regard to student mental health. I discovered significance in three realms. First, I anticipated that my findings could be helpful to inform curriculum in school counselor education. Second, findings captured various conceptualizations of school counselor professional development. Third, outcomes could aid school counselors, and the profession more generally, to reconceptualize their role in the management of mental health and other psychosocial issues"--Leaf ii.

Book excerpt: The study evaluates using survey work the attitudes and perceptions of Oklahoma's high school counselors toward the community college. Using perception theory as a framework, the study used a modified version of the National Junior College Attitude Survey. The survey used a database maintained by the Office of the Oklahoma State Regents for Higher Education and was conducted in the Fall 2017 timeframe. The findings indicated that Oklahoma's high school counselors generally found that the community college instruction were viewed as comparable to four-year institutions, that the community college prepared its students to be well-rounded citizens, and that coursework easily transferred to the four-year institution. The study has utility for the community college leader and the enrollment manager by providing insight into the perceptions and attitudes of the high school counselor, a major influencer upon the college choice process. The study also presents what high school counselors used predominantly in the shaping of attitude and perception.

Book excerpt: The role and function of school counselors remains a consistent source of concern in the school counseling profession. Aligning school counseling activities with comprehensive school counseling practice is a way to standardize the profession. Creating a school board policy for counseling is a strategy to gain support for and institutionalize school counseling practices. The purpose of this dissertation study was to produce two manuscripts related to the role and function of school counselors and school board policies for counseling. The researcher investigated school board members' (N = 169) and school counselors' (N = 341) perceptions of school board knowledge of comprehensive school counseling program activities, school board prioritization of those activities, and school board adoption of policies and actions related to school counseling. The school board perception survey and school counselor perception survey were modified versions of the School Counselor Activity Rating Scale. This research suggested that school counselors were more likely to rate school board members' knowledge of and level of priority for school counseling activities lower than school board members rated themselves. This research also suggested that there was a direct relationship between school board members' knowledge of and level of priority they assign to school counseling activities.

Book excerpt: The ASCA National Model represents a developmental, comprehensive counseling program that focuses on program foundation, delivery, management, and accountability (Campbell & Dahir, 1997). The ASCA National Model is believed to be dependent on collaborative relationships with other stakeholders. Teachers represent a powerful group of stakeholders, as they can influence the effectiveness of the school counseling program. In a national survey, high school teachers (n=401) were asked about their perceptions of school counselors. The focus of this research study was to ascertain: (a) the value teachers place on the appropriate role responsibilities and inappropriate role activities as described in the ASCA Executive Summary; (b) their perception of school counselor engagement in the appropriate responsibilities and inappropriate activities as described in the ASCA Executive Summary; (c) teacher willingness to collaborate with school counselors; and (d) their perception of school counselor willingness to collaborate with other stakeholders including teachers. This research revealed that there is still a need: (a) to increase teacher awareness on the role of the school counselor; (b) for school counselors to demonstrate their effectiveness; and (c) for school counselors to pursue collaborative relationships with teachers.

Book excerpt: This qualitative study analyzed the perceptions of public school principals and assistant principals regarding the appropriateness of school counselor duty assignments. Perceptions of the participants were compared to the recommendations published in 2005 by the American School Counselor Association (ASCA) in its National Model. Further comparisons were made between the perceptions of elementary and secondary administrators. Participants (N=91) represented 15 of the 16 school districts in one south central county in Pennsylvania. A survey was used to collect data as well as subsequent interviews with 12 randomly-selected participants. Results indicated that although most participants rated themselves as only slightly familiar with the ASCA National Model, their perceptions regarding which counselor duties were important and which were not important matched the recommendations in the model. The duty ranked most differently by elementary and secondary principals was the delivery of classroom guidance lessons, which the elementary principals felt was much more important than the secondary principals. Although some non-counseling duty assignments were discovered during the data collection process, results indicated a very favorable outlook for school counselors who wish to comply with the ASCA National Model and implement an effective comprehensive guidance program for their school.

Book excerpt: Implementation of the American School Counseling Association National Model: Readiness Level of Mississippi School Districts Based on School Counselor Perceptions Abstract The researcher examined school counselors? perceptions of the readiness level of school districts in Mississippi to implement the American School Counseling Association (ASCA) National Model. The researcher also addressed certain school and counselor characteristics that could be predictors of this level of readiness. The predictor variables included grade level of counselor?s school (elementary, middle, high school/vocational), number of years of counseling experience, years of experience as a classroom teacher, student-to-counselor ratio, age, race, and level of education (M.S., Ed. S., Ph. D.). The dependent variable was the school counselor?s perceived level of readiness of the school district based on their overall scores on the ASCA National Model District Readiness Survey. The researcher also examined the perceived readiness level of school districts in the State of Mississippi in each of the 7 ASCA National Model readiness indicators (i. e., community support, leadership, guidance curriculum, school counselors? beliefs and attitudes, school counselors? skills, district resources, and staffing/time use). Based on mean scores for the seven readiness indicators on the ASCA National Model District Readiness Survey, school counselors perceived two indicators as being ready to implement the ASCA National Model: School Counselors? Beliefs and Attitudes and School Counselors? Skills. School counselors perceived three indicators as being minimally ready: Community Support, Leadership, and Guidance Curriculum. School counselors perceived two indicators as being not ready to implement the ASCA National Model: District Resources and Staffing/Time Use. Based on school counselor perceptions, the?overall? readiness level of Mississippi school districts to implement the ASCA National Model is a minimal lev.

Book excerpt: The roles and responsibilities of school counselors across the United States are often misinterpreted amongst various stakeholders, individual state requirements for educational initiatives, and often among practicing counselors' own perceptions and view of professional identity. While the American School Counselor Association (ASCA, 2003; 2005) strives to provide ethical standards and practices to solidify the professional identity of school counselors and acquire the qualifications and skills to address all students' academic, personal/social and career development needs, a clear defined definition and perception of the school counselor continues to become solidified. Perhaps this is due to the changing educational horizon, communities, administration, and federal influences of policies and procedures on schools and school districts (Bain, 2012). Whatever the reason, school counselors are faced with a myriad of challenges that make it difficult in today's educational society to adhere to the social/emotional, post-secondary/career, and academic needs of all students. The American School Counselor Association (ASCA, 2003;2005) has developed the ASCA National Model: A Framework for School Counseling Programs which establishes a structure for effective school counseling programs; however, school counseling programs, credentials, and educational initiatives can be different from state to state. This study examined high school counselors (9th-12th grade) in Pennsylvania, suburban, public high Schools, specifically in Bucks and Montgomery Counties. A quasi-mixed methods, exploratory research approach was used. Nonparametric statistics were run to determine if a significant impact of demographic variables yielded a difference in school counselors' self-efficacy. Additionally, school counselors were randomly selected to participate in semi-structured, open-ended interviews, examining high school counselors' perceptions and self-efficacy regarding their roles and responsibilities pertaining to students' mental health issues. Results indicated that gender, one's undergraduate degree of education, and years of experience have significant impact on school counselors' self-efficacy, specifically related to certain items on the Counselor Activity Self-Efficacy Scales (Lent, et al., 2003). After content analysis coding, it was also found that school counselors feel high efficacy beliefs associated with specific roles and responsibilities and that self-efficacy beliefs change if counselors perceive a lack of stakeholder support or do not feel they are valued. Some implications for future research might be a longitudinal study of school counselors' self-efficacy over a given period of time and a larger sample size. It might also be helpful to combine elements of the CASES Scales with other school counselor based scales to form a more unified measurement that speaks to school counselors' roles and responsibilities that have been identified within this study and expand to specific mental health diagnosis, disorders, and behaviors. KEY WORDS: School Counseling, Communication, Educational Psychology.
