Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lying on the border between eastern and western Christendom, Orthodox Karelia preserved its unique religious culture into the 19th and 20th centuries, when it was described and recorded by Finnish and Karelian folklore collectors. This colorful array of ritulas and beliefs involving nature spirits, saints, the dead, and pilgrimage to monasteries represented a unigue fusion of official Church ritual and doctrine and pre-Christian ethnic folk belief. This book undertakes a fascinating exploration into many aspects of Orthodox Karelian ritual life: beliefs in supernatural forces, folk models of illness, body concepts, divination, holy icons, the role of the ritual specialist and healer, the divide between nature and culture, images of forest, the cult of the dead, and the popular image of monasteries and holy hermits. It will appeal to anyone interested in popular religion, the cognitive study of religion, ritual studies, medical anthropology, and the folk traditions and symbolism of the Balto-Finnic peoples.

Download or read book A Pocketbook of God's Promises in a Pandemic written by Priscilla Calcote and published by WestBow Press. This book was released on 2020-11-25 with total page 39 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 2020 Symbolizes- Visual Clarity by God At the start of 2020, everyone saw the new year as the start of new beginnings. According to “Parade” magazine, on December 9, 2019, the top ten New Year’s resolutions were to lose weight, increase finances, exercise, start a new job, manage stress, stop smoking, improve relationships, stop procrastinating and set aside time for themselves. Although people had their own ideas of New Year’s resolutions, God’s plan was to lead people of the world to him by opening their eyes to a harsh reality while bringing light to deeds done in darkness. He wants his people to remember and acknowledge that God is in control. In Acts 26:18 Jesus said, “ I am sending you to open their eyes, so they may turn from darkness to light and from the power of satan to God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins and a place among those who are sanctified by faith to me.” Stop saying, “This is the worst year ever” or “I can’t wait until 2020 is over.” Regardless of the troubles we have faced in 2020, everyday is a gift from God. Let us all focus on Christ. God’s promises will sustain you in this pandemic and provide you with PEACE, PROTECTION, PROVISION, and PATIENCE.

Book Synopsis Improving Research-Based Knowledge of College Promise Programs by : Laura W. Perna
Download or read book Improving Research-Based Knowledge of College Promise Programs written by Laura W. Perna and published by American Educational Research Association. This book was released on 2020-03-20 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Also known as free tuition and free college programs, college promise programs are an emerging approach for increasing higher education attainment of people in particular places. To maximize the effectiveness of their efforts and investments, program leaders and policymakers need research-based evidence to inform program design, implementation, and evaluation. With the goal of addressing this knowledge need, this volume presents a collection of research studies that examine several categories and variations of college promise programs. These theoretically grounded empirical investigations use varied data sources and analytic techniques to examine the effects of college promise programs that have different design features and operate in different places. Individually and collectively, the results of these studies have implications for the design and implementation of promise programs if these programs are to create meaningful improvements in attainment for people from underserved groups. The authors efforts also provide a useful foundation for the next generation of college promise research.

Book Synopsis The Promise of Preschool by : Elizabeth Rose
Download or read book The Promise of Preschool written by Elizabeth Rose and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2010-03-17 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The past 45 years have seen the emergence of education for young children as a national issue, spurred by the initiation of the Head Start program in the 1960s, efforts to create a child care system in the 1970s, and the campaign to reform K-12 schooling in the 1980s. Today, the push to make preschool the beginning of public education for all children has gained support in many parts of the country and promises to put early education policy on the national agenda. Yet questions still remain about the best ways to shape policy that will fulfill the promise of preschool. In The Promise of Preschool, Elizabeth Rose traces the history of decisions on early education made by presidents from Lyndon Johnson to George W. Bush, by other lawmakers, and by experts, advocates, activists, and others. Using this historical context as a lens, the book shows how the past shapes today's preschool debate and provides meaningful perspective on the policy questions that need to be addressed as we move forward: Should we provide preschool to all children, or just to the neediest? Should it be run by public schools, or incorporate private child care providers? How do we most effectively ensure educational quality and success? The Promise of Preschool is a balanced, in-depth investigation into these and other important questions and demonstrates how an understanding of the past can stimulate valuable debate about the care and education of young children today.
Book Synopsis Delivering on the Promise of High-Impact Practices by : John Zilvinskis
Download or read book Delivering on the Promise of High-Impact Practices written by John Zilvinskis and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-07-03 with total page 331 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Research shows that enriching learning experiences such as learning communities, service-learning, undergraduate research, internships, and senior culminating experiences – collectively known as High-Impact Practices (HIPs) – are positively associated with student engagement; deep, and integrated learning; and personal and educational gains for all students – particularly for historically underserved students, including first-generation students and racially minoritized populations. While HIPs’ potential benefits for student learning, retention, and graduation are recognized and are being increasingly integrated across higher education programs, much of that potential remains unrealized; and their implementation frequently uneven. Colleges are eager to use the HIP nomenclature for recruitment, promoting equity for traditionally underserved student populations, and preparing lifelong learners and successful professionals. However, HIPs defy easy categorization or standardized implementation. They rely on fidelity, quality, and consistency – being “done well” – to achieve their learning outcomes; and, above all, require attention to access and equity if they are to fulfill their promise of benefitting all student populations equally. The goal of Delivering on the Promise of High-Impact Practices is to provide examples from around the country of the ways educators are advancing equity, promoting fidelity, achieving scale, and strengthening assessment of their own local high-impact practices. Its chapters bring together the best current scholarship, methodologies, and evidence-based practices within the HIPs field, illustrating new approaches to faculty professional development, culture and coalition building, research and assessment, and continuous improvement that help institutions understand and extend practices with a demonstrated high impact. For proponents and practitioners this book offers perspectives, data and critiques to interrogate and improve practice. For administrators it provides an understanding of what’s needed to deliver the necessary support.
