Book excerpt: Synodical Conference Lutherans have labored under the delusion that their Universal Objective Justification is ancient and orthodox. Instead, the doctrine is recent, Pietistic, and the essence of Enthusiasm. Historical and Biblical research show why this is true, how Knapp rather than Walther is the key Synodical Conference theologian.

Book excerpt: Originally intended for the advanced instruction of young people, Chytraeus' A Summary of the Christian Faith is a marvelous book for anyone seeking a deeper understanding of the faith. Chytraeus (1531-1600), one of the authors of the Formula of Concord, ranks as one of the central Lutheran theologians of 16th century. A Summary of the Christian Faith (Originally entitled Catechesis) offers two great blessings to its readers: (1) an opportunity to see how one of the Lutheran fathers confessed and taught the faith, and (2) an opportunity to grow in one's own knowledge and appreciation of Christian doctrine. "Chytraeus had the irenic nature of Melanchthon with the doctrinal commitment of Luther." (From the Introduction.)

Book Synopsis Between Christians and Moriscos by : Benjamin Ehlers
Download or read book Between Christians and Moriscos written by Benjamin Ehlers and published by JHU Press. This book was released on 2006-04-24 with total page 436 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This “excellent study” shows how a Spanish archbishop laid the groundwork for the seventeenth-century expulsion of the Moriscos (James B. Tueller, Renaissance Quarterly). In early modern Spain, the monarchy’s policy of converting all subjects to Christianity only created new forms of tension among ethnic religious groups. Those whose families had always been Christian defined themselves in opposition to forcibly baptized Muslims (moriscos) and Jews (conversos). Here historian Benjamin Ehlers studies the relations between Christians and moriscos in Valencia by analyzing the ideas and policies of archbishop Juan de Ribera. Appointed to the diocese of Valencia in 1568, Juan de Ribera encountered a congregation deeply divided between Christians and moriscos. He came to identify with his Christian flock, leading hagiographers to celebrate him as a Valencian saint. But Ribera had a very different relationship with the moriscos, eventually devising a covert campaign to have them banished. His portrayal of the moriscos as traitors and heretics ultimately justified the Expulsion of 1609–1614, which Ribera considered the triumphant culmination of the Reconquest. Ehler’s sophisticated yet accessible study of the pluralist diocese of Valencia is a valuable contribution to the study of Catholic reform, moriscos, Christian-Muslim relations in early modern Spain, and early modern Europe.

Book Synopsis Living Belief by : Douglas F. Ottati
Download or read book Living Belief written by Douglas F. Ottati and published by Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing. This book was released on 2022-06-07 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A leading theologian’s concise guide to the beliefs, commitments, and practices of Christianity. What do Christians believe? But also, what do they do? And feel? With decades of experience teaching the essentials of Christian faith, Douglas Ottati still finds these questions—and more like them—dynamic and compelling. In Living Belief, he moves beyond trite answers, drawing from the deep well of tradition to offer up wisdom from the Apostles’ Creed, the Ten Commandments, the Sermon on the Mount, and the Lord’s Prayer. In so doing, Ottati explores key Christian themes, such as creation, redemption, and love—of neighbor, enemy, and the weak and dependent. Concise and approachable, Living Belief makes no claims to be a definitive account of Christianity but rather attempts “to introduce a faith that remains a source of meaning and direction, that orients, that encourages and assures, that supplies moral standards and calls for contrition, and that furnishes grounds for perseverance and hope.” In connection with each chapter, Ottati includes questions for discussion, so that readers—those revisiting the core components of their Christian faith and those learning about it for the first time—can together continue the work, begun here, of understanding the multifaceted life of devotion that is Christianity.
Book Synopsis "Born Again": A Portrait and Analysis of the Doctrine of Regeneration within Evangelical Protestantism by : Stephen J. Hamilton
Download or read book "Born Again": A Portrait and Analysis of the Doctrine of Regeneration within Evangelical Protestantism written by Stephen J. Hamilton and published by Vandenhoeck & Ruprecht. This book was released on 2017-04-03 with total page 349 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Stephen J. Hamilton attempts to create a "portrait" of "born-again" Christianity by providing a general introduction to the doctrine of regeneration, including its development in modernity, as well as short exegeses of relevant scriptural texts, followed by a close reading of four theologians – Philipp Jakob Spener, Jonathan Edwards, Friedrich D.E. Schleiermacher, and Charles G. Finney – who all associate the doctrine of regeneration with an experience of presence in the individual believer. In light of these analyses, he then traces a general theological structure of the "born-again" understanding of regeneration, including a catalogue of theological issues over which there is significant disagreement, in order to create a topography of "born-again" theologies. In the final section, he applies these results to contemporary conversion narratives of non-theologians. It is in such conversion narratives, the author argues, that theologians can discover an implicit, "lived" theology that reveals how doctrines are perceived and put into practice among Christians. Accordingly, this is to be understood as the result of the creative reciprocity between (often tacit) theological convictions and the experiences of the Christian life. The final chapter, as a coda to the entire work, offers some concluding reflections on the present cultural and political situation in the USA pertaining to "born-again" Christianity and argues against any oversimplifications of the relationship between "born-again" theologies, culture, and politics.

Book Synopsis Kouduo richao. Li Jiubiao's Diary of Oral Admonitions. A Late Ming Christian Journal by : Erik Zürcher
Download or read book Kouduo richao. Li Jiubiao's Diary of Oral Admonitions. A Late Ming Christian Journal written by Erik Zürcher and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-07-24 with total page 261 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Diary of Oral Admonitions (Kouduo richao) is an invaluable mirror of early Chinese Christianity, as it stands out as the only source that allows a glimpse of Jesuit missionary practice in China on a local level - "accommodation in action" - and of the various responses of the Chinese audience, both converts and interested outsiders. It is a compilation of some five hundred notes "about everything" made by Li Jiubiao and other Christian literati during their conversations with Jesuit missionaries in Fujian between 1630 and 1640. These notes are arranged in chronological order and divided into eight books. The most important Western protagonist in the Diary is the Italian Jesuit Giulio Aleni (1589-1642), called "Master Ai (Rulüe)" in Chinese. The present study and translation of the Diary of Oral Admonitions can be seen as a companion volume to the proceedings of an international conference that was held on Aleni in his native place Brescia in 1994, also published in the Monumenta Serica Monograph Series XLII: "Scholar from the West." Giulio Aleni S.J. (1582-1649) and the Dialogue between China and Christianity, 1997. The present work in two volumes is meant to be a tool for further research. Volume 1 presents a comprehensive introduction to the Diary and its historical context, followed by the annotated translation, both by Erik Zürcher (Leiden), a renown specialist for the study of Christianity in China. It is enhanced by illustrations, partly in colour, and maps. Volume 2 includes a facsimile of the Chinese text (reproducing a copy held in the Roman Archives of the Society of Jesus), a bibliography of Chinese and Western sources as well as secondary literature, and an analytical index with glossary that will enable the reader to trace specific data in the text.
